Hello with greetings from Australia,

Due to limited Kent records access here in Oz, I write seeking info regarding the birth and parentage records of my 3rd great grandfather James Hills Senior and his wife Mary Ann Emery, who appears born in 1791 at Chatham. I believe James and Mary Ann were married on 4 Dec 1815 at St Botolph's, Northfleet, Kent.

Their son James, my 2nd great grandfather, appears to have been baptized at St Georges Gravesend in Nov 1816, and his sister Sarah married Edward Haffel Coy, was born in South Benfleet Essex in 1824. James junior married Louisa Rowe at Portsmouth in 1839, and they immigrated to my home state of Victoria in Jan 1840.

Your assistance regarding James Hill Senior and Martha Ann Emery's parents and families would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for your time and expertise.

Greetings from Victoria,

I write on behalf of a cousin John Riddell, who wishes to find out any details of his Grt Grt Grt grandparents. From Robert Riddell's marriage record to Maria Rooney on 1 May 1851 at Erigle Keerough, all we know is his fathers name was Peter. We believe Maria's parents were Arthurus Rooney and Eleanora ??,

We are hoping you may have access to locals records to fill the missing gaps in our research. Cousin John has also indicated family recollection here is the Riddells may have possibly originated from near the Scottish border.

If it helps, records here indicate Robert Riddell had one brother Thomas born at Curr in 1828, who married Margaret Hood at Carnteel, and have traced their sons William and Robert Henry emigrated to Queensland Aust.

Many Thanks for your time,

Northumberland / Parentage of John Calvert - husband of Anne Spotswood
« on: Sunday 21 February 21 09:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi from Oz,

I am seeking assistance confirming the parentage and death of my 4th Great Grandfather John Calvert, who going by his 3 children's birth records, Isabella B1772 and William B1785 and Matthew B1787, lived in Northumberland during this period. I believe John Calvert's wife was Ann Spotswood, born in 1747 in Cramond Scotland, who married in 1771 at Ninebanks, and died at Kirk Linton Cumberland in Aug 1790.

According to 2 members of Ancestry.com John Calvert may have possibly been born to John Calvert and Mary Carr at Methley in Yorkshire about 1739, however from my limited resource access here in Australia, I am unable to confirm any definite records of John's parentage or his probable death in Northumberland or Cumberland.

Any assistance tracing John Calvert as outlined above, would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks for your time,

Hi from Australia,

For a cousin in Essex, I am trying to confirm the mothers name, and paternal / maternal grandparents names of Frederick ( Fred ) Walters who married Elsie Florence Pragnell, on 4 Feb 1911 at St James church in Stansfield Rd Forest Hill. Other records indicate Fred was born at Lambeth in 1859, ref 1D 257, and was formally named John Frederick Walters after his father John Walters. He served in the 17th Lancers in WWI.

Fred spent time mining in New South Wales in the early 1880s, where he suffered Silver poisoning to a point his skin went blue. After marrying Elsie, they had a son Granville Charles Berkley Walters in 1915, and they family moved to New York, where Fred performed in a number of "Freak Shows". According to his probate record, Fred passed away at Coney Island in 1923, primarily as a result of too many doses of Silver Nitrate which made his skin colour vibrant blue.

Am also very interested to if and how the name Berkley is linked on his maternal side, if possible please.

Many Thanks

Hi,

Seeking further info re above MacDonald family members, in addition to usual info available on Ancestry.com
https://www.ancestry.com.au/family-tree/tree/42805013/family?cfpid=432059925050

Have confirmed -

Donald MacDonald was a twin of James, born 27 Apr 1795 at Logierait, Perthshire, Scotland, to Thomas and Christain MacDonald

Donalds wife was Margaret Robertson, and according to her Vic death record of 1879, she was born c1809 at Inverness, Scotland.

