The Common Room / Mc Stinson (?) Private School, Blackpool 1920
« on: Friday 05 April 24 14:49 BST (UK)  »
On the 1921 register, 79 Hornby Road, Blackpool, I have found an ancestor, (Jesse Hardacre, born 1897, Keighley), teaching at the Mc Stinson Private School, Blackpool. The name of the school may have been mis-transcribed but I can't find any school with this or similar name in Blackpool in the 1920s. He was a musician, so presumably taught music! Can anyone help find where this school might have been? I did wonder if it was the now Rossall Boarding School but the history is not conclusive.
Thank you for looking.

I have found a distant ancestor on the 1841 census in "The Retreat or Licensed Asylum for the cure of Insane Persons". The location is Wortley - Parish of Leeds. There are 16 patients, a superintendant, matron and 6 staff. This makes up the entire census so there are no clues as to the roads around the establishment to show where it is.

On the 1851 census it seems to have become "Castleton House Asylum", having the same superintendant, but Inmates are now referred to as "lunatics" rather than "patients" as in 1841, when it seems they were treated much more sympathetically. Looking at the census it seems to be in the Botany Bay area of Wortley.

I have tried google and can only find the "Retreat" in York - a Quaker establishment, created for the care of individuals with mental health issues. I assume that the two are connected but can find no records for the Leeds asylum or Castleton House.

I wondered if anyone could provide more details?

Thank You.

The Common Room / Lunatic Asylum and bigamous marriage. Help please!
« on: Thursday 27 July 23 11:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am researching the very complicated Cran/n family (I am one of them!) and have found a possible bigamous marriage. All the facts I have found point to this but I would like other opinions as to wether it is possible.
I have Joseph Cran - shoemaker - married to Hannah Taylor in 1828 - Leeds.
On the 1841 census she seems to be in the Lunatic Asylum - no records found for Joseph.
In1845 Joseph married Hannah Thompson (widow) in Manchester. Joseph had the same occupation and the same father, William, who was a cloth spinner which seems to prove this is the same person.
However, in 1851 Joseph is back with Hannah Taylor in Pudsey. Hannah Thompson is back in Manchester living with her mother and classed as "widow". It complicates matters that they are both Hannahs but helps that one is from Yorkshire and one from Manchester.
So... did Joseph enter into a bigamous marriage while his living wife was in an asylum then get "found out"
Is it possible that she could have been discharged from the asylum?
After Joseph's death she went on to marry Richard Robinson so whatever her problem was, it must have been solved.
I can't find any further records for Hannah Thompson but she droped the Cran name and reverted to her first married name.
Complicated! Any thoughts?

Armed Forces / Help finding a soldier in the Pioneer Corps please.
« on: Saturday 01 April 23 13:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am trying, with no success, to find military records, or any other information, about George Rule born about 1892. According to his marriage certificate to Margaret Burgess,1943, he was a Lance Corperal in the Pioneer Corps (Printer). The regiment number is unclear but looks like 13019383. His father was James Rule (Wood Turner), deceased. George was a widower but I have been unable to find a previous marriage. Address at time of marriage was Hevedon Road, Willesden, London. I believe he would have been born in London but he could have been Irish (as was Margaret) and that is a best guess! I can't find any conclusive records for him at all.
Any help would be much appreciated, thank you for looking.
Heather.

The Common Room / Union Row, Leeds. Where was it please?
« on: Wednesday 18 January 23 12:41 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me where exactly Union Row was in Leeds? I know it was in the Quarry Hill area so was eventually demolished but I can't find it on my old map of the late 19th century. I have ancestors who lived there around 1850 and would like to complete the picture. Thank you. Erica.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help deciphering date of birth please.
« on: Wednesday 15 June 22 14:08 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help with this date of birth please.
It is for Sarah Ann Cran who was baptised on 22nd October 1815.
Her parents James Cran and Mary Scruton (my 3 x grandparents) applied for a Marriage bond in October 1814 and I wondered if this might have been because Mary was pregnant at the time and they were in a hurry. If I could read the date of birth it would answer the question.
I am struggling to find a family for Mary Scruton so any help would be gratefully received.
Thank you for looking.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA match through an illegitimate child?
« on: Wednesday 05 May 21 15:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I have found a possible DNA match between myself and descendants of the illegitimate child of my (probable) 3 x great aunt on my father's side. The descendent would be my 4th cousin 2 x removed and results show 11cm/1 segments.

I am trying to conclusively find the family of my 2 x gr. grandmother -  so if I am correct this would be the illegitimate child of her sister. I am not sure if such a distant match can prove a connection? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Armed Forces / Trying to find a Gunner in the Royal Artillery 1860s
« on: Saturday 23 January 21 10:01 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching a distant ancestor, Charles Meecham (several variations on this name), who was a Gunner in the Royal Artillery. Service number 872, 10th Brigade. I think he was in Montreal in 1851 and in 1861 he was in Southsea Castle with his wife, Elizabeth Crann. In 1864 they baptised a child - John Meecham - in Athlone, Ireland, where I have discovered there was a barracks which would explain why they were there. After this I can find no more records, either of Charles or his son but his wife moved to Leeds shortly afterwards and had a family with someone else! She still called herself Meecham so I am presuming that Charles was still alive! I can't find a conclusive death for him although there is a possible death for John in 1865 in Liverpool.
I wondered if anyone could find out where the regiment went after Ireland so I can hopefully find out what happened?
Thank you for looking.
Erica.

The Common Room / Finding a wife - Auchterless, Aberdeenshire, 1735.
« on: Monday 09 November 20 14:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Is there any way I can find a wife for Robert Cran in Auchterless, Aberdeenshire around 1735?
I have found children: Jean born 1735, John 1737, Mary 1739, Elspet 1741 and Isobel 1743 but no mother is named.

I would also like to find the parents of Robert Cran and to prove whether or not he is the same person who married Bethea Donald in Glasgow in 1735. Transcribed as Craw but looks like Cran on the actual record.

I have just hit a brick wall with this person, who I think could possibly be the brother of my 5 x grandfather John Cran, but there is no evidence to back this up. Very frustrating!

Thank you for looking.
Erica.
