Someone started an enquiry on the Manchester Regt forum regarding the man named above.
I have found this intriguing.
There is a memorial stone dedicated to his memory at Busk Wood, Little Langdale, Cumbria.
He died of wounds 22nd January 1918 , he is buried at Lister Lee Cemetery Halifax.
I have checked the census for 1901 and found an 11 yr old boy as a resident scholar at The Orphange, Halifax. He was listed as born in Halifax.
On checking the 1891 census the first one of a boy born 1890 aged 1, comes up as a James L Lee but on checking actual census it is definitley a "D" not an L.
This James is living with his father William Lee aged 28 and his mother Mary Lee she is aged 23. Wm is a grocer /greengrocer born Shipley, and Mary is listed as a grocer manageress born Halifax. The address is a difficult one. 7 Coco H's (sp) between Northgate and Cross St, St John the Baptist Parish, Halifax.
I then found in 1889 a William Lee married a Mary Denton in Halifax.
I would love some help here, is it the same person? I am pretty sure it is. Why is there a Memorial Stone in Cumbria? is there a story out there. Could someone possibly see if there is an obituary in the paper in Halifax? How come he was in an orphanage if it is him? What happened to his parents ? Please if you can help in any way I would really appreciate it.
most sincerely
