Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Coalville Marriage Lookup Palmer/Slattery 1956
« on: Sunday 07 September 14 13:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi guys, I know this is probably a longshot, but I cant get to the Record Office til later in the week and Im impatient!

My husband's father (Bernard Meakin bn 1928 Coalville ) was illegitimate (and his birth wasnt registered til 1973).  His mother - Doris Amy Meakin (bn 1902, Nottingham, by 1911 lived in Coalville) - is named as such on Bernard's birth certificate.  We know Doris ultimately ended up with Benjamin Charles Palmer and my husband thought they were married.  I cannot find a marriage record for Palmer/Meakin.

However I have just found a marriage record for Benjamin Charles Palmer to Doris A Slattery in Coalville in 1956.   What I want to know is could this have been Doris Meakin with a different name?

If anyone has access to this record at all, I wanted to know both of their ages, occupation, father's name and occupation.  If no-one does then I shall be spending some time with the microfiches at the Leicestershire Record Office.

Thanks!

Suffolk / John Samuel Ridgeon Census confusion
« on: Sunday 17 August 14 21:36 BST (UK)  »
I havent been on here for a while but I am back on the family tree with a vengence (and once you start, you cant stop!).

John Samuel Ridgeon was born approx 1861, his mother was Adelaide Ridgeon (nee Wilson).  I have him on the 1871, 1881 and 1901 censuses (censii?).  Each time he is living with Adelaide and various different siblings and each time he is listed as "single".  I am a bit stuck for the 1891 census as I cant find a "single" John.

I can find a John Ridgeon living with a spouse, Louisa (bn London) in 1891 with some children.

1911 census John Ridgeon is with wife Louisa (bn London) with children.  Clearly these two Johns are the same person.

The 1901 census shows my John with his mother and he is single.  However there is another 1901 census showing a John Ridgeon with wife Louisa and children.   Is it at all possible for a person to be recorded twice on one census night?    The age of 1901 John living with mother is 48 which does seem a little old compared to other records, but I often find discrepancies with ages.

The alternative could be that John with Adelaide wasnt actually her son but she said so to avoid any possible embarassment or gossip.  I dont know!

Im not asking anyone to do any investigating for me, Im just thinking out loud and wondered if anyone had an opinion.  This is all set in Bury St Edmunds by the way.

Staffordshire / The mystery of Annie Badger
« on: Thursday 07 November 13 13:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi guys, Im a bit stuck with this lady.

The story as much as I know :

Annie Badger was born in Walsall in abt 1887.  She ran away from home and ended up in Hay on Wye, Wales, in 1906 where she met Harry Campion.  Harry was in the army, and in 1907 he came back to Hay to find Annie was in the Hay workhouse with a baby boy.  On admittance to the workhouse Annie had changed her name to Polly Johnson.  She did so because she didnt want her parents to be found.  A marriage was arranged in 1909, and further children were born, including my grandfather in 1919 (who I cant name as he is still alive).  She was in the 1911 census living in Hay with Harry and children.

The above information came from Harry Campion's WW1 army records, it was quite fascinating as I knew nothing about my gt grandparents.

Im trying to trace Annie back but seem to be struggling.  There are a few Annie Badgers born around 1887, none in Walsall, but one in Wolverhampton seems to be the most promising.

I have discounted these (all info from the 1911 census):

Annie Badger b 1888 Wolverhampton.  In 1911 she was living with her parents.
Annie Badger b 1885 Gnosall.  1911 seems to be a nurse in London.
Annie Badger b 1890 Wolverhamption.  Also known as Ann, living with parents in 1911.

So, the one I think is my Annie :
1891 census b 1887 Wednesfield
1901 census b 1887 Wolverhampton
Mother - Martha Badger

However, in 1911 census (when we know she was living with Harry Campion), Martha's census has Martha living with her son in law Charles Tomlinson and daughter Ann (not Annie).  The ages of Ann and Annie match.

