Monmouthshire / Rachel Jenkins - Llanfoist ? born 1788 -1793
« on: Thursday 20 July 23 20:54 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find birth / baptism details of Rachel Jenkins who married John Davies in Llanfoist on 23 Nov 1811.  He was a farmer and they lived at Penygraig farm in Llanfoist.  She died 25 Oct 1869 at Penybont farm in Llanfoist and was buried at Llanelen on 29 Oct 1869. Her death certificate said her age was 81 which suggests she was born about 1788.
According to census records she was born in Llanfoist.  The 1851 census gives her age as 58 suggesting she was born in 1793.
I cant find any baptism details.  Free Reg has details of Llanfoist baptisms  for the period but doesn't have her name, but other online sources dont have Llanfoist records for 1780-1794 (and Gwent Archives say the pages are missing in the parish register.  I haven't looked at Llanfoist Bishops Transcripts as that would involve travel to the National library of Wales in Aberystwyth.
Does anyone have any ideas of her Rachel Jenkins parents, and/ or her birth /baptism?
Many thanks

Occupation Interests / GWR employment records
« on: Saturday 01 July 23 00:17 BST (UK)  »
I cannot find a GWR employment record for Evan Morris (dob 21 Sep 1860) who was employed for many years as a platelayer by GWR based between Pontypool and Abergavenny. Are platelayer records in a separate register from other GWR employment registers?

Dublin / Joas Garland Baptism 1 July 1752
« on: Friday 02 December 22 12:27 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace an ancestor Joseph Garland who would have been born about 1750 -1755.
I have seen the baptism record on Ancestry of a "Joas" Garland in 1752 recorded in a Dublin Catholic register.  All the names on the page are recorded as Latin equivalents e.g. Richardus for Richard etc.  There are several other "Joas" baptisms on the same register page.     - this is an abbreviation but I am unclear what it represents - is it short for Joseph or John?

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / Sarah from Churchill in Halfshire
« on: Saturday 05 November 22 13:13 GMT (UK)  »
I want to find the birth surname and baptism details of  "Sarah" who married George Moreton (Morton / Mourton). In the 1871 census of Caunsall (Wolverley) Worcs, she is recorded as age 83 and born in Churchill - that would imply she was born around 1788.

When I visited in The Hive some years ago, I searched the Churchill baptisms around  1787 - 1793 without success.  However I now realise there are two Churchills in Worcestershire and I searched the one near Worcester i.e. the wrong parish - rather than the second Churchill near Kidderminster.  If someone could check the baptisms of the other Churchill (Churchill-in-Halfshire) at the Hive for the approximate years  1788-1793 for me to find any "Sarah" that would be amazing and I would be so grateful.
NB: I havent been able to find a marriage record for George and Sarah;  it would be pre 1823 (and possibly pre 1820) as their daughter Mary was baptised in Kidderminster in 1823.  George was baptised in Bromsgrove in 1800.
Many thanks

Armed Forces / American war of independence: battle of Bunkers Hill
« on: Saturday 19 February 22 00:18 GMT (UK)  »
I have an ancestor Thomas John (1754-1828) who lived at Bunkers Hill, Merthyr Tydfil from 1790.  A local newspaper article in 1880 said the area was called Bunkers hill because he had fought in the American war of independence. From other sources, I think he probably fought at the Battle of Bunkers hill in 1775. He married in Merthyr in 1788 so his military service must have finished by then.

Several regiments fought in that Battle. I don’t know which regiment he would have been in. He was welsh speaking so I am sure he was born in South Wales but I don’t know where.
Was regimental recruitment geographical in those days or could he have been in any regiment?
Other than muster rolls at the national archives are there any other potential sources to find out more about him?
How long did people serve in those days?
Where should I start?

Worcestershire / Robert Howorth 1743 - ?
« on: Tuesday 20 July 21 19:51 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out a bit more about this man and his first wife Sarah and would appreciate any help.
He was baptised in  Worcester All Saints on 28 Dec 1743 , the son of Robert and Martha Howorth.  He married on 1st May 1766 "Sarah Howorth formerly Baddalieg"  at Worcester St Nicholas.  The church register is a bit ambiguous here and says "Parish and a minority and married with the consent of Benjamin Baddalieg, the natural father".  There were several children in subsequent years.  Robert Howorth remarried (as a widower) Catherine Longmore at Kidderminster on 4th October 1774.  I have found no subsequent baptisms for his children but there are  several burials of children recorded at Kidderminster in 1777.  I can find no trace of his death or his first wife's death.  He had several brothers in Worcester.  I think his father Robert Howorth died in Worcester in the late 1760s; I believe there is a will but I haven't seen it.
I am particularly interested in his daughter Ann , baptised in 1770 in Worcester St Nicholas, who subsequently married David Richards in 1803 in Trelawney, Jamaica.
Any help would be appreciated.

Radnorshire Lookup Requests / Evan Morris
« on: Sunday 11 July 21 00:08 BST (UK)  »
I believe my ancestor Evan Morris was born somewhere in Radnorshire in 1779 or 1780 but I have no idea where. Any suggestions of which parish in Radnorshire might have a baptism record for him?

Monmouthshire / Trostrey Monmouthshire
« on: Thursday 25 February 21 10:59 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to see the baptism page for Trostre(y) for 1745 - according to FreeReg, there is a Richard Jones baptised at Trostre on 6th October 1745 with  parents John and Mary - but when I look at the Trostre registers on Find my Past there appear to be no records for that decade.  Any ideas??  Any other original source?

Thanks

Monmouthshire / Evan Morris: 21/09/1860 - 23/01/1940 GWR employment records
« on: Monday 25 January 21 16:59 GMT (UK)  »
All 4 of my great grandfathers were employed by the Great Western Railway.  I have easily found the GWR employment details of 3 of them , but can't find details of the 4th.  He lived in the Goytre area and was some sort of "platelayer" for the railway for very many years.  He described himself in 1886 as a "Packer on the line".  In the 1911 census he described himself as a "Railway Platelayer Ganger".
The GWR records I have seen on Ancestry seem mainly for operating staff or engineering staff , rather than "Track maintenance staff".  Any help with where I might source  details of his railway employment would be appreciated.
