New Zealand Completed Requests / HARGRAVE - circa 1850
« on: Sunday 28 August 16 12:24 BST (UK)  »
It's a long shot but I am looking for anyone who may be linked with my ancestors in Australia.

The story goes that my G-G-G Grandfather John Francis Henry Hargrave travelled from England to Australia around 1850 with his brother.
His brother then went on to New Zealand while my ancestor remained in Australia.
On John's death certificate it states his fathers name is John- though on his marriage certificate it states his fathers name was James.
His mothers name was Mary/ Matilda Dixon.

I know its a bit vague, but i thought someone may recognise the names from their own records. Thanks,
Kayla

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Lancashire Look-ups Please :)
« on: Wednesday 27 November 13 17:05 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to locate John Hargraves/Hargreaves born 1831. In the 1841 Census (age 9) he was listed living with James 35/Mary 30/Sarah 13/James 5 and Elizabeth 1 in chorley lancashire.

I would like to know if he appears on the next 2 censii, as I'm trying to determine roughly when he jumped ship to Australia. Passenger manifests only state Last names and a title. ???

Would really appreciate the help :)
Cheers, Kayla  ;D

The Common Room / Stumped.

Hi there,

I've been researching the Hargrave/s/Hargreaves line for about a year now and I seem to have hit dead end.

The family I'm looking for is James and Mary Hargreaves (nee Dixon) Unfortunately I have no further info on James and Mary. No DOB and no idea who their parents were.
I did find a marriage registration for James and Mary for the year 1827.
They had four children Harriett (b1829), John (b1831), Giles (b1832) and James (b 1835) all born in the Manchester/Heaton Norris area.
In the 1841 Census James and Mary are listed in the census with their son James, but none of the other children are with them. That to me seemed very strange. Where were the other children?

Also this is the last time we see Mary Hargreaves. On the 1851 Census James is living with a Ann Burns (widower) and her Children.
I had just figured that sometime between 1841 and 1851 Mary had passed away. But I can't find any record of it.
Then I thought perhaps she was convicted, transported and forced to leave her family. However the only record of a Mary Hargreaves within that 10 year time frame was listed as a widower with one child.
Now that I have the death and marriage certificates for her son John (who ended up in Australia) there is a bit of confusion as to whether his mothers name was Mary or Matilda as she as listed as both on several different certificates.

I'm out of ideas on how to continue my research. Would really appreciate a fresh set of eyes and some new ideas.

Cheers Kayla

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1831/1841/1851 HARGRAVE

Hi there,
I have been desperately trying to locate either elusive John Francis Henry Hargrave or his parents James Hargrave and Matilda/Mary Dixon/Dickson for a while now.

I am having so much trouble as John seemed to have no clear indication of his age. He may have been born anywhere between 1830 and 1846.

John left England somewhere between 1850 and 1860 for Australia where he married (twice) and died. On his first marriage cert in Australia he stated that he was a widower. Since I have found no evidence of a third marriage in Australia I believe he was married in England first.

Other common variations of spelling include Hargraves/Hargreave/Hargreaves.

Its not much to go on but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Kayla  :D
