Europe / England/Wales Census of Calais, France
« on: Thursday 24 August 17 14:08 BST (UK)  »
I seem to remember once, a few years ago, seeing online the results and images of Census returns for the town of Calais, I think 1851, carried out as part of the England/Wales census. Can anyone confirm and where to look for them?

The Lighter Side / Born on a train journey, 1929
« on: Thursday 13 November 14 11:03 GMT (UK)  »
I've just found an article in the "Grantham Journal" for 7th Dec. 1929. (page 6)

A lady travelling from Edinburgh to London on the Flying Scotsman, while the train was stopped at Grantham raised the alarm that she was about to give birth. She insisted on continuing her journey so the train continued. The article says the baby was born "somewhere in Huntingdonshire", and goes on to suggest a problem with the birth registration. The birth has to be registered, according to the newspaper "in the parish" of birth. Calculations by the guard placed the event at Huntingdon.
The woman, Winifred Scott and her baby (to be christened "Elner") were both doing well.

There is no sign of a "Scott" registration in Huntingdonshire nor an "Elner" anywhere else.

A birth that wasn't registered? Or did Mrs Scott wait until she was back in Scotland?

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Millom St George Parish Registers
« on: Sunday 01 July 12 18:44 BST (UK)  »
I am planning a trip up to the northern Record Offices but am confused by Cumbria.

Are the Millom St Georges parish registers only available at the Barrow-in-Furness branch or are they also available on Film or Fiche at Carlisle or Kendall?

I want to see the registers from 1875 to 1915.

Barrow-in-Furness might be too far out of the way for the few records I want.

Thanks in advance.

Huntingdonshire / Wortley in Huntingdonshire
« on: Saturday 30 July 11 13:28 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm trying to find a Wortley in Huntingtonshire. I have two sisters, Lucy and Harriet GINGER, born there circa 1824 and 1827 according to the 1851 census but can't find the town/village. Anyone have any idea where it could be please?

Technical Help / Missing Image File - But It Is There!
« on: Saturday 01 January 11 20:09 GMT (UK)  »
I have copied a census image into the directory I want it in from the internet, but when I go to the directory it doesn't show.

When I go to save it again it does already appear in the "save as" box though.

I've obviously changed a setting or a permission somewhere but don't know where.

I'm using Windows Vista.  Help please!

Ayrshire / Wilfred Chambers of Galston - Freemason
« on: Saturday 10 October 09 12:17 BST (UK)  »
My distant relative, Wilfred Thomas Chambers was born in 1875 to a poor mining family in Nottinghamshire. He followed the same line in the mines certainly until 1904, still living in Bulwell, Nottingham.

I now know soon after this he was made a freemason in Galston, Ayrshire.
A son was born in Galston in about 1909 - Willis Ronald Chambers (died 1990)

By 1911 census he is back in Bulwell, Nottingham running a Grocer and Confectioners (Dealer-own account) and when he died in 1924 was running a pub.

Are there any mason records available for this period that might shed some light on the occasion?

How about parish records of Willis' baptism?

I've just GoogleEarthed the place and it looks like a nice small town with a good well spread street layout. One website though describes it as a 'rathole' - seems unfair!

Monmouthshire / Lavingtons in Newport
« on: Sunday 23 August 09 19:07 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for birth details for Edith and Bessie Lavington for a friend. According to the 1881 census they were born in Newport, Monmouthshire.

RG11 Piece 1198 Folio 42 Page 11

Charles Lavington - Basket Maker - bn1844 Wiltshire
Caroline Lavington  - bn 1845 Dorset
(Charles) William Lavington - bn 1867 Woolwich
Laura Lavington - bn 1869 North Lane, Hampshire (Aldershot)
Ellen Lavington - bn 1871 North Lane, Hampshire
Edith Lavington - bn c 1872 Newport, Monmouthshire
Bessie Lavington - bn c 1874 Newport, Monmouthshire
Fanny Lavington - bn 1877 Yeovil, Somerset
Joseph Lavington - bn 1881 Ringwood, Hampshire

Obviously Charles was in the Army, certainly for the Woolwich and Aldershot births. Is or was there a Army base near Newport?

My only other clue, on GenesReunited there are two entries. One person who has replied to me, looking for both Bessie and Edith, has no further details, just those from the 1881 Census.

The other person has a entry for a Edith Lavington, born 1873 at Aber Gardning, Wales. Although he has read my request for information, I haven't had a reply to where Aber Gardning is, or if indeed it's the same Edith.

Any ideas please?