Their only known child was Christina Stuart MacDonald, who married Henry Harvey on 4 Jun 1860 at their family home at Creswick, had a son and 2 daughters, remarried Edward Mill Clifton in 1870 at Ballarat, and had another son.

Am intrigued as to why I am unable to confirm an Aussie death record for Donald MacDonald, who from Rates records, was a farmer at Smeaton via Creswick, from 1872 till 1893.
NB. There was another namesake of Donald MacDonald at Creswick from the 1860s who was a local teacher.
Any further info on our MacDonalds as above would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hi,

Exhausted limited resources here tracing parents details of my cousins' grt grt Christina Stuart MacDonald here.

According to her marriage certificate, she was 27 years when she married Henry Harvey, at Creswick Victoria at her parents house in 1860, as attached certificate. Hard to decipher, it appears she was most likely born at Blair Athole, Perthshire, to Donald MacDonald and Margaret Robertson, or possibly Roberts. Margarets Victorian death record of 1879 states she was from Inverness.

Christina gave 2 of her 3 children born in Australia the middle name of Stuart.

Unable to confirm any birth or marriage or immigration records for Donald, Margaret, or Christina via Ancestry or FamilySearch, so any possible leads would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Hi,

Seeking confirmation of birth details and / or British Navy service record for my Great Great Grandfather Thomas Henry Cunningham (THC).

Alexander Sutherland, author of reference book, "Victoria and it Metropolis 1888" noted THC, as quoting he was from Manchester in Lancashire. The only "Thomas Cunningham" I have found that comes close to details of our THC, is one 5 year old living at Ancoats, son of Peter and Frances Cunningham, in the 1941 Census. Any confirmed info regarding his possible parentage or siblings would be greatly appreciated.

According to 3 late and elderly Cunningham relatives interviewed about 20 years ago in Australia, all confirmed the same folklore / story, that THC served in the British Navy at quite a young age, apparently jumped ship on the east coast of Australia, probably at or near Eden in New South Wales, and began a family with Margaret Murphy from Kiandra, Snowy River, before they married at Bombala NSW in 1866. The 3 Cunningham relics all confirmed that THC's British Navy sword mysteriously disappeared from his farm at Upper Tambo Vic, shortly after he passed away in 1915 at Bairnsdale Victoria. Any info regarding THC serving in the British Navy between around 1851 and 1864 would also be appreciated.

Warm Regards

Hi from Victoria, Australia.

I am having difficulty Down Under, finding any info re birth and parents of Margaret Fry, before she married my 4th great grandfather Benjamin Tupling at St Georges, Bloomsbury, on 12 Feb 1776.
Banns states Margaret was of this parish, however hours of researching limited resources here, has not confirmed a Margaret Fry of this era, and marrying age, in this locality. Benjamin died in 1797 at Marylebone and Margaret passed away there too, in 1798.

As a related question of interest, their only surviving son Benjamin junior was 12 years then, and going by later land tax records of 1816 as attached, he was living next door to a Fry family in Clarendon St St Pancras. Therefore, I believe it is likely a Fry family member may have adopted Benjamin Junior, and I am wondering if there is a UK register of adopted orphans, which may clarify this possibility please?

Many thanks for whatever assistance or leads you may be able to assist with.

Hello - from a distant Australian descendant of James Angus and Isabel Shand, from Huntly, Aberdeenshire.

Research indicates my 3rd great grand parents, were Alexander Angus, born c1786, at Huntly, Aberdeenshire to John Angus and Isabel Shand, and Alexander's wife - Jane Jessamin, born 1795 at Carnie to Thomas Jessamin and Anne Glennie.

As my access to Scottish web records are quite limited from here in Australia, I would really appreciate any info or documents, as to any of the siblings of Alexander and Isabel Angus.

I believe the attached image of James Angus, is the only known photo of him, being the only son of Alexander Angus and Jane Jessamin.

Any and all info regarding this family branch would be greatly appreciated !

Many Thanks
