Family Bibles / JAMES family bible looking for a home
« on: Thursday 28 July 16 21:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I have here a rather sadly dilapidated but still readable Welsh language bible. It belonged to David James, born in Porth 28th September 1872, and his wife Margaret, born in Aberdare March 28th 1877; married at Pontypridd 26th May 1900. Children and grandchildren are given also.

If these are your ancestors or you know someone who would be interested in having this bible/seeing photos please let me know, would be nice to think it was of interest to someone.

Hello all

Just wondering if anyone might be able to estimate the date of this photo for me. Searches for the photographer's studio have drawn a blank. Alice was born in 1890 if that helps. I've no evidence of her marriage, so unfortunately the absence of a wedding ring isn't much of a guide.

I'm also wondering about her outfit. I'm thinking it may be some kind of work uniform, like a cross between an overall and a dress... any ideas in this area would be gratefully received.

Many thanks in advance,
Sarah

(Sorry it's a photo rather than a scan - the original is at my mother's but I am burning with curiosity today!)

Somerset / Edith Dennis, b 1882 or 1883, connected with Wells
« on: Tuesday 02 July 13 20:55 BST (UK)  »
Hello all

In 1930, aged 4, my grandmother Ida Margaret Walker was sent from Canada to England by her parents to live with an aunt. We think Edith Dennis was her chaperone on the crossing; the ship was the Cunard Alaunia & it docked in London on 16th June 1930. Edith Dennis' age was stated on the ship's documents as 46, and her intended address was 6 Stanley Terrace in Wells, although her 'permanent intended place of future residence' states 'Other part of the British Empire' (i.e. not UK or Eire).

The story is a legend in our family & I would love to hear it from the other side, if anyone can help.

I hope this is an OK request under the rules, apologies if not  :-\

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Teenage emigration
« on: Sunday 30 June 13 09:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

The story told in my family is that my great-grandfather (William Edward James or Walker, b 1882 Costock Notts) emigrated to Canada in his early teens, taking his younger brother Albert (b 1887) with him. I haven't found any definitive evidence of this.

This has always sounded a bit off to me - at such young ages, would they really have been allowed to sail without a parent or guardian? I know things were a little less structured then, but two essentially unsupervised kids seem like the kind of passengers you really wouldn't want on a transatlantic voyage!

Has anyone come across similar circumstances to these?

Many thanks

Sarah

Derbyshire / Missing marriage - Long Eaton 1918
« on: Saturday 29 June 13 21:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

My first post - be gentle  :)

I've been looking for a while now for my great-grandparents' marriage. They both emigrated from England to Canada before 1925, and my grandmother was born in Regina, Saskatchewan in December 1925. Her birth cert states that her parents were married in Long Eaton, Derbyshire in 1918.

Problem is, I can't find any evidence of that whatsoever, in Long Eaton or anywhere else in England (or Canada). Have thought about it from all angles and one thing I'd like to eliminate is that there is some notorious problem with records from that area/period... Does anybody know if that's the case, or anything else that could help shed some light on this, please?

My great-grandmother was Alice Thompson, b 1890 in Pendleton, Lancs & great-grandfather was William James Walker, b 1882 in Costock, Notts. (He may have been illegitimate - his mother's maiden name was James).

Many thanks!

Sarah
