Dumfriesshire / Laurie/Lawrie, Peter and McNiel Mary
« on: Monday 03 April 06 22:02 BST (UK)  »
Looking for Peter LAURIE/LAWRIE and his wife Mary MCNIEL.  They were married in Tynron Dumfriesshire in 1823.  We know they had two daughter, Catherine LAURIE born abt 1834 in Sanguhar and Mary born abt 1836 also in Sanquhar.  We have not been able to find the birth records for either daughter.

Peter LAURIE was a shepherd.  The OPR record shows his birth place as Dalmakerran and Mary's as Glencairn. We have searched the 1851 Census on Scotland's People, but no sign of either Peter or our Mary.  They may possibly be in the 1841 Census.

Mary LAURIE, their daughter married Archibald McMILLAN in 1875 in Glasgow.  Archibald was also born in Sanquhar between 1837 and 1840, but again we cannot locate his birth record.  His parents were Robert MC MILLAN and Christian MC CALL.

We don't know if the LAURIE's had more children, or if they died at a fairly young age.  Any suggestions as to how we can delve further into, what has been up till now, a futile search.   Best Wishes, Bonnie Lassie

World War One / CUNNINGHAM - WW1
« on: Monday 09 January 06 22:13 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for information regarding naval service for our uncle, George CUNNINGHAM -- born in Kinning Park in 1900.  It is our understanding that he served as a seaman in WW1. He lived into his 80's.

Also seeking more information on his uncle, Robert Norval CUNNINGHAM, who was a Private during WW1 in the Liverpool Regiment.  Robert died in Belgium in 1917 at the age of 31.  We have some info from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, but know nothing of his Army career such as medals, etc.

Uncle George's son, also named Robert Norval CUNNINGHAM
was killed on May 11, 1944.  He was a Sergeant in the RCAF, attached to the RAF and flew as a gunner out of Skellingthorpe Air Base.  The crew's lancaster aircraft was shot down over Belgium.  Both Robert Norval CUNNINGHAMS', are buried in cemeteries, in Belgium, about 10 miles apart.

Any suggestions as to how we can find Uncle George's service record, and his uncle's during WW1, will be greatly appreciated.

Best Wishes,

Lanarkshire / 1851 Alexander in Glasgow
« on: Saturday 03 December 05 19:16 GMT (UK)  »
Searching for family of William Alexander in 1851 Glasgow Census.

Found the family in the 1861 Glasgow Census, living on McKechnie Street.  William Alexander was deceased.  His widow, Ann Alexander is listed as head of family.  Listed in the household are Robert, Alexander, James Alexander and Isabella Alexander (age 17).

We have been trying to find the Date of Death for William Alexander, without success.  Also cannot find the DOB for Isabella Alexander (my great, grandmother), probably born in 1844.  Also would like to find William Alexander, Jr. born about 1827 in Calder??  We know he lived in Gallowgate/Calton in 1881.

Any assistance would be appreciated

Down / DOUGAN, John and Agnes
« on: Sunday 25 September 05 02:26 BST (UK)  »
Looking for parents of my ggf, David DOUGAN.  He was born about 1837 "near Belfast"  His parents were John DOUGAN/DOOGAN and Agnes Moffat.  John DOUGAN was a Farmer/Laborer

We have found a John DOOGAN who married a Nancy MOFFAT in Ballyroney, Down, Ireland in 1820. (This record was takens from the OPR of the Presbyterrian Church).  This DOUGAN/DOOGAN Family had several children, one named David.

David DOUGAN is listed the 1861 Glasgow Census.  He was at that time a carpet weaver, born in Ireland.  He married Isabella ALEXANDER in Glasgow in 1863.  David DOUGAN died in 1871 in Calton District Glasgow.  He was had a grocer's store in Calton.  His son, my gf, also named David DOUGAN, was born 4 days after his father's death.  It is said that relatives from Northern Ireland attended the funeral, dressed in tall black hats and mourning coats.  David DOUGAN's death certificate indicate that his parents were still alive in 1871.

We have reached a huge brick wall, and cannot find a way to determine if the David DOUGAN from Ballyroney, is actually our relative.  Any help would be appreciated.

Dumfriesshire / McMillan and McCall - Sanquhar
« on: Tuesday 16 August 05 22:29 BST (UK)  »
Robert McMILLAN and Christian MCCALL were married in Sanquhar, Dumfries, Scotland on February 1, 1824.   We have a copy of the OPR from Scotland's People.

We understand they had many children, one of which, was my grandfather, Archibald MCMILLAN, born between 1837 and 1840.
We have been unable to find Archibald's birth record.

We are hoping to connect with other MCMILLAN researchers who may be related to our family.

Look forward to all replies - Best Wishes

Dumfriesshire / Laurie - Dalmakerran and Tynron
« on: Friday 12 August 05 03:46 BST (UK)  »
We have the OPR copy listing the marriage of our gggf Peter LAURIE and gggm Mary McNIEL on January 2, 1824 in Tynron.  Peter was from Dalmakerran and Mary from Glencairn.  We have been unable to ascertain their birth information, and also their death records. Peter LAURIE was a shepherd.

We have two daughters born to Peter LAURIE -- Catherine LAURIE born about 1834 and Mary LAURIE born about1836, both born in Sanquhar.  Their birth records are also illusive.  We have used LDS and Scotland's People, but to no avail.  We believe there may have been more children born to this couple.

Catherine LAURIE married Robert GRIERSON in Glencairn in 1855. (Her father Peter LAURIE was shown as deceased on her marriage record). Mary LAURIE married Archibald McMILLAN in 1875 in Glasgow.  Please help us over this brick wall.  Best Wishes Bonnie Lassie (Florida - USA)
