Armed Forces / Service record - What does it say?
« on: Wednesday 26 October 05 14:23 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I've been lucky enough to find my great grandfather's service record from TNA. Grandad Harmer was a Cook in the Royal Navy & just by sheer chance of looking at this list & finding the earlier listing, I have found him.
Hopefully I've managed to attach the file I downloaded. Can someone please take the time to decipher what is written for me please.  From what I knew of him before I obtained this record, he was born abt 1888, in married in 1908 & had his 1st son in 1908 & 1st daughter in 1911 all in Sheerness, Kent but by 1920 he was in Frittenden, Kent. I can just about read the Ships names but I'm struggling with what's written on the left had side of the page.

Hoping you can help me.

« on: Wednesday 19 October 05 16:59 BST (UK)  »
Can sks please translate what's been written as the birthplace of Mr John McDonald on the 1861 census RG9/4460 folio 57.  It's been transcribed as Caithnep Cuttnepher, Scotland but I think it could be Caithness.

Help please

Sarajane :)
