Armed Forces / George Guy, Soldier in Maidstone 1851
« on: Monday 08 January 18 14:07 GMT (UK)  »
I have a marriage certificate dated 17 Sept 1851, George Guy, Bachelor, 26, Soldier  address is Barracks Sandling Road, Maidstone, his father is William Guy also a soldier.

His wife Victoria Frances Albo gave birth to their son George Augustus Guy in St Malo, France in Augus 1852.  On 1851 census she was living with her family in St Helier, Jersey and she was there as a widow with her son in 1861.

George Guy is still a mystery, which regiments were in Maidston in Sep 1851 and were any of them sent to France?

Glamorganshire / Penrhiwtyn Infirmary, Neath
« on: Friday 24 March 17 15:27 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me if this building still exists, are there any photos of it?  Also are there any photos of Maria Street in Neath?

Also was there a Barnardo home in Neath in the 1930s?

I have a birth certificate showing that my grandfather was born in Penrhiwtyn Infirmary in 1933, he was placed in Barnardos when he was very young.  His parents were Ernest John Mitchell and Elizabeth Vaughan but I can't find a marriage, the address on his birth certificate is 25 Maria Street

Dumfriesshire / Christopher Richardson of Mouswald
« on: Sunday 05 March 17 18:51 GMT (UK)  »
I am searching for Christopher Richardson, father of Robert Richardson 1807 and Jacob Richardson 1804, his wife is recorded as Diana Tod but I haven't been able to find a marriage on either Familysearch or Scotland's People.

In 1851 Christopher was living in Annan with his daughter Mary Irving (I haven't found her baptism either), she was a widow born Cummertrees.

I found Christopher Richardson baptised Mouswald 7 June 1768 son of John Richardson and Janet Dickson but I can't find Diana

It looks like Shelgholm Park ?  does anyone know what it might be?

I have attached a screenshot showing a few places on the same page, it is the bottom line I am struggling with

Travelling People / Counselletta Smith
« on: Wednesday 01 February 17 16:31 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information about Counselletta Smith who married Henry James in Croydon, Surrey in 1915.  Henry was a widower by 1939.  I can't find any birth or baptism record for Counselletta (I have checked spelling variations) and I am not sure where to look next.  Henry was born in 1890 according to 1939 National Register, and on his WW1 papers he was 24 when he enlisted in 1916, so I assume she was roughly the same age.

There are other Counsellette, Counciletti etc Smiths born in different periods, but I have no idea how -or if - they are connected.

Durham / Where is Dog Lown or Dog Town in county Durham
« on: Sunday 18 September 16 19:39 BST (UK)  »
researching James Lightfoot baptised at Trimdon 2 Feb 1873 son of Francis Lightfoot and Mary Conlon, in 1881 the family are living at Hetton le Hole and his place of birth is Coxhoe, Durham but all later censuses give his place of birth as DOG followed by town or lown, in 1911 it says Dog Loom? in Scotland but he was born in county Durham.

I can't find anything that could be a match - does anyone have any ideas?

Yorkshire (North Riding) / 51st Regiment of Foot at Northallerton
« on: Saturday 16 July 16 10:31 BST (UK)  »
I have a marriage of Nicholas Henning, Serjeant 51st Foot to Jane Fossick of Burneston, North Yorkshire on 10 Feb 1806.  According to the Banns he was quartered at Northallerton.

A year later they had a son Thomas baptised at Burneston, son of William Nicholas Henning Serjeant of the 51st Regiment and his wife Jane of Exelby.  There is a William Henning, Serjeant of 51st in the Medal Rolls, he took part in the battle of Corunna.

Where would the 51st Foot have been based while in Northallerton?  How do I find records?
I would be grateful for any advice.

I found two baptism transcriptions on Findmypast for children of William and Jane Henning.  I wonder if someone could check the parish records to see if there is any reference to the father's occupation.

George Henning baptised Romsey 27 Aug 1815  buried Romsey 18 March 1817
James Henning baptised Romsey 3 April 1814 buried Romsey 21 April 1820

I am looking for William Nicholas Henning a Serjeant of the 51st Foot who maried Jane Fossick in Burneston, Yorkshire while he was quartered at Northallerton.  They had a son Thomas Henning baptised at Burneston on 2 Feb 1807, he appears on 1841 and later census returns but I have found no further record of his parents apart from William Henning on the medal roll for Battle of Corunna.
