Lanarkshire / James Marshall who sailed away 1857
« on: Friday 28 February 14 12:12 GMT (UK)  »
My wife is attempting to research her family history.  Her great grandfather was James Marshall. She believes he was a free settler to Van Diemen's Land and travelled here with  brother William on the Forest Monarch, arriving in  Launceston on 20th July 1857.  James was 22 years old and William 19. Both were listed as gardeners.
The ship sailed from Glasgow, and carried nearly 300 Scots.
Where would she need to look to find records of James' family and birthplace?

Buckinghamshire / Great Brickhill - James Peppiatt
« on: Friday 28 February 14 11:40 GMT (UK)  »
My wife has a convict ancestor - James Peppiatt.  The few records she has been able to find so far indicate he was from Great Brickhill.  He was a 24 yr old bricklayer , transported for larceny to Van Diemen's land in  about 1834.  His trial was in Aylesbury.
How would she go about finding records of his parents and siblings?  Also any records of james prior to his crime (eg where did he work, was he married...)
An unsubstantiated  family story was that he worked at Woburn Abbey at some point.
Any clues gratefully received.
