Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is a shipping list for the John Elder that arrived in Adelaide March 1879.

I recently had a look at the recent SA Maritime Museum website and they list two of my ancestors on the John Elder that my research has led me to believe died in St. Heliers, Jersey years prior.

Their names were Georgina Hale & Ruth Hale. The rest of the family that DID come to SA were James Hale, Hedley Hale, Richard Hale, Ann Hale, Frederick Hale, Ernest Hale and Charles Hale and Ruth Hale (daughter).

Don't you hate it when you thought your research is 100% correct and something like this blows it out of the water. I've contacted the SA Maritime Museum but they haven't been able to advise where their info comes from.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...thank you!

This photo was taken in the late 1800's I believe but would like to narrow down a date. It was taken in Australia and is a portrait of James Hale and his grown family. They left Jersey, St. Helier, Channel Islands in 1879 and came out to Australia. James Hale, the oldest gentleman in the photo died in 1908 at the age of 84 if that helps to date the photo.

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Anna Maria HALE
« on: Thursday 04 June 15 10:14 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

I was hoping to get some help with a brick wall I have. My third great grandfather, James Hale remarried in1869 I believe but his new wife died within 6 months of their marriage. I've been trying to find out her name etc for almost 2 years now.

Last week I discovered the newly launched Jersey Archives online and found a testament for a Anna Maria Hale of Aquila Rd, St Helier, Jersey written in 1869. I ordered a copy which I received today hoping it would confirm that she was in fact married to my ancestor and secondly hoping to discover her maiden name. It confirmed that she was married to James Hale as everything was left to him but I want to find out more such as the date they were married, more about her death and her maiden name.

Can anyone help me or least steer me in the right direction? Visiting the archives is out of the question as I live in Australia.

Thank you!

Family History Beginners Board / Born at Sea??
« on: Friday 26 December 14 02:57 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching a relative who I have no details re their birth other than an obit stating she was born at sea on her parents way to Australia. I have no idea where her parents were travelling from or if their passage was as assisted vs convicts.

Any idea where her birth would be registered if at all?

According to her obit her date of birth would have been 1843.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Marriage in Jersey 1869-1873
« on: Tuesday 10 June 14 08:08 BST (UK)  »
I've hit a bit of a brick wall with my research into the Hale family of St. Helier, Jersey.

According to a book published by one of my cousins my 2nd great grandfather, James Hale, remarried after his first wife Ruth Young passed in 1866. Whilst her book states the marriage was in 1869 no source, name or place has been mentioned other than she died 6 months later and she was a woman of wealth.

According to the book her family after her death paid for the Hale family to relocate to Australia.

Does anyone have any idea where I can look? I've paid for research on the ground in Jersey but due to time constraints and a limited budget they were not able to delve into James' second marriage other than to tell me that there was a death of a Elizabeth Hale in 1872/73. This may or may not have been his second wife.

According to the Jersey Almanacs and census records we now know that James ran the British and Foreign School @ 20 Aquila Rd and later the The James Hale Academy for Boys @ 5 Vauxhall St.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Thanks,
Joanne

Wondering if anyone can help me out.....

According to his son's birth certificate my ancestor Jacob Cox was born in Frankfurt, Germany  approx. 1825 - 1830 and sometime after Oct 1848 migrated to Australia. According to the same certificate he married in Oct 1848 in a Roman Catholic Church in Frankfurt, Germany to a Katherine Plant? No issue. Sometime after he left Germany with or without Katherine. In 1861 he married Mary A Hanrahan in West Maitland. I can't find anything on when he left Germany nor his parentage. As Cox is generally not a German sounding name I did a bit of digging and supposedly the surname Koch can sometimes be converted to Cox in an English speaking country. This mystery is made just a little bit harder as Jacob was a farmer and illiterate....so many spelling errors and differences in ages in the birth and death certificates I have obtained.

Does anyone have access to German records..

Thanks  :)

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Stuck! Mathew (or Matthew) Hale b approx 1731
« on: Sunday 09 February 14 06:25 GMT (UK)  »
Wondering if anyone can help point me in the right direction.

My 4th great grandfather was Mathew Hale born approx 1731 on the Isle of Wight. I cannot confirm his date of birth nor the place of birth other than what is noted on an online family tree pertaining to his wife's family. Mathew went onto to marry Mary Small in 11 Oct 1757 in the parish of Godshill, Isle of Wight and was buried on 17 August 1798. I'm unable to find his final resting place. Their son, James Hale was born in 1777 in the parish of Godshill.

I would ideally love to find Mathew's parents but I'm coming up with nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Common Room / Sources - quoting source as TheShipsList website?
« on: Monday 13 January 14 11:08 GMT (UK)  »
Just wondering how most of you would source this website

http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/henrymoore1857.shtml

This is the first time I've sourced a website and I'm a little out of my depth. Is the below OK? I've generated it through the FTM2014. I don't like the 'discussion list' but that's the closest thing I could find.

TheShipsList, SA Passenger Lists, 1847 - 1866, records transcribed and submitted by Robert Janmaat from a variety of sources, TheShipsList, SA Passenger Lists, discussion list (http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/henrymoore1857.shtml).

Thanks,
Joanne

I hope I have posted this in the right place...if not admin please feel free to move.

I'm looking for any info on the deaths of Ruth Hale (nee Young) (d. approx. 1866) and her daughter Georgina who died shortly after the 1871 Channel Island Census. At the time of their deaths they were living at 20 Aquila Rd, St Helier, Jersey. They both worked at the British & Foreign School at St Helier.

I can't seem to find death certificates, cemetery records or newspaper death notices. Being open Brethren shouldn't make a difference to record keeping should it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Joanne
