Australia / Hatfield bushrangers, members
« on: Saturday 14 July 12 01:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I am researching the Hatfield bushrangers for a little project of mine.
Not a well know group of bushrangers and their life as bushrangers was only short lived. (4 days  ;D )
I have a lot of details from Trove newspaper site, lots.

Hatfield, NSW, between Balranald and Ivanhoe.
Year - 1879

What I need is a bit more background on the men.

- Thomas Gorman b.c. 1858 stockman (likely ring leader) -21 years hard labour
- charles Jones, b.c. 1858, stockman from Qld. - 14 years hard labour
- William Kaye, b.c. 1860 , stockman local to Hatfield, NSW - 10 years hard labour
- William Hobbs, b.c. 1846, ex- sailor, deformed arm and leg. cook at Hatfield, - 14 years hard labour.

I know what sentences they got but do not know which gaol they ended up in.  The trial was at Deniliquin.
If I can find out where they were born, when they died, if they ever married it will help ad to my files and background details.

thanks in advance
Margaret

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / marriage look up
« on: Tuesday 05 June 12 09:48 BST (UK)  »
Could someone please find this marriage for me and verify the date.
Joseph Simpson to Margaret Overend - 20th September 1847 - this date was on their daughters birth certificate, but I cannot find it in the IGI (changed format is not making searching easy)
I cannot find the marriage in Kildwick p.r's where Joseph was from, but since most marriages occurred in the parish of the bride it could be in Sutton.

Would love it if someone has parish registers of this marriage or even can find them in the IGI.
Thankyou.

Australia / 2 X David SIMPSON
« on: Friday 11 May 12 00:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
hope you can help me with a dilemma. Not sure but think I might be dealing with 2 fellows of the same name, David Simpson.
I have included ALL the details I have on him so you know where I stand.  It is the various charges that are of concern. We were led to believe that there may have been two David Simpsons in the area. However, both blacksmiths?  Extreme coincidence.
Any help in sorting this out would be really appreciated. Must finish my book.  ;D

DAVID SIMPSON

1831 - David Simpson born 15th July 1831, Kildwick, Yorkshire.
Bp. 28 June 1837, Ickornshaw, Yorkshire.
Parents – John Simpson and Elizabeth Whitaker.
1841 – Census, home with parents in Kildwick
1851 – Census, home with parents in Kildwick
1852 - Married – 1. Ellen Robinson in 1852, Kildwick
Issue – 1. Henry Simpson Robinson,               b. 1850, d. 1851 (middle name – assumption)
              2. Sarah Elizabeth Simpson,                b. 1852, married John Guy in 1871
              3. Alice Simpson,                                   b. 1854,(2nd July) d. Possible only – in 1856.
1853 – Possible conviction – 27th June 1853. Larceny, 2 months imprisonment, trial – Skipton W. Yks.
*This could be a different David Simpson.
David to Australia
Possible shipping choices: Taken from Public Record Office, Vic, Unassisted indexes.
1854 - Champion of the Seas - Dec. 1854 – age 24 – Found this one in the State Library, not a great deal of extra information.  The extra info just stated: David Simpson, age 24, labourer.  Directly beneath his name is Jos Simpson, age 21, labourer.  (*note, our Joseph Simpson was born in 1819)
Further on, on a different page, there is a Thos Simpson, age 30, cabinet maker, and a Rd or Ro Simpson, age 27, also a cabinet maker.  The age looks good for David but not for Joseph.  I think we can disregard the cabinet makers as all our Simpson boys were blacksmiths.
1855 – James Baines – Feb 1855 – just states Adult no actual age given. This fiche was missing from the state library when I looked for it, typical, I have not followed up on this as yet, the PRO is very difficult to get to.
1859 – Mentioned in Pastoral Times, Joseph Simpson states his brother David will be looking after his      blacksmith business while he is away.  Deniliquin.
1865 – Numerous articles in police gazettes. (Sorry, may not be in exact order)
David Simpson (and Mary Anne Simpson/Anston) charged with stealing wearing apparel.  Arrested at Forbes – trial at Bathurst. Tried Oct 1865, 18months jail.

*David Simpson charged with receiving stolen property, states he is a blacksmith and from Yorkshire, states he was born in 1830 and the ship he arrived on was the Champion of the Seas. His description is given as thus:
5ft 6or 7 inches high, stout build, fair complexion, brown hair, worn long and curly, light sandy beard and moustache.
David Simpson charged with stealing a horse. Arrested at Forbes, discharged.
David Simpson charged with stealing a pair of trousers, arrested at Forbes (6 months at Bathurst gaol).
David Simpson (and Mary Ann Simpson) for stealing under clothes, arrested at Forbes, committed to trial at Orange Quarter sessions.
1869  -  David Simpson charged on warrant with disobeying a summons for selling spirits without a    licence. Arrested at Balranald, remanded at Hay.  Age 36, Blacksmith, description as thus:
Same descript given as earlier, but mentions clothing as thus: dressed in light tweed coat and tweed trousers strapped with black cloth, a blacksmith.

