Calder/Oman Family Wick
I am descended from Alexander Calder from Wick who married Anne Oman in 1849 and had a son William Peter Calder in 1853 in Pulteney Town. Alexander was a sailmaker at the time. Does anyone have any further information on these families ?

I would like to get in touch with Wendy about this family.
If you are still searching Wendy will you send me a PM.

Fife / Most unusual IGI entry for Fife
« on: Friday 05 May 06 23:38 BST (UK)  »
I have just discovered my most unusual mis-transcription yet in the IGI submitted entries.

While looking for My Jean Brown I came across this:

Jane Smith BROWN
Submission Search: 2049282-0302105124824

Birth/Christening: 10 May 1846 Dumberline, Fish Fire, Scotland    ???  ???  ???
I must admit it took several minutes for the penny to drop!! :)  :)
Was it to do with fishing? NO  it was a place!

Hi all Chatters

I'm looking for living family of the above lady who was born in Forfar in 1896.
She was Matron of the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow for many years retiring in 1956.
I know she had family who remained in Forfar and I would like to get in touch with any relatives.
If anyone can put me in touch please PM me.

Could someone please oblige a poor Scot who lost a relative across the border???

William Roan  b 1835/36 in Kirkcudbrightshire married Elizabeth Lavinia Hobday in 1864. They lived in Birmingham where he was a commercial traveller.
Could anyone find him for me on the 1871 census as he is my only search south of the border. Everyone else stayed at home !

Technical Help / Can't find old e-mails?
« on: Tuesday 21 February 06 10:21 GMT (UK)  »
Suggestions please

My computer failed  - between one e-mail and the next - Power supply failure which trashed the mother board.
I have installed the old HDD as a slave drive in the new machine and transferred everything over except my old e-mails and address book (Don't chastise me with 'We told you to back everything up!!!) These were the only bits I had not copied.

The question is :- where do I find the files with my old e-mails both incoming and sent items on the old hard drive??
I use Windows XP Home with Outlook Express /NTL {Broadband} as ISP.

As a safety precaution while I was transferring stuff I saved it to my trusty memory stick so that if anything went wrong it was not lost.

I intend using my old drive as a dedicated genealogy store for all my FTM files; documents and certificates. That way it should be neatly packaged in future ready for weekly back-ups.

All hints greatly appreciated1

Family History Beginners Board / Gathering recent family information
« on: Monday 06 February 06 00:08 GMT (UK)  »
When my wife and I started gathering family history we realised that there was a lot of more recent information which could only come from living family members so we invited all her side of the family to a re-union and asked them to bring old photographs  and think back to shared family stories.
We arranged a private function suite for dinner and chat afterwards (being a Scot I had sounded people out first about sharing costs!!)
They arrived with bags of stuff and from the outset there were groups forming and sharing, then breaking up and moving round. Lots of hilarity. The poor staff didn't know what had hit them until they relaxed too.
From it I got lots of stories, a family bible  most didn't know about, some proper names instead of pet names and a surprising amount of chronology - what happened when stuff.
Didn't cost much. Was a lovely meal which relaxed everyone and they all enjoyed it. We all now have a CD of the pictures that were taken...... Now! how do I put that into Family Tree Maker?

Ayrshire / Family of William Blain
« on: Thursday 19 January 06 19:49 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to track forward to find the family of:
William Blain from Dailly who married Mary McDonald Muir 30/12/1920 in Ayr.

Mary Muir was the daughter of William Muir & Margaret Currie from Ayr.

I don't know where they went after their marriage but somebody out there must know!

The Lighter Side / How your ancestors lived
« on: Friday 06 January 06 16:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everybody

I have just re-read a book which gives masses of information about how our ancestors lived between about 1820 -1950s. Has lots of fascinating information about farming, blacksmithing, life generally in a mainly agricultural community. Although relating to East Anglia much of covers the whole rural picture. Nothing much about domestic life though!

Its probably long out of print but might still be available in secondhand shops:
"Where Beards Wag All" by George Ewart Evans published in 1970 by Faber & Faber Ltd ISBN 0 571 08411 7.

At the expense of missing one, or even two, nights on RootsChat if you come across it have a read.
There are several other books by the same author on related history.
