World War One / Sergeant Andrew Lewis 49108 Machine Gun Corps
« on: Friday 06 November 20 21:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I wonder if someone was able to assist me with some research. I have recently discovered my Great Great Uncle, Andrew Lewis was a Sergeant in the Machine Gun Corps, rol number 49108.

I have found his records but I have to admit, I’m not a military historian so much of it is lost on me ( I can do the very basic but more than that is over my head). I would appreciate anyone who can help me to sort through what happened to him and where he went and to put some meat on the bones so to speak.

Thank you in advance. Neil

Hi, could anyone help me with a quick Restoration please? You will see the break in the picture runs straight through my Great Great Aunt Girlie Forrest. The photo was taken in the 1930s

Really appreciate any assistance given. Neil.

Armed Forces / Napoleonic Wars, maybe slightly earlier
« on: Tuesday 30 April 19 21:13 BST (UK)  »
What I'm going to ask may seem a little vague but I thought I'd give it a go.

We have recently found out that there used to be a cache of letters in our family from a Mr Forrest (which is my ancestors surname). A distant relation knows where they were and where they went immediately after his Great Aunt, who had them, died.

He seems to recall that they had a military connection, possibly the Napoleonic Wars, possibly with a Derbyshire linked regiment.

One fragment of the letters does still exist, as an extract was used in a book about Derbyshire customs, written a number of years ago. Although this has nothing to do with the military, the story dates from the 1750s and concerns a naked boys race in the village of Whitwell, Derbyshire. The lady who wrote and compiled the book has long since passed.

Can anyone find anything about a man with the surname Forrest who could read and write with Derbyshire connections, from around the period I've said? I know it's a long shot, but any lead could help.

World War One / Herbert Johnson 3142(S) Royal Marine Medical Unit
« on: Sunday 11 November 18 18:22 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help?

My Great Grandfather was Herbert Johnson who lived in Creswell, Derbyshire. He served in the First World War in the Royal Marine Medical Unit. However, for some reason, I'm struggling to find his record on Ancestry. I know he was discharged to go and work at the local coal mine on 28th March 1917.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

World War One / Can anyone help identify this uniform?
« on: Wednesday 26 September 18 19:17 BST (UK)  »
I have been sent this photograph from a distant relative asking if I can identify him. I wondered if anyone recognises the uniform and can offer up any information to help.
Many thanks in advance.

Armed Forces / Coldstream Guards

Can anyone help?

My Great Grandfather was Frederick White, born around 1878 in Barlboroug, Derbyshire. He was the son of Charles White and Elizabeth Jane Rollinson. In his obituary of 1930, it states he was once in the Coldstream Guards, but we cannot get any information about this. I can only assume he was in the army before he married my Great Grandmother in 1902.

Can anyone assist with this at all or point me in the right direction?

World War One / James Forrest Lancs Fusiliers
« on: Wednesday 30 May 18 21:29 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help just help me put the final pieces of the jigsaw puzzle together of my Great Great Uncle, James Forrest. He joined up 2nd oct 1916 when he was 18yrs,3 months which I understand was under the legal age you could be sent abroad?

He seems to have 3 roll numbers, 62640, 183922, 32549 and was in he Royal Artillery and the Lancs Fus.

I also see he was a Gun, Junnes? and driver. He was also refused gunner due to being uneducated.

He was wounded twice, once by boyonet to the chest and later by a bullet in his leg. I can only find reference to the gun shot wound.

Can anyone just help me put everything together as I'm getting a bit bogged down?

Thank you.