1871 -   David Simpson, vagrancy, tried at Balranald P. C. On the 5th June 1871, states born England, occupation blacksmith.  He was goaled at Deniliquin.  States he arrived on ship Champion of the Seas in 1854 and gives his year of birth as 1842. (Even though the age is wrong in this, I feel it may be a misprint as same details are given in the 1865 police gazzette* and age is different.
David Simpson charged with being a rogue and vagabond.
1874 – David is in Wilcannia and has set up a Blacksmith shop. Numerous articles or docs to verify this.
1875 - Married – 2.  David marries Elizabeth Ferrier. (Have marriage certificate.)
Issue from this marriage – 1. John Simpson, b. 1876, married Elizabeth Neeson in 1900.  (Have certificates)
1901 – David Simpson dies on the 27th June 1901 in Wilcannia, NSW. Blacksmith. (Have certificate     and write up in paper on his death)

Australia / Jeremiah GREENY
« on: Monday 26 March 12 03:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks,
I am trying to find out a bit more about a fellow called Jeremiah Greeny.
He was mentioned in a newsarticle where he had abused and insulted Margaret Simpson wife of Joseph simpson. (1869- Deniliquin)
Joseph at the time owned The Supreme Court Hotel in Deni and the next day this same fellow came into the hotel and Joseph kicked him out because of the way he had treated his wife.  Jeremiah took him to court for assault and Joseph pleaded guilty.

I have since found out that his same fellow went missing in 1875, drunk and drowned.

I am hoping to find out more about him to include in more story, a bit of background info.  Thought I had a contact but the email bounced back at me.  :(

possible marriage Geremiah Greeny to Elizabeth Donaldson in 1861.

Any help would be appreciated.
thanks in advance.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Otley parish records
« on: Monday 05 March 12 08:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hope someone can help me.
I have been given information that a John Whitaker married a Hannah Silson on 27th feb 1837 at Otley.
This information is on Familysearches - IGI.
Does anyone have the original parish records which might show the parents of John Whitaker.  My John Whitaker's father was John Simpson, blacksmith.  John Whitaker would also have been a blacksmith.

Also, if someone has these parish records, it has been said to me that the above Hannah died in October 1840.
Can anyone verify these two records for me.
Her death appears in the freeBDM index as the same.

thankyou

Occupation Interests / newspaper journalists -1850's
« on: Thursday 09 February 12 06:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
just wondering. In the 1850's writing was done with pen and ink.
I have a lot of newsarticles that were produced from court room cases.
How would a journalist have scribbled down his notes to take back and put in the paper, I would imagine pencils (grey lead) would have been used but not exactly sure.

any advice welcome.

Occupation Interests / well digging - water- Australia
« on: Tuesday 22 November 11 09:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
not sure where to put this, but I have an ancestor digging a well for water in 1865, Deniliquin, Australia.
Any ideas as to what would have been involved?

I have done some googling and got some basic stuff, ie bucket, tripod, rope etc.
He was a blacksmith by trade, would he have had a special implement for the digging - ie hand auger.
What would they have lined the well with, if anything?

The info I have and wish to build up on is this - from Pastoral Times - june 1865

Accident - As Joseph Simpson junior was engaged in deepening a well in Deniliquin the other day the rope attached to a bucket of mullock gave way, and the bucket fell some  twenty feet on to the poor fellow's back.  His uncle in going down to his assistance inadvertently made matters worse by his weight again breaking the rope when he was near the bottom, and he fell on to is nephew.  Fortunately a broken rib was the worst injury sustained by young Joe, whilst the uncle happily escaped unhurt.

As you can see, a fun story to add to my book but just want more info so I know what I am talking about.

Any help welcome,
cheers

Hi all,
I am nearing the end of my story on my family history and  have been looking at printers online and most seem to want to do the covers themselves, design, layout etc.

As an artist, and having an image painted already, I wish to do it myself.  Not only for self satisfaction  ::) but it will also save on costs.

However, they seem to stipulate about mock-ups, and spines and back covers, and a whole lot of technical stuff.
I am having the book done in A5 size, but have no idea where to go from here.

Does anyone know of a specific program or layout that I can use to play with this design so I can present it in a professional manner.
I do have photoshop.

kind regards
Margaret
