My original posting has been modified to exclude the original person referred to who may still be living.  William Egerton Roberts was the father of the original named one and I do have a name and  address for the child taken from William's death registration  which I will pass to anybody who wishes to message me.  Please can anybody who responded to my original posting remove the personal details of the child therefrom

William was my uncle.  He grew up in Conwy Workhouse together with his sister Gweneth (who I have previously posted about).  These children were 'lost' to their parents (My grandparents) and apparently grew up wrongly believing themselves to be orphans

William was born in the Swansea area on 11/11/1908.  His registered name was Geoffrey William but the 'Geoffrey' seems to have been dropped while he was in the Workhouse.  He seems to have 'adopted' the name 'Egerton' from an older brother who died in the same workhouse.

I have discovered that he and Gweneth remained in contact in later life and that he married Annie Jones of Holyhead in Llanbeglig on 12/09/1938.  In the 1939 register they are living in Caernarvon with two closed entries at the same address: possibly their children

Many thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Looking for death of Gweneth Jones - Abergele
« on: Wednesday 02 February 22 15:02 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the death of Gweneth Jones, last known address in August 1972 was 249 Maes Canol Abergele. She was born 3/9/1907 Ardath, Bryn Road, Lampeter as Gwynedd Margaret Myfanwy Roberts.
On the 1921 Census her name appears as Gweneth Roberts, Orphan living with Ellis & ME Hughes (farmer & his wife) Abergele
On Gweneth's husband Maurice Jones Obituary dated 31/8/1972 it states they had lived at Ffynnon Wen, Moelfre,  Abergele from 1944 to 1966. Maurice had been one of the founders of Abergele Young Farmers Club. They had married 24/2/1944.
I would be very grateful for any help in finding what happened to Gweneth after 1972.

I have an aunty who was born in Wales in 1907. She grew up in Conway Workhouse and subsequently lived in a small village in North Wales and I’m 95% sure I have her in 1921 and 1939 and details of marriage in 1944. She apparently believed herself (wrongly) to be an orphan.  Does anybody know of any reason why I should not advertise in local newspapers for anybody that might have known her?

I think she might be my great aunt Ellen ("Aunty Nellie") Roberts. Born in Llysfain in 1886; in 1911 she is living with her mother Barbara in Hereford with occupation 'Domestic Nurse'.  There is something odd about her footwear unless it's a trick of the light.  If the photo is too recent to be her it might be my Aunty Barbara Doughty, born in Woolwich in 1903 but there is no record of her having been a nurse. There is no record of any war service for either of them.  Thanks

(Please forgive me if I don't acknowledge any responses quickly as I will be travelling quite a lot)

New Zealand Completed Requests / Look-up please - 1938 passenger to Auckland
« on: Sunday 02 March 14 15:50 GMT (UK)  »
On 6 January 1938 a lady of this name set sail on the 'Rangitiki' in London bound for Aukland.  She was apparently travelling alone.  Her age was given as 65 and her address as Kingsbridge Road, Parkstone.

There is an outside chance that this was the first wife of my grandfather and the mother of four children who I have been completely unable to trace after the 1901 UK census.  (References - Piece:2477, Folio:37, Page:4 - Name has been misspelt 'Robberts'').  The children's details are Gertrude Gwladys, William O R, Joseph A  and Doris M, all born in Wales in the 1890s ).

Gertrude Snr. was born in Chester in 1872.

What is striking is that although Gertrude and my grandfather apparently split up shortly after the 1901 census the above address is within a mile or so of where he was living with my grandmother in 1938, them having moved there around 1928.

If (big 'if') this was indeed one and the same person I can only imagine that she would have been travelling to join one or more of her children in New Zealand.  The passenger list shows her 'Country of Last Permanent Residence' as 'other parts of the British Empire' which doesn't tie in unless she had moved to NZ (or elsewhere) before and this was a return visit back to UK.

I have done what searches I can to try and find any trace of her or any of her children in NZ but without any success. (There was a Gertrude Ellen Roberts who died in Murchison in 1950  aged 75 but I bought her death certificate and this was definitely not 'my' Gertrude -  although she could have been the passenger on the Rangitiki).

If anybody can find any details on the Gertrude Roberts who travelled to New Zealand in 1938 particularly anything giving any family details I would be really grateful if only so that I can cross her off my list of 'possibles'.

Family History Beginners Board / Which William Hughes Roberts was my grandfather?
« on: Wednesday 15 January 14 23:10 GMT (UK)  »
All his life my gf described himself as an accountant, and was known as such to his children, except in the 1911 census where he appears as a bookseller.  My problem is there are 2 significant trails of newspaper reports which both look like him but which seem to be mutually exclusive.

In the first he is sentenced to 3 years penal servitude for fraud at Carnaervon Assizes as reported in newspapers in 1896 (Liverpool Mercury 18/1/96). This WHR has the right age (25, b1871), the right occupation and is in the right area. Also the last child of his first marriage -of which we were previously unaware - was born in 1896

In the second he is proprietor "W H Roberts" of a Welsh language bookshop in Cecil Court, London advertising extensively in the Welsh press from May 1897 to about 1905.  Ratepayer records show the tenant to be William Hughes Roberts.  My gf was known to be Welsh speaking and this would tie in with his occupation per the 1911 census. Also during this period he met my gm who was living in Woolwich.

In the 1901 census he is living with his first wife and family in Hereford (family name misspelled 'Robberts')

It seems improbable but not impossible that these could be one and the same person.  One thing that would settle it would be to know if the 'first' WHR actually served his 3 years.   If they were 2 separate people I can't see how I could discover which one was my gf without any family knowledge.  Any ideas for further research would be much appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / Searching for a whole family group - Roberts
« on: Sunday 15 December 13 20:00 GMT (UK)  »
I have discovered that my grandfather was married and had 4 children before he met my grandmother (With whom he had a further 11 children of whom at least the first took my grandmother's name). The last record I can find of the first family is the 1901 census when they are living in Hereford.  The family name is misspelled as Robberts but the given names leaving out my grandfather are Gertrude (28), William O R (7), Joseph A (6) Gertrude G (8) and Doris M (5).  In 1911 my Grandfather and Grandmother are living in Cornwall with 2 of their children and also reporting a further 3 children living elsewhere.  I have searched extensively for any further trace of Gertrude and her family including under her maiden name, Sadler.  Assuming they stayed together as a family group it seems to me I might have some success if I could search for a group of people with those given names without specifying a family name.  Does anybody know if this is possible please?
