The Lighter Side / Roadblock dates in geneology research in England
« on: Wednesday 13 August 14 04:48 BST (UK)  »
New here at Rootschat and living in Canada.  Have a family tree that was done by a distant relative that goes back to a Waller in Swaledale, Yorkshire around 1600.  That made me curious as to what challenges exist when dates get back that far.  It stands to reason that records get lost etc., but are there particular events that caused things to really break down at certain dates?

The Lighter Side / Seeking info on gradmother's (yorkshire) old temperance poem
« on: Thursday 04 July 13 08:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi, new here.

Am interested in family tree activities and so joined, but this poem has been on my mind since I recorded it of my grandmother Annie Waller as a teen in the 60's.  The title is perhaps Jim's Master's Blue Ribbon.  It's not the greatest, partly due to the accent but also recoding quality, but it is a very moving piece recited after some 60 years and well worth a listen.  It was learned in Sunday school some time in the late 1800's in Yorkshire.  I see it can't be uploaded!?  Perhaps I'll label it .txt and the listener can alter it to .wma.  Hope that's OK.

Anyone have any thoughts on this, who the author may be or other interesting tidbits?  Thanks.

Jack
