Would appreciate any help/views on the attached 1871 Dalkeith Census record.  Record number 11 (Peter Cairney) where born is unrecognisable (looks like Africa) but it wasn't.    Similarly record number 3 is also indistinguishable to me (looks like Audia) but I doubt it....

Hello, can anyone translate the attached Catholic Marriage Register entry, which I presume is in Latin...  If it helps, the names are Peter Kearnay (Cairney) & Henrietta Gibson, December 1850, at Portobello Edinburgh...Thanks in advance.

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / 1911 Scottish Census - look-up? please for Haddington
« on: Saturday 27 September 14 22:47 BST (UK)  »
Is it possible to search the 1911 census by address, if so, could a kind person see who was living at Smiths Close, Nungate, Haddington.  Interested to see if a Miss Gallagher who was present there in 1916, was there in 1911, if so with whom.  Any assistance really appreciated :)

Scotland / **COMPLETED** Lookup at Scottish People Centre
« on: Wednesday 16 April 14 21:42 BST (UK)  »
If anyone is going to SPC and could undertake a look up I would be extremely grateful.

I'm still trying to track any children of Peter Cairnie and Isabella McKenzie Reid between 1911 and 1925 in Dalkeith.

Unfortunately, as I understand it, one can only look for children, where only the parents names are known, by attending a SP site (and being based in London, I haven't been able to track one down).  I don't know though, what is involved in looking through the indexes for 1911 through 1924 or just how much work this entails.

Peter & Isabella married in Dalkeith on 5th July 1912.  They had a daughter Jean Haldane Reid Cairnie in Dalkeith 10 March 1925 (died 16 Feb 1996) but it seems a long time between marriage in 1912 and a first child in 1925.  Appreciate WW1 intervened, and am aware Peter fought with the ANZAC forces at Gallipoli, when he signed up on arrival in Oz in 1914, but that still leaves a big gap.

Any assistance appreciated.

One potential birth in Dalkeith is Robert McGill Cairnie born 1912 (Gros Data 683/00 0186) died Dalkeith 1918 (Gros Data 683/00 0012), but am unable to access parent details at SP on-line.

Would appreciate any help and assistance anyone can offer, thank you  ;)

Lanarkshire / Confused with 1750-1800 OBP Marriage / Birth records for Gorbals.
« on: Thursday 27 March 14 10:58 GMT (UK)  »
Am a bit new to this, so please accept my apologies if I am making fundamental mistakes.
Am researching William Campbell and have found a marriage to Janet Hart on 14 March 1800 Gorbals.  The OPR certificate just states "William Campbell an Janet Hart both of this parish, married by the Rev James McLean 14 March 1800". No parents, witness names, addresses, or ages etc..

Have also found two births for Janet Hart 16 Nov 1777 and 4 Jun 1780 to Archibald Hart/Mary Anderson, Gorbals.  Both OPR certificates state "Archibald Hart, weaver, in Gorbals had a daughter Bxxx (bought?) forth by his wife Mary Anderson upon the 31st and baptised the 4 June named Janet". The other birth certificate has the same level of information.  I assume the Janet 16 Nov 1777 died, although no death/burial record can be found.

The questions/queries I have are:-
1). Will there be other records that have additional information to the OPR certificates?
2). How can I be sure that the two births are really from the same parents and not two different couples with the same name?
3). Without a death, how do I know which of the births is the one that married William Campbell?
4). How can I be sure that the William Campbell/Janet Hart I am looking for, are this couple as there are no parent names etc. on the OPR certificate/record?

Any assistance is appreciated - and when one gets to the 1700/1800 is this the norm for the level of information available, if so how does one go back further, with probably less clarity from official documents, without getting the wrong ancestors? >:(
Thanks in advance for views  :)

Scotland / Two registrations of the same birth
« on: Tuesday 25 February 14 00:50 GMT (UK)  »
I have come across the birth (10 March 1925) registration of a 'Joan Haldane Reid Cairnie' which is registered twice.  One record is showing as No 43 in the Parish of Dalkeith on 24 March 1925. The other record No 54 in the Parish of Lasswade, also on 24 March 1925.
Any views/clues why this can be  ???
Thanks

Scotland / Searching for children - Scotland
« on: Friday 14 February 14 23:59 GMT (UK)  »
Usually I'm working backwards from children to parents, but now I am at a point of moving from parent to children.  On 'Scotlands People' there is no index to enter a surname and add the parents names to find any children.  Anyone any ideas how to locate children from parent details from 1920 up to date?   :)
