Canada / Samuel Gideon Baggs - Newfoundland.
« on: Friday 06 January 17 16:10 GMT (UK)  »
  Good Morning,

I wonder if anyone can help me with the above individual.  Samuel Gideon Baggs was born, we think, in September 1913, and I am trying to locate a copy of his birth certificate for his son.  How much easier can it be?  I have the month and year, but we have a problem with the location.  On all census records/official documents his birthplace varies between United States and St. John's, Newfoundland.  I have found sibling births in Mass., but can't find Samuels birth in either place.  Can anyone point me in the right direction.

My cousin, who's parents split up when he was a baby, needs his fathers birth cert. to apply for British Citizenship after having lived in Scotland with his Scottish mum, for 66 years.

Many Thanks for any help,

Christine.

Tyrone / 'Bechum' - Does anyone know this surname?
« on: Saturday 30 March 13 01:10 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me with the above surname?

My 3x GGrandmother, Fanny Alexander, nee Bechum was born c. 1791/2. Her parents, according to her death certificate, were Matthew Bechum and Rhoda Smith.  Fanny died in Glasgow in 1869 and I'm wondering if the name has been misspelt, as I cannot locate anyone in Ireland with this name. It wouldn't be the first time I've had to try my best Irish accent to locate a name, but this one has me stumped.  Does anyone recognise it, or what it should be?

Many Thanks,
Christine.

Lanarkshire / Union Street/Moncur Street, Calton.
« on: Thursday 16 September 10 01:24 BST (UK)  »
Thanks to Santi 's response to another post I have discovered that Union Street in the Calton is now Moncur Street,  more commonly known as 'The Barras'.

My father  and his siblings were born at 11 Union Street in the 1920 /30's and I would just like to make sure that I have that right.  Does anyone know when the name change occurred?

I wish I'd known this in July when I was home and went  past Moncur Street on my way to visit his sisters.  Next time I'll stop a while........ :)

Santi.............. Many Thanks.

Clackmannanshire / 11 Candleriggs, Alloa.
« on: Monday 24 November 08 03:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

Can I pick someone's brain?

In the 1901 census I have a relative and her family living at 11 Candleriggs, Alloa.  Can anyone tell me what was at this address.  I'm pretty sure they didn't have a house large enough to accommodate the people listed at this address, so it must have been some  sort of Institution.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Christine.

Dunbartonshire / Reverend James Lamb - Old Kilpatrick - 1867.
« on: Thursday 29 November 07 04:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am in possession of a transcription  of a letter from a distant relative, Rev. James Lamb.  In the letter to another family member, he states that he " has been in Old Kilpatrick for 8 year's.  The letter is dated March 1875.  He mentions that he has "a very nice congregation, though not large, but sufficient to give me plenty of work".  He states that he has 4 children, 3 boys and a girl.
Quote
Last year about this time, I was presented by my congregation with a silver salver and a purse with a hundred sovereigns, but much better than that we have been highly favoured in being permitted to see the good fruits of our labours.  We shared in the Revival which came to Scotland last year and which reached it's culmination through the labours of Moody and Sankoy, the American Evangelists.'

Does any of this mean anything to anyone?

Down / McCulloch, Newry Co. Down?
« on: Friday 02 November 07 01:47 GMT (UK)  »
For more years than I care to remember, I've been banging my head against a brick wall due to my McCulloch Family.  That was until a couple of weeks ago, when a lovely lady contacted me with a shared connection, and, a sledge hammer for my brick wall. ;D ;D ;D

I knew, like probably most west coast Scots, that most of my ancestry would end up (or begin) in Ireland.  The 1881 Govan census told me that, but my new found relative could tell me WHERE. Newry Co.Down.  ;D ;D

It would appear that the family had a construction company, and  according to 'family lore', they won a contract to build a hospital in the town.  The story goes  that, due to spiralling costs brought about by new safety rulings, the family were bankrupted.  Hence the move to Scotland.

Now to the reason for the above epic , can anyone help me with this family?   Does anyone know anything about this hospital?  I couldn't bear another brick wall, for the sake of my sanity, please, can anyone help? :'(

Armagh / James Hamil/Hamill - Ardmore, Lurgan.
« on: Sunday 22 January 06 02:02 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to track down any info on James Hamill of Ardmore.  James, my gg grandfather was married to a Sarah Ann Laverty.  I believe they had at least 3 sons.  My g grandfather, Michael Hamill was born in Ardmore on 13 July 1869.  By the time of his marriage in 1891, he had moved to Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland.

Can anyone help.
