Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Is or was there a place named Desea?
« on: Friday 20 June 14 13:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi all rootschatters :o.

Researching my Surman family .I have his daughter down on 1911 census in London under her married name of Mortimer as follows:
Edward Mortimer aged 32 Farrier.
Mary Mortimer aged 32 born Desea India
along with their children.

Can anyone tell me if there was a district or place in India named DESEA or could it have been put down wrong on census..
previous census just show Mary as being born in India. All her siblings born Jersey channel Isles or England.

1901 she is married to Edward residing in St Helier
1891 she is living with her
Grandmother Ellen Donaghue again in St Helier and is aged 12 she is shown as born East Indies
Her father was Josiah Surman mother Margaret Donaghue.
Cannot find family in 1881 so presume they were out in India at that time.
They were back by 1885 when her younger sister Ellen Sophia Surman born in Woolwich 1885
In 1891 rest of the family are residing in Plumstead so looks like Josiahs time in India was only somewhere between
1874 ( he had a daughter born in Jersey Helena josephine surman in c1875) and 1885.
If anyone has any advice on how to go about tracing the familys time in India I would be grateful.
Josiah married Margaret Donaghue 1871 Farnham Surrey.
He was born 1838 Wokingham..
In 1911 he is shown as aged 73 living in New Romney Kent .His first wife has died ( he remarried 1893 to Charlotte Gerard. In this census he is shown as an army pensioner.
Any help re Desea or how to trace his time in India appreciated.
Thanks for taking the time to read this

Occupation Interests / Suffolk Police early 1900s - reasons for dismissal
« on: Tuesday 06 May 14 18:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi my gt grandad John William Rands was born Shotley Suffolk in 1881. He joined Lowestoft Police some time between 1901 and 1911.
There he met and married Lilian May Tills and they were married 1907.
By 1911 he was back in Shotley working as a farm horseman with his family.
He would never talk about the reasons why he was forced to resign from Lowestoft Police and the family only knew he left under a cloud.
Lilian was a single mum when he met her with a child Howard Tills and she may wellhave been of black ancestry.Would this be a reason for him to be dismissed/ forced to resign back then?
I am obviously hoping this could be the reason rather than he did something really bad!!!!
All his 3 sons took after Lilian so maybe this is why he would not say ( or maybe I am clutching at straws!!)
Hoping to go up to Lowestoft records soon to find out !!!
I have find my past but cannot find and suffolk police records on the site.Would Ancestry have the information if I joined ? Though I still intend going up there to take photos it would be great to fund out earlier!!

Family History Beginners Board / John Smith and a tale of two Newports.!
« on: Tuesday 06 May 14 13:43 BST (UK)  »
Started tracing back my gt gt grandfather John Francis Smith.
He and his family resided in Linthorpe Middlesbrough at various addresses from C1875 onwards.
He was a stocktaker of iron (and later steel) until in his 60s he became nightwatchman at the steelworks in Middlesbrough.
On census from 1891 onwards he is shown as being born Newport Monmouthshire c1850
However on 1881 census he is shown as being born in the county of essex and low and behold there is a village of Newport in Essex but so far I unable to trace John or his father Francis there.
However I have been unable to trace the family back in Newport Monmouthshire either!! The last trace I have is in 1872.
On 19th May 1872 John Francis Smith married Mary Jenkins at St Woolos Newport Monmouthshire.
The marriage cert states John was 22 and that his father was Francis Smith occupation stocktaker of iron.
Marys father is given as Hercules Jenkins butcher.
Witnesses all from Jenkins side
There is a Smith family shown in 1851 Census residing in Arkesden Essex( the parish Newport came under) and

Somerset Lookup Requests / cox family - advice needed.
« on: Tuesday 01 April 14 14:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi have been researching my cox family.Have i reached the end of the road?  Have maria cox in 1841 census in aberystruth .she is residing with the arble family who have quite a few lodgers.maria is shown as cock not coxand of no trade.also lodging there is william button. believe maria had travelled to aberystruth from somerset to marry william.they were married crickhowell 1841.i have traced william back to frome .his father was aaron button.on wedding cert marias father is named as james cox. having presumed maria came from frome also i have looked at records c1820/21 for her bapt.so far i have found a maria cox born 30.6.1819 bapt 5.8.1820at holy trinity frome.but there is also a maria cox bapt 8.12.1822 at westbury and guess what parents of both are james and mary cox!!! looking at records there are lots of james coxs. on the 1851 census maria is still living at aberystruth along with her daughter caroline button aged 8 and son charles aaron button aged 7.caroline was born in frome.marias husband william is in bromley middlesex (maria and children have joined him there in 1861 and they have had two more children. )in 1851 census maria is residing with john cox and his family at aberystruth.john is 6 years older than maria and could be her brother. he is married to martha. john gives his place of birth as rode somerset his wife martha gives her place of birth as milverton somerset. i have looked for john cox but after finding lots of john cox marrying lots of marthas all over somerset but not in rode!

My question as someone recent to family history do i assume the maria born in frome in 1819 is mine? Or should i keep trying to find john cox in rode and try and trace the cox family back that way.or is there not much likihood that i will ever be able to trace the cox family back further than maria.? Any advice appreciated.

Hi have been tracing by great grandad joseph hazel. he was born 1882 hartlepool durham and lived in middlesbrough. joseph was called up in 1916 when married men were enlisted. he was only in france a matter of days before being killed at contalmaison on the somme on 10th july 1916.he did make it through the main battle in the afternoon but was shot by a sniper in a tree while getting water. sadly though buried at the time by his friends he has no known grave but is on the memorial at middlesbrough and also on the thiepval memorial france. I have found his ref wo372/9 at national archives site and the ref for the battalions war diaries 9th battalion yorkshire reg wo95/2184/3. My query is that i know joseph was in the army (believed militia) prior to 1905 when he married elizabeth ellen bunn. i have two photos of him -one in his first world war uniform when he was in his 30s. . the other shows him as a young lad in uniform.could anyone tell me what regimentvetc he would likely to have been in and how old you had to be to join the army . he cannot have been in very long ashe was born in 1882 . Where would i find these earlier records - would they be at the national archives aldo? Ad i am going up to london shortly i want to make sure i get all info i can at same time! Any help on where to start re looking for josephs earlier service most appreciated
