Kent Lookup Requests / Dartford Union Workhouse 1901
« on: Saturday 17 December 16 06:22 GMT (UK)  »
The 1901 Census shows a person I believe to be my GGGrandfather (Thomas Humphreys b. 1825, Wendover, Buckinghamshire)  as an inmate at the Dartford Union Workhouse. I would like to find out more about him - why was he there, how long was he there, when did he die? etc.. The Centre for Kentish Studies, which is where I believe the records are housed, does not appear to list any online capacity for research.  Can anyone suggest a way to access these records given I am not able to get there.  :)

Suffolk / Gildersleeves
« on: Wednesday 25 May 16 07:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi....my grandmother was a Gildersleeve born in London but her Father (Harry b1855-1915) came from Saxmundham, Suffolk.
I believe his parents were William Gildersleeves (1813-78)  and Sarah Bobbit (1814-86).
I believe William's parents were Robert Gildersleeves (1777- 1834) and I think Mary Whyard (1777-1853).  But Roberts death in Stamford, Suffolk says he was 69 years which would mean he was born before my suggested date.  I think I have confused the Robert Gildersleeves - there are many of them. I suspect I have missed a generation but I cannot seem to locate it.
I also thought Robert married Mary Whyard but I cannot remember where that info came from and I have not recorded it. Also I have found a record which suggests that a Robert Gildersleeves was married to a Mary Proom - 27/12/1815 ?  around the same time as the one I was looking at.. Is he the Robert Gildersleeves who was the Father of William? .....I dont know where to look to find out further information as to:
a) who is the correct Robert Gildersleeves ? ie my gGrandFather's grandfather ?
b) who did he marry ?
c) his antecedents?
d) where can I find a photo of Saxmundham in the 1850's or later ?

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.  :D

Derry (Londonderry) / Henry McCloskey - Agivey, Aghadowey
« on: Monday 13 October 14 04:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi.  I am trying to find out further information on Henry McCloskey b.20 Dec 1872 in Mullaghmore to Patrick McCloskey (18844-1904) and Ann Wade (c1847-1877).  I found his birth details but then nothing.  His sisters that I have found - Elizabeth (b.c.1873) Annie (b.1874), Mary Jane (b.1876-1877) and stepsister Margaret (b.1881) attended Culcrow School .  I think I knew of his existence when I checked the schools records but did not find any details for Henry attending this school at the PRONI sources.  I have been unable to find any Irish death or marriage or Census 1900.  Yet we have a photo which we think shows the brother Henry - one about 18 and another late 20's - we think located in Agivey, Aghadowey.  There are several Henry or H. McCloskey's (one spelt McCluskey) emigrating around 1890 from Derry but I cannot determine their place of origin in Derry.  (There are several Henry McCloskey's from Dungiven which I dont think are related).

There is a view in the family that whilst one sister ended up in Glasgow, two sisters went to Australia (Annie and Margaret) and that family also went to US.  I have looked at the US Census and again find a couple of references to a Henry McCluskey or McCloskey with only one perhaps being right in the general details. I have tried to look at marriage in US sources but I am not sure I am getting them all, just several states?
How do I find out the details behind the general descriptor of birthplace - Ireland - in Census data ?  It doesn't look like it is collected.
Is there a general register of all marriages in the US ?
How do I move forward with this ?  Any thoughts would be welcome ?  Thanks.    :-\ ;D

Aberdeenshire / Marjory Forsyth
« on: Tuesday 20 August 13 01:15 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information on the Mother of Marjory Forsyth who was b. 1892 or 1893 in Aberdeen on, we believe, 5 December. Marjory was an illegitimate child.  I have not been able to locate a birth record for her.  Scotlands People has no record of a birth for her name.  Marjory was brought up by my GGMother in Elgin, Annie Bonnyman 1860-1923 after being 'boarded' with her pre 1901 whilst her birth Mother went overseas for a time.  By 1911 Marjory had assumed the surname of Bonnyman.  We wish to find out more about Marjory's biological family.  I do not know Marjory's Mother's name but assume it was Forsyth.  I believe she emigrated to Canada. She was to return to collect Marjory (Madge) when she got settled but did not return until  Marjory was well into her teens. I would be grateful for any information that can be provided of a Forsyth female who gave birth, not married and probably emigrated.  Thank you for reading.  :)

Moray (Elginshire) / John Bonnyman -Tailor - Elgin
« on: Tuesday 20 August 13 00:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi.  My Great Grandmother was born Annie Sim (sometimes called Annie Grigor) b.2 June 1860 Bishopmill, Moray - she married John Bonnyman, in Elgin in 1886.  She was his 2nd wife as his first wife, Elizabeth McIntyre, had died.  John Bonnyman b.1834 in Bellie. His parents were James Bonnyman and Helen Rennie or Rannie.  He was a journeyman tailor living at 129 High St, Elgin.  He died in Mar 1901 and is buried in the cemetery of Elgin Cathedral.  From his first marriage he had children  James d 7 years, Isabella Maurice d.1917, Robert d.1919 and Alexander not sure when he died. I would be interested to make contact with any other researcher who has information relating to the family of this John Bonnyman.   ;)
