Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Missing marriage in Southampton?
« on: Saturday 10 January 15 22:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I hope someone can help with this mystery...
John Clark born 1839 Clunie, Perthshire, Scotland married Mary Green in 1867, Tarrant Hinton, Dorset. He was living in Southampton at the time and was a widower. I've found him living in St Saviours, Southwark, Christchurch in 1861 and he's single.

How can I find who his first wife was without ordering hundreds of certificates from both places? It's thought he was sent to Southampton around 1865.

Any help or advice would be great.

Many thanks

Lanarkshire / Irish or Scottish marriage conundrum
« on: Saturday 10 January 15 21:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I've come across an a couple who were born Maryhill, Barony, Lanarkshire along with their siblings but their parents were (all 4) born in Ireland.

John McLachlan (born 1856) married Catherine Buchanan (born 1856) around 1874
James McKay (born 1861) married Margaret Horner possibly Homer (born 1859) around 1882

Any help finding these marriages or going a step further back would be hugely appreciated.

World War Two / Catherine Spillane WW2 evacuations
« on: Saturday 10 January 15 16:31 GMT (UK)  »
Catherine Spillane lived at 1a Queens Gate, South Kensington in 1932. She had a daughter called Margaret Jeanette Spillane on 14 July 1933. Margaret was evacuated from London around 1939-1940. She never returned to London or saw her mother again. Are there any lists or files of the children evacuated in WW2 please?

I don't know anything about Catherine apart from and she was a domestic parlourmaid and no name for father on birth certificate.

How can I find out what happened to her mother and if she died in the bombing or abandoned her child?

Many thanks

Hi

This site is fantastic when I'm stuck and hope someone can help again...

Samuel McNabb married Mary Ann Calderwood/Kirwood (these seem to be the same name) 1855 in Ballymoney. I want to request this document and also look at Northern Ireland census and his baptism which would be around 1835. How can I do this please as really want to get back another generation.

Many thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Scotland marriage mystery
« on: Tuesday 02 December 14 20:17 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find anything on Mary McLaughlin born 1923 in Glasgow (I think) and married Edwin Sydney Mark at Maryhill (?) on 25 December 1947. They then moved to Croydon. I think I will need to order a certificate but can't even find confirmation on Ancestry.

I've never tried to research Scotland ancestry so any ideas/help would be fantastic.

Many thanks

Armed Forces / The first regiment of foot guards
« on: Tuesday 02 December 14 11:05 GMT (UK)  »
I hope someone will be able to help...

Joseph Gater born abt 1735 was married to Ann Chapman (widower) on 25 June 1751 at Saint Johns Westminster. He was in the first regiment of foot guards.

Katherine Gater was baptised 18 February 1753 mother Eleanor and father Joseph Gater of the first regiment of guards.

Is it possible this is the same Joseph and his wife was called Ann Eleanor?  Where would military records for 1750's be held if they survive? I don't know what her maiden name was so how can I check?

Thanks

London and Middlesex / St Mary, Whitechapel 1771
« on: Monday 15 September 14 22:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Does anyone know where R.M Lane was please? I've found a baptism for Charles Bush 1771, son of Charles and Mary, R.M Lane in Whitechapel. It was either a very big or overcrowded lane as loads of people were born there. Was it a workhouse? Could it stand for Rosemary...? I've found a marriage at St Katherine by the Tower for his parents but my research has ground to a halt. Any help/advice would be amazing at this stage. He joined the army but how do I find out what happened to his parents?

Armed Forces / James Bush after battle of Savastopol - Navy

Help needed please by any expert regarding the end of the Crimea war please. Need to understand the situation with deserters and where certain ships were in November 1855. I have a "run" date but where was the ship? Is it possible James Bush actually died. Why run at the end of the war? He served on HMS Oberon.

I've read about the war and it sounds terrible but to run at the end and not get a medal sounds crazy.
