Angus (Forfarshire) / Alexander Milne 1786 - 1860
« on: Tuesday 11 August 20 15:30 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone researching Alexander Milne b. Forfar/Kirriemuir  abt 1786 He moved to Newcastle around 1834 where he lived and worked as a Cordwainer till his death in 1860. He married Mary Ann Owen, they had 3 children James 1830, Thomas 1833 and Charles 1836.
Everything I thought I knew about my 3xG-Grandfather`s family in Forfar has been wiped out by DNA evidence.
I do know now that he is NOT the son of Alexander Milne 1761 - 1821 and his wife Isabel Brown. This has been borne out by DNA results from the descendants of those who were thought to be his siblings.
There is an entry in Scotlands People of 3/12/1786 of "Alexr. Milne of Kirriemuir had a son baptised Alexander" but I seem to be hitting a stone wall beyond that.

Would anyone like to have a go at giving an approximate year.

The photo is from my family collection but gives no details, only that it is copyright of Newcastle Chronicle.  Getting somewhere close may help me identify the couple,

The Common Room / births not registered
« on: Wednesday 19 September 18 15:48 BST (UK)  »
I have two ancestors who according to census records were born in Edinburgh 1830 and 1833. I can find no trace of either birth being registered in Scotland.
The youngest one (1833) shows up being baptized in Newcastle upon Tyne aged two and a half in 1836. At first I thought that their father may have registered them in Forfar Angus were the family originated but no trace there.
I was wondering what circumstances could have stopped the births being registered.
Any theories would be welcome.

Family name Milne
Father Alexander 1786 - aft 1851
Son James 1830 - 1884

Durham / Fighting Cocks - Bishop Auckland
« on: Tuesday 10 July 18 11:10 BST (UK)  »
Bit of a long shot but does anyone know where in Bishop Auckland was the "Fighting Cocks". My 5xGGrandfather John Garthwaite was the innkeeper there in the 1760s and left in 1768 and moved to the "Bush Inn" Carlisle.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / abreviation on baptism
« on: Tuesday 12 June 18 11:53 BST (UK)  »
While looking for a birth of Robert Clerk/Clark in 1729 I found the attached baptism.
Apr 6th "Roh Clerk husband to Helen Straton". Unsure as to whether it is "Rott" or "RoH".

Can anyone decipher and what does it mean.

Thanks

The Common Room / is this marriage void
« on: Sunday 11 February 18 13:10 GMT (UK)  »
I have found that my Gt Grandfather deliberately gave false information to get married. He gave his age as 21 but was in fact 17. Could this render the marriage void?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / A real challenge
« on: Sunday 28 August 16 18:05 BST (UK)  »
I have an old family photo of a wedding group, the photo is in reasonable condition. However I am sure there is a faded message on the reverse which may give answers to the identities of the group.
Can anyone please help in trying to retrieve the lost text.
I know it is going to be very difficult.

Many Thanks in advance

Arthur

Like many people I have a lot of old photos of people I do not recognise. Those photos I do recognise are much older in years, so is there any software (reasonably priced) that I can use to see if any of the younger are in fact those older people.

Hope this makes sense
see the examples

Thanks

Arthur Milne
