Other Countries / Jamaica: Sarah Stoakes Harris (1758-?) and Peter Wallace (1755-1782)
« on: Saturday 03 October 15 13:08 BST (UK)  »
Trying to piece together the origins of this pair, over 250 of whose descendants I've traced to date.

Sarah Stoakes Harris was baptised 6 December 1758 at Kingston, daughter of Thomas Stoakes Harris (1729-1792) and his wife Deborah. Who was she? It looks as if Thomas was the child of a previous Thomas Stoakes Harris (-1775) and his wife Frances. Who were they?

About 1777, date and place unknown, Sarah married Peter Wallace, parents unknown. After his early death in or near Kingston, she went to England. Whether she remarried and when and where she died are so far unknown.

Any ideas anyone?

He gave his date of birth as 18 March 1776 in the parish of St George, Middlesex. The trouble is that there were then four parishes of that name: (a) St George, Hanover Square (b) St George the Martyr, Holborn, (c) St George, Bloomsbury, and (d) St George in the East, Stepney.

His father might have been William Stockley (abt 1754-1823), who married Sarah Tubb on 27 January 1775 in Old Basing, Hampshire.

Any clues? (If anybody's interested, I've identified 708 of his descendants.)

Europe / Holstein: Frederik Christian von Meley (1749-1814)
« on: Thursday 20 February 14 17:18 GMT (UK)  »
Can anybody help with the origins of Major Frederik Christian von Meley?

Born about 1749 in Holstein, maybe in or near Flensburg, he went to the Danish West Indies, working as a customs officer and surveyor, and died at the age of 64 on 19 Feb 1814 in Christiansted on the island of St Croix.

His first marriage in about 1775 to Anna Elisabeth Leenhardt produced five daughters, who all married and all left children, so he has numerous descendants today.
