Kent / Kent theatres
« on: Thursday 10 March 22 13:41 GMT (UK)  »
To an extent this request re-visits others placed in the past...that concentrated on the printer, Charles Mate (senior), of Dover; and Dover theatres.  Mate himself opened a theatre and I have details...But his initial ingress remains a mystery.

My first clue is to correspondence that appeared in 1773, thus suggesting a previous acquaintance.  Mate had been a sailor but it has not, so far, been possible to say when this portion of his life changed to that where the theatre was prominent.

To this end, perhaps contributors can help me with the histories of four theatres in particular - Deal, Dover, Margate and Canterbury.  Mate was very much involved with the Dover theatre but this was at a later date than 1773.

I am aware that each - or even all - of these theatres featured in eighteenth century circuits but I cannot set a time-line.

Any morsels and references would be welcome.

Cornwall / hands and welch
« on: Wednesday 24 November 21 09:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hands and Welch are the names of two booksellers, stationers, bookbinders...in partnership in 1861, with premises in Fore Street, Camelford.  George T Hands is aged 44 and Henry Welch 26.

I've traced Welch back to 1844 when a Pigot directory lists him as a tailor; followed by Slater in 1852-3 (tailor) and a Post Office directory for 1856 (tailor).

There are other, later, references to Welch in census returns and a plausible family history and a business career can be assembled.

But I've had no success at all in tracing the presence of George Hands (he does not appear in the 1871 census, for instance, nor afterwards, as far as I can gather).  I haven't, either, found any death notice.

*
One other query.  I managed to get onto the Cornwall Online Census Project registers for Camelford - a 'typescript' version; but can't get back to this to see if Hands is living in Camelford.

Can anyone help me find the register again?  And can anyone add details to the Hands and Welch history...?  I'd be very grateful.

Devon / J. Pascoe, bookseller
« on: Thursday 11 November 21 12:01 GMT (UK)  »
J. Pascoe apparently worked as bookseller at around the 1840 mark in Newton Abbot.  This is the only reference that I can find (so far).  Can anyone help pinpoint the man and his business - and even elaborate a little?

Monmouthshire / S. Reed, Newport, Monmouthshire
« on: Saturday 23 October 21 11:18 BST (UK)  »
Seeking information about an S. (Samuel?) Reed, active in various ways, including a spel as an agent for Elias Keys (Devonport), printer and distributer of broadside ballads.  As far as I can gather, Reed worked around the mid-nineteenth-century mark but does also figure as agent in a publication compiled by Samuel and John Keys - The Merry Warbler.  S and J were sons of Elias and they both died in 1870.

I've been unable to pinpoint census details; and have not yet found any street directory notices.

I'd be grateful for help.

London and Middlesex / john thomas oxlade
« on: Wednesday 24 March 21 08:21 GMT (UK)  »
Slowly, slowly, the life and times of John Oxlade, bookseller in Portsea 1813-20 and then bookbinder (not printer, as I originally thought) is coming into reasonable focus - this thanks to so many Rootschat correspondents...I'm very grateful.

The current query concerns JO and his family after removal from Portsea and a kind of re-establishment in London, c. 1820.  There appear to be strong connections with William Crawford and his wife, Mary, sister to JO; and it is conceivable that JO and his family lived with the Crawfords for some time.

Three things are still puzzling.  Firstly, JO and his wife, Mary Ann, had a child, Henry, in 1820 but there are no other references to Henry in records.  Would this be on account of an early death (not recorded as far as I can gather)?

Secondly, their second son, John Thomas was born in 1824 and an address is given as 'Edmund Place, Clerkenwell'...And, thirdly, in the 1841 census, JO is listed as a bookbinder (aged 65), his wife, Mary Ann, as a 'bonnet-maker' (aged 40 - which seems to be palpably wrong according to other records, including the Portsea marriage 'allegation' in 1813) and John Thomas as a bookbinder aged 15 - almost certainly another mistake in the census entry.  In 1841, the place of residence is given as Peter Street, Clerkenwell.

I have simply not been able to pinpoint either Edmund Place or Peter Street in Clerkenwell.  Can anybody help to establish these locations?

I should just add that much of the London history of JO involves close family ties in a fairly circumscribed area of London and so identifying precise locations is a handy way of following the progress of one or the of the principals - chiefly JO himself..

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / booksellers in portsea
« on: Wednesday 13 January 21 13:11 GMT (UK)  »
Still pursuing details of the bookseller, Oxlade, in Portsea.  chempat sent me two references in the Hampshire Chronicle but I can't find any sign of the H. Chronicle.  Help!

Apropos  Oxlade (174 Queen Street) - it has been a prolonged enquiry - I can't determine whether he was a printer or whether he was a bookseller only.

And, further, I can't find an age for him when he married Mary Anne Terry in 1813.  The relevant document, an 'allegation of marriage', indicates that both parties have achieved their majority but does this necessarily circle on 21 or is there some latitude?   My only plausible candidate for JO is that he was born in 1770 in London, son of William Oxlade.  The later life of the couple is traceable despite there being anomalies - Mary Anne's age given as 40 in the 1841 census so she couldn't have achieved her majority in 1813.

Once more, therefore, I have to ask for help...please.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / oxlade of portsea

I'm embarrassed at having once more to beg for help...I should explain that my computer went down last year and I'm trying to reconstitute work using notes and the benefits of Rootschat.

There are two references that I cannot raise, both included in a preliminary draft of a study.  They are located in the Hampshire/Portsmouth Telegraph - but my remaining references (stupidly) don't have the precise dates...

The first - from 1813 - is as follows...

This day is published, price 6d (allowed to purchasers) OXLADE'S CATALOGUE of about 3,000 volumes of second hand books...Catalogues at the place of sale 174, Queen Street, Portsea.

The second - from 1816 - is as follows...

It concerns a Thomas Hoare who was 'acquitted of the theft of 16 books from William Oxlade' in Portsea.

I'd be extremely grateful if anyone can enlarge on these references.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / J. Woolfe, Portsea
« on: Tuesday 17 November 20 09:52 GMT (UK)  »
This is to pick up on enquiries made in 2017 (illness prevented any immediate follow-up).  The enquiries concern a J. Woolf, described in newspaper references as a 'vocalist' - indeed, as a comic vocalist.

Rootschat members kindly supplied me with several references but the crucial ones still elude me...When was JW born and where?  I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to pin the man down.  He was certainly active between 1812 and 1820 and was the author (and singer) of a piece entitled Rimes'-alley, printed by Oxlade in Portsea as a broadside ballad.

The newspaper references (as above) give plenty of detail for the period 1830-1840 during which period, more than once, he is described as a 'veteran' vocalist.

All this might suggest a birth somewhere around 1780.  I'm currently pursuing a Rootschat line via the death of his mother in 1837.

I'd be grateful for any information and tips for searching.

Trying to find out about Ann Ryle, sister of James Catnach, ballad-printer, who is thought to have lived in Portsea.  Can anyone help?
