Family History Beginners Board / Strange middle name
« on: Tuesday 24 April 18 14:36 BST (UK)  »
My nanna's brother was called George Eric Cook Wilmore. My nanna and all her siblings had the surname Wilmore as obviously it was their fathers name. However, George was born two years after the father Wilmore had died, so he couldnt have had the same father and must've been a step-brother. I assume he was named Wilmore after his mothers married name.

Father Wilmore died 9th July 1915.
George was born 30 Sep 1916.
Mother Wilmore married Whitney 29 June 1919.

Its the middle name Cook that intrigues me. I'll have his birth certificate in a couple of days but wondered peoples thoughts were on it.

Would Cook be considered a normal name, or would you think im right to think it is possibly a fathers name?

He was born to late to really be a Wilmore, and 2-3 years previous to marriage to Whitney.

Thanks in advance

Just wanted to grab your thoughts on this,

I have an Alfred Phillip Wilmore

Born 27th April 1896 (Kings Lynn)
Baptised 15 July 1898 (Kings Lynn)
(Parents = Moses Alexander Wilmore & Frances Wilmore, nee Heathorn)

At 4 years of age in the 1901 England census he was living with parents and siblings in Kings Lynn.

At 15 years of age in the 1911 England census he was living with parents and siblings in Kings Lynn and is recorded as being a Shop Draper Boy.

Now he disappears. I cannot find no Marriage or Death for this chap.

Not to be confused with his elder brother of the same name who died as a child (1894-1895)

HOWEVER, either he died, or on the 1939 register he's changed his name to Reginald Phillip Arthur Wilmore (Born on the same date: 27 Apr 1896). Was this common practice or am I looking into the similarity of the name and the coincidence of the exact date of birth too much.

Proofs I have:

Alfred Phillip Wilmore, born 27 April 1896. (The baptism entry on the 15th July 1896 records the birth date).

Reginald P.A. Wilmore. (1939 Register records date of birth as 27 April 1896).

Either way a little help would be very much appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / Surname differences
« on: Monday 02 April 18 10:26 BST (UK)  »
So in my tree, my 3rd great grandfather is a Wilmore, his father a Willmore, his children are spelled the same but on different census' either not being able to write of just the person recording it, spelt it incorrectly.

I keep going back, and with proof of connection, the names eventually end up as Wilmer.

How do I decipher the names on my tree if one minute a person is one name, but then the next its spelt differently? Do I name the persons as I believe they should be?

Myself directly, I am Hides, but has in the past been assumed as Hydes. My 2xgrandfather was Hides, but two of his children emmigrated to Canada as Hydes and have even been buried with that spelling.

Thank in advance.

I have the 2014 version, but running under windows 10, it tells me it is no longer compatible to run with Ancestry.

80 quid seems a bit steep for the new version, but I am seriously considering it against my wanting to.

Is there any way to get my copy of 2014 to work with Ancestry?

Many thanks in advance

I have this photograph and as the title says I have three questions. I wasn't sure if I had to split the questions or just kill three birds with one stone so to speak.

This image is of Bertram born in 1898 and his brother Sidney born in 1901.

Question 1 - Is the child sat down an amputee or is he sitting on one leg. I think the shoe on his foot seems to be a right footed one which would indicate he is unfortunately an amputee. The owner of the image said his mother used to tell him one of the boys had one leg, but a cousin who knew the boys till they died said they was never aware of it.

Question 2 - Given the ages of these young lads I would assume the picture to be just over 100 years old. It has been in the frame all this time. A newly found family member would like a copy of it. Given the size of the image and pressumably its delicateness, how could a copy be accomplished?

Question 3 - If he had lost his leg, would there be medical records anywhere that could tell us how or why it happened, and most of all, which boy it was that had the disability, was it Bertram or Sidney.

Sorry about the picture, its the best ive been given so far.

As far as I can gather from this school Admission Register the name of the school is:

South Lynn All Saints Boys ?? School.

What are the question marks? I pressume its short for something similar as Sts to the right of Boys is short for Saints.

Any ideas?
Many thanks in advance.

Canada / Im confused, female buried with 1st husband and 1st married name
« on: Monday 12 March 18 19:51 GMT (UK)  »
Did this actually happen? Or am I missing something here...

Brownlow Hides (Hydes) married Ada Blackburn on the 17th March 1898 at Jarvis, Haldimand, Ontario.

I was researching Brownlow who had an accident at the Jarvis GTR Yard. A kind rootschat member sent me images of two newspaper articles re the accident. It turns out that Brownlow was a Sexton (caretaker) of the St Pauls Church in Jarvis. Upon his death, he was laid to rest in the church grounds.

Another kind Rootschat member visited the churchyard on his passings and sent me a few photographs of the headstone.

Ada, his wife died in 1958. The Headstone inscription reads:

Quote
Thy will be done.
BROWNLOW HYDES
1867-1914
ADA. His wife
1867-1958
NATIVES OF YORKSHIRE
ENGLAND

This Ada Hydes on the marriage record states her parents as William Blackburn and Sarah Ann Green.

Now the bit that confuses me, I wanted to close the research that I had so far and am trying to finish Ada on my tree as much as could. But all of a sudden I find a marriage record dated 21st June 1916 in Haldimand, Ontario for a Robert John Watson. He married a widow by the name of Ada Hydes. This Ada Hydes has the same parents, William Blackburn and Sarah Ann Green.

So if Ada Hydes married again, surely she would become Ada Watson. So why as Ada Watson, would she be buried as Ada Hydes with her 1st husband Brownlow. I understand being buried with Brownlow, its the surname throwing me off.

Quote
The Jarvis Record had an article on the 3rd January 1924, titled "Gives Service Book To St Paul's Church". (This is not the whole article) A revised prayer book of the Church Of England in Canada has been presented by Mrs R WATSON. An inscription read in loving memory of Brownlow Hydes. The Gift of His Widow.

Am I missing something?