So is my Annie not in fact Martha's daughter?  And how do I find my Annie.  The marriage certificate is no use as she called herself Polly Johnson and father's name was John Johnson, and I cant order a birth certificate until I know which Annie she really is!

I know you may say ask my grandfather, but he is 94, hard of hearing and has selective memory loss.  He has always thought he was Welsh through and through but Ive since discovered his father Harry is in fact from Birmingham, so I dont think he knows much about his past.

Can anyone offer any guidance as to where I go from here please.

Thanks

World War One / Trying to find sevice records
« on: Wednesday 16 October 13 21:55 BST (UK)  »
My husband has found some medals belonging to his step grandad. We dont know much about this man. We know him as Charlie Palmer.  Charlie was with and possibly married Doris Meakin. Doris had an illegitimate son, Bernard who Charlie took on. Bernard, who is my husbands father, kept his surname as Meakin and weirdly didnt have his birth registered until 1973. He was born in 1928.

Anyway,  we have these WW1 medals of Charlies. He has an envelope addressed to him in Coalville Leicestershire from 1911 which is when we assume he signed up.  The envelope has Mr B C Palmer. I have no idea what the B stands for.

On the back of the 1914 Star medal is T4-245582 Dvr:B C Palmer ASC.

The Victory Medal and the British War medal have T-82 Dvr B C Palmer ASC

Can anyone help me as to where I can find the service rcords. I have been looking on Ancestry but its difficult without knowing his full name  I didnt know if any of you would be able to help from the information from the medals.

Thanks

The Common Room / It certainly pays to read every piece of information
« on: Friday 04 October 13 16:27 BST (UK)  »
My maternal grandfather's family is the final branch I have looked at. All other branches have been growing nicely, but for some reason Id not really got into this.  However, over the past week I have been digging a bit more.

According to the birth register my grandfather's mother's maiden name was Johnson.  I knew gt gt gdad was Harry Campion, so I searched and found a marriage between Harry and who turned out to be Polly Johnson.  I found them on the 1911 census, but her name had changed to Annie Campion (this was 2 years after they married, and everything else on the census added up).  I did wonder why Polly and Annie were the same person, after all neither name is a contraction of the other.

But, then I realised Harry must have served in WW1 so I found his records. And today I sat and read them.  It turns out Harry and Annie Badger met in 1906 after Annie had run away from home. When Harry was discharged from the army in 1907 he found out Annie was living in the workhouse, having changed her name to Polly Johnson and had a baby.  His captain from the army arranged a marriage and christening.  Polly listed her father on the marriage certificate as John Johnson.

Further reading shows questioning from the army with regard to Annie/Polly receiving support having had a baby during Harry's time serving in WW1.  At this time she was going by the name of Annie Campion, and explains everything by saying she had run away from home and once in the workhouse they wanted to trace her parents so she gave a false name - Polly Johnson.

Before I knew this I was tracing Polly Johnson as though she were my ancestor with a father of John Johnson.

It just goes to show if I hadnt read all the service records thoroughly, I never would have known my gt gmother was actually Annie Badger... and now I have another branch to climb!

My grandad fought in this regiment in WW2. Although he never said why he joined them, my dad is convinced that to serve with them, you had to have Irish (well, Northern I would guess) ancestry.

Is this true?  Ive gone back about 4 generations in most directions from grandad and haven't found a connection to Ireland.

The Common Room / How did I not find this sooner!
« on: Wednesday 18 September 13 19:58 BST (UK)  »
Ive seen many answers to queries referring to IGI.  Ive never really looked at what that was and wondered what it meant.

Today I saw in the WDYTYA mag a reference to Familysearch.  I thought it looked interesting and Id give it a go sometime.

This evening I saw IGI mentioned again on here and Googled it.  I entered an ancestor's name and lo and behold up popped his baptism along with confirmation of his parents (which I was desperately needing).

I feel like Ive had my epiphany moment!!
