Europe / Saul/Charles Berlyn from Holland
« on: Thursday 28 September 17 23:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I have a Catherine married to a Charles Berlyn (b. approx 1814) from Holland in the 1851-1871 census' (Charles is then a widower 1881-1891). The only marriage record I can find between a Catherine and a Berlyn is between a Saul Berlyn and Catharine Davis in 1845 Birmingham (Vol 16 Page 383). I'm not sure why he would have changed his name from Saul to Charles?

The only birth record for a Saul Berlyn in Holland is on familysearch is a Saul Moses Berlijn (b. 1818) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X13M-V5S.

I can't find a passenger list with a suitable time for him coming over to England, the only one I've found is 1854, coming from Rotterdam on the Diana and travelling with an M Berlyn. By this time he would have been married to Catherine.

Any ideas on whether this is all the same person would be wonderful! I can order the marriage certificate as my next port of call, but thought I'd ask here first in case anyone has any bright ideas or knowledge they can share with me!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Kauga, Germany?
« on: Thursday 24 September 15 00:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello all! I'm searching for a place potentially in Germany.... or Prussia.... or neither!

The lady in question is Rebecca Singer (abt 1835-1927, Singer is married name). She describes where she was born differently on all the censuses she appears in and I've tried finding this 'Kauga' but have not idea where it is! I realise it could be an anglicisation from the German accent, so any help would be much appreciated!

1861 - Prussia
1871 - Prussia
1881 - Germany
1891 - Kauga, Germany
1901 - Germany (British Sub)
1911 - Germany

The Common Room / Finding a marriage cert with limited information
« on: Sunday 20 September 15 23:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi all!

I'm looking to find a marriage for my 2x great grandfather, William H Gilbert (1859-1909). He is listed in the 1901 census and on his 1902 marriage certificate to my 2x great grandmother Ada Alice Romain as a widow. There's an unknown 6th child in his obituary (he only had 5 children with Ada Alice) that we're trying to track down!

Unfortunately we have no idea who the first wife is so I'm struggling to find a marriage certificate or a birth certificate for the child.

William H Gilbert was in India with the 100th Foot until at least 1883 and he definitely didn't marry in this time. He next comes up as a widow in the 1901 census at the barracks, DevonDover. I have been given a pointer of movements for the 100th foot until 1901 from a lovely RootsChat member but as it's about regimental movements I'm not sure that individual marriages will be in there. His father was called Thomas James Gilbert and he was born (and married Ada Alice) in Devizes, Wiltshire.

Is there any way of finding a marriage or birth certificate?!

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / ST PETERS/ST ANDREWS DROITWICH - Marriage
« on: Saturday 19 September 15 01:31 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

I was wondering if anyone would be able to look up a marriage for me? It should be in either St Peters (where the bride was born) or in St Andrews (where the children were christened) - I thought those would be the most obvious. The groom is from Exeter, so I doubt that they got married there.

Groom: Joseph Price (born abt 1811)
Bride: Caroline (born abt 1814)

Their fist child was named Mary Ann Gregg Price on her baptism (1835) and Mary Ann Grey Price on her burial (also 1835). Both of these are FamilySearch transcriptions so I assume one of Gregg/Grey is correct. Could Gregg/Grey be Caroline's maiden name? The marriage must be somewhere around 1835 because of this daughter and their subsequent children.

Other helpful info - Joseph is described as a Waterman in the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census'. Any note on skin colour would be much appreciated if it's in the records - one of their granddaughters definitely has a black ancestor, so trying to trace the mystery of who it is!

The marriage records aren't online and I'm not sure when I can get to the archive, so any info is great appreciated :)

Warwickshire / Ada Bunch (b. 1880) - potential black ancestor?
« on: Friday 18 September 15 13:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello all!

This is a photo of a lady named Ada Bunch. My detective work leads me to believe she was born in 1880 in Aston to Benjamin Bunch (1846-1925) and Clarinda 'Clara' Price (1846-1885). She married Howard Knight (b. 1877) in Aston in 1900 and I'm tracing her through the line of her daughter, Joan Mary Knight (b. 1938). Her great-granddaughter is convinced there must be a black ancestor in Ada's history due to the way she looks (especially her hair! We're sure that's afro hair) and that fact that her father suffers from health issues relating only to those of an Afro/Carribbean descent. Both my friend and her father appear completely caucasian.

I'm currently tracing her on Ancestry with the username 1_headlamp so if anyone spots that public tree, it's mine :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated - even if it's just an opinion on whether her hair is afro or not!

World War Two / John Albert Green, d. 1941
« on: Sunday 23 February 14 19:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm looking for information on my great uncle, John Albert Green. He was born on 4th August 1918 and was killed aged 23 in what I believe is a bomb attack on 9th April 1941 on Washwood Heath Road in Birmingham where he lived. I know that he was a member of the armed forces because he sent home a postcard of himself in uniform aged 21. There are no markers or badges on his uniform. His death however, is recorded as a civilian death, is this because he didn't die whilst fighting?

The photo was taken by a photographer based at 6 North Street, Gosport.

There are no mentions of the names of anyone killed in these bomb attacks in the newspapers of the time, does anyone know if I can get hold of his military record? I have no idea what his regiment number might be, and as he went by the name of Robert (Rob) I don't know what he might have signed up as. Even my grandma didn't know what his real name was until we got a birth certificate!

Thank you for your help!
