Travelling People / Esau & Henty Smith of the Black Patch & the Charlie Chaplin mystery
« on: Wednesday 22 February 12 16:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

I think most of you with links to the Black Patch will have heard the Charlie Chaplin story by now. If not there's plenty online.

I have recently made a connection between Absolom Smith king of the Gypsies who died at Twyford, Leicestershire in 1826 (who was a brother of Jasper)
linking them to & Esau & Henty King & Queen of the Black Patch.

This is thanks to another researcher. Anyway this alleged link to Chaplin is through is mother Hannah Hill (also noted online as Hannah Smith Hill) it's says that Hannah Hill was descended from Romany roots.

Try as I might I cannot make any connection with Chaplin's mother or Grandmother. One website suggests the connection is through his Great Grandmother.

Elsewhere another site goes as far to suggest that Esau might be Chaplin's Grandfather.

Has anyone delved into this? also I could do with an accurate list of Esau & Henty's Children/Grandchildren etc if anyone has such a list.

Thank you

Travelling People / Help with trying to connect two Smith Families
« on: Thursday 16 February 12 13:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

I am trying to establish any possible link between two groups of Smith Families.

I am linked with Absolom Smith born c1750/1768 North Marston, Bucks, who was a sibling of Fido & Jasper.

Absolom Smith was buried aged 60 at Twyford, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire in 1826, there is quite a bit on the net about him, he was known as the "King of the Gypsies"

Absolom married Elizabeth Jones in Hillmorton, Warwickshire in 1813, I think this was his 2nd marriage (1st to Mary)

I am trying to find some link between Absolom Smith & another man by the name of Esau Smith who was also known as the "King of the Gypsies" he married Cinamenta  (Henty) & they lived on the Black Patch at Smethwick.

If I am correct it's something to do with Woodfine Smith & I think that Hillmorton is the key, but try as I might I cannot grasp a connection.

Hope someone knows.

Regards

Eddie

Hello

If anyone has access to the 1891 for Northamptonshire, please could you have a look for a James Pollard. I am not sure if he was married in 1891 if so his wife's christian name would be Elizabeth.

I suspect the area to be Deene. Any other family data would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance

Eddie

Completed Census Requests / Horse Fair, Wolverhampton In 1851
« on: Thursday 13 October 05 15:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

Could someone please tell me where Horse Fair can be found in the 1851 Census of Staffordshire (Wolverhampton)  I understand that it used to be where Wulfruna Street now stands.

This of course is around the corner from St Peter's Colleigate Church you would therefore assume that Horse Fair would be found under St Peter's, however I have trawled through what I think is the full extent of St Peter's Parish but cannot see any reference to Horse Fair ?

Hope someone can point me in the right direction

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / 1851 Staffordshire (Bilston) ELLIS Look up Request
« on: Thursday 22 September 05 05:58 BST (UK)  »
Hello All

I am quite new to Roots & have placed this request two times previously with out a response but it appears I posted it in the wrong place, so hopefully third time lucky !

I would appreciate it very much if someone could take a look at the Staffs 1851 for Joseph Ellis, possibly in Bilston.  I have him in Shrewsbury aged 12 in the 1841.

I then jump to 1861 & find him at Brook Street, Bilston married to Martha, I have found a likely marriage in 1852.  So if you see him in the 1851 it will probably read as JOSEPH ELLIS AGED 22 SINGLE born Shrewsbury.

I am very keen to see if his father "John or stepmother "Elizabeth appear in the house.  I have all three of them in one property in Shrewsbury in 1841 but by 1851 they all vanish from Shrewsbury.

Hoping that someone can help.

Somerset Completed Lookup Requests / Where is or where was Broadway in Frome ?
« on: Monday 19 September 05 08:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello

My family are traceable in Shropshire for a least 60+ years between 1819 & 1881.  Then for some reason they show up living in Frome in the census of 1891.

Then in 1901 they are back in Shropshire, I have never worked out why, maybe it was work, they were butchers.

If anyone can tell me if Broadway exists today or where it was that would be great.

Many thanks

Completed Census Requests / 1851 Look up Request (2nd Request)
« on: Monday 19 September 05 08:36 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I posted this message a few days ago unfortunately I have not a had a reply,

Could someone please consult the Staffs census of  1851,  I am looking for Joseph Ellis he would be aged about 22 born in Shrewsbury.

I have him in 1841 aged 12 in Shrewsbury, then 1861 aged 32 married to Martha living at 27  Brook St, Bilston.

I am very keen to find him in 1851 as his father John & Step mother Elizabeth all vanish from Shrewsbury by the 1861 census, I found a likely marriage in 1852, so he should appear as single in the 1851.  It would be even better if he is with his father or mother.

Hope someone can help.

Regards

Eddie
