Family History Beginners Board / Advice needed

My Stephenson Line has father Milburn coming to the U.S. (From England) with two sons- John Robert b. 1862 and William Millburn b.1863 the Mother had died giving birth and Milburn remarried in the U.S. a Matilda McNulty (From Ireland b.abt 1845
Here is the mystery:Milburn is listed in these Brooklyn, NY directories:
1872-73 Carpenter 227 St. Mark's Ave.
1875-76 Laborer 371 Lafayette
1876-77 " " " "
1883-84 Janitor 346 1/2 Lafayette
1884-85 " " 260 Greene Avenue Melborn 1885-86 " " " " Melbourn 1886-87 Laborer " " Melborne Stevenson 1888-89 Janitor 346a Lafayette Milbrun Stephseon 1889-1890 Laborer 491 Flushing Avenue Milburn 1892-93 " " 214 Reid
The oldest son was found in the 1870 and also the 1875 census (he is 13) There is no other records yet found for him. He simply disappeared.
Additionally, Milburn eventually dies, the other brother (William gets married and Matilda (step mom)
moves in with him.!Matilda is listed in the 1903 Brooklyn directory as living at 214 Reid and being the widow of Milburn. She was also listed in the 1900 census as living with her stepson (William) but is not with him in 1910. No record has yet been found on her.
I would love to find out where they wound up.
