Travelling People / Recycling names
« on: Saturday 16 February 19 21:11 GMT (UK)  »
I’ve noticed in a lot of my Irish traveler family’s that names are recycled, not just naming after a parent but also, if a child dies another is given the same name, a practice that seems strange today. (And confusing, if I ever have children I’ll consider future geniologists  ;D)

Is this something that happened in traveler family’s?  If so was there a reason?

I’ve noticed A lot of janes, johns, James, Margaret and Mary Mary Ann’s too.  I did wonder if the recycled names started off as mary-Ann, Mary-Jane in some cases but then got shortened.

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Yet another 3 Jane Keenan’s marriage carlisle
« on: Thursday 14 February 19 18:39 GMT (UK)  »
I’m looking for a marriage James Keenan & a Jane.  I believe the marriage to have taken place in about 1852 to 1855 in Carlisle

James parents are James and Jane.

They had 3 children born in carlisle that I’m aware of, Jane in late 1852 another daughter Mary, who was possibly a twin to Jane and lastly James in 1858.  They then moved to haltwhistle.  The odd thing is the only Jane Keenan I can find being born in Carlisle is in 1852,  but the 1861 census states she is 6, as is Mary, who I can’t even find a birth record for.

I’m unable to find any record of the marriage, I have checked the parish records and can’t see anything.  Nor can I find anything on the marriage register.

I’d appreciate it if someone else could double check

Cumberland / Wife but no husband.....
« on: Saturday 09 February 19 12:08 GMT (UK)  »
So meet Mary duff, initially found in the 1841 census, in 1851 she was at the same address but now Mary mcclusky (Mary Ann on this census but later identifies as Mary Jane).  In subsequent census she is still Mary mcclusky but no husband she remains in her childhood family home along with other siblings who never marry.

I can’t find a marriage record either.

She is of interest to me as her brother was a witness to a ancestors (Bartholomew keenan). Wedding, and his sister is also married to a mcclusky

Westmorland Lookup Requests / Kendal workhouse lookup / records
« on: Sunday 03 February 19 11:09 GMT (UK)  »
I contacted Kendal records office who are closed to enquires till March

From the 1891 census I know my relative (bartholomew Keenan born approx 1838) was in the workhouse.  I know he lived in Kendal from some time after 1881 & was in court in Kendal in 1890, till he died in 1901

I was asking for record look up, however they told me they have no records from that date.  I’m a bit confused by what it states on the website as to what’s there.  Plus I got a look up from them from 1901 a few years ago for some admissions data.

Has anyone actually looked at the records that could confirm what they hold?

Occupation Interests / Marine dealer
« on: Sunday 03 February 19 10:53 GMT (UK)  »
I discovered an ancestor of mine was a marine dealer, firstly I thought finally someone who possibly had a nice life with a littke business, then I thought about it and the location didn’t add up for it to be any marine

Turns out it’s actually a rag and bone man or a scrap dealer.   Does anyone know where the term marine dealer came from?
