Aberdeenshire / Meaning of cousin late 1800's in Aberdeen
« on: Thursday 26 March 20 01:40 GMT (UK)  »
Have copies of letters written late 1800's referring to "my cousin" and "your cousin" to/from child/youth-hood friends. Both educated Peterhead/Longside area.
Would the term cousin mean only your parents siblings children ,or, also include your parents cousins children ie. second cousins.
Thanks

Aberdeenshire / Alexander Hay. Cannot find parents
« on: Sunday 21 May 17 08:05 BST (UK)  »
Have had trouble finding parents of my Alex Hay Ch. 23/12/1840, at Aberdeen. He married Marjory Bruce and had Marjory ( re-named Jane) and Alexander.
The most likely parents are listed below:     Alexander Hay was christened at Old Machar Parish on 17.8.1811. Parents were Adam Hay and Jean Milne married 25.4.1809 at New Machar and Peterhead. Known siblings were Charles Stephen (ch. 18.4.1813), Elizabeth (ch. 30.7.1814) and Adam (ch. 7.3.1823). Adam Jnr would have been aged 15 when Marjory was christened and age 18 for the 1841 census. Adam Hay (senior) was possibly ch.5 or 25.4.1786 at Glenbucket, Aberdeen- parents being Adam Hay and Elizabeth Ogg. Adam Snr or Jnr could have been the witness for the christening of Margory (Jane/Jean). On balance, this may be our Family.
Any help?

Aberdeenshire / Mary Kemlo Cruickshank Gorrod (Hay connection)
« on: Thursday 02 January 14 02:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I am chasing the Hay family connection to Mary. She married James Hay Petrie in 1917 and had a son and daughter. My Australian Hay grandparents went to Scotland in the 60's and visited the son and daughter.
I am trying to find parents of James Hay Petrie- family remember mother as being Mary Hay and father as unknown Petrie.
My problem is hitting a brick-wall finding parents of Alexander Hay born circa 1810 who married Marjory Bruce in 1836. There is a family connection to Mary Kemlo Cruickshank Gorrod, but I cannot find it.
Any assistance is welcomed.

If I may ask a  second request: was it unusual to christen your daughter as "Marjory" then 3 years later in the 1841 census call her Jean, the 1851 census names her as Jane and she was married as Jane. Last question: Should I trust the ages given in the 1841 census? Alexander Hay and Marjory Bruce are listed as 30 years. Marjory should be 25 years according to instructions to lower age to closest 5 years. Neighbours in Love Lane have no age recorded.
Thanks
Gary

Aberdeenshire Lookup Requests / Alexander Hay of Love Lane Spital-death
« on: Wednesday 28 November 12 06:16 GMT (UK)  »
Alexander and Marjory Hay and 2 children are listed at this address in 1841 census. She married James Ross in 1846.
Looking for Alexanders' death records.
He was a mason/spirit dealer aged about 30 at death.
Possibles include St Peters Churchyard 16/3/1842, 20/12/1843 and 9/3/1844. To assist, he was not 2/9/1844 St. Nicholas Churchyard.
Thanks in advance.

Aberdeenshire / Red Lion Inn, Love Lane , Spital
« on: Wednesday 28 November 12 05:51 GMT (UK)  »
First time Red Lion found is 1856/57 and continued each year until 1864/65 when the Aberdeen Post Directory has Red Lion at 8 West North St- Love Lane site not mentioned.
My GGG parents, Alexander and Marjory Hay are listed in 1841 Census as living at Love Lane. Census states he was a mason.
However, Post Directory starting 1840/41lists him as spirit dealer. He died 1841-1846 as she married James Ross in 1846.
From 1844/45 until 1863/64, Mrs Hay/Mrs.Ross and James Ross were at the address as spirit dealers or as Red Lion.
Any more information appreciated.

Aberdeenshire Lookup Requests / Alexander Hay-MI look-up and death record
« on: Monday 15 December 08 03:43 GMT (UK)  »
Alexander Hay was a mason aged 30 for 1841 census and married to Marjory.
She re-married to James Ross 28.5.1846 at Old Machar. So I am assuming Alexander died after census and before she re-married.
1. Can anyone find his date of death?
2. An Alexander Hay died 8 Jun 1845 and was buried at Fyvie. Is there more detail on the headstone?
Thanking you in advance
Gary

Aberdeenshire / Alexander Hay born circa 1811
« on: Wednesday 28 December 05 06:35 GMT (UK)  »
Can any-one help? I have hit a "brick-wall". I am attempting to find parents of Alexander Hay.

Alexander Hay married Marjory Bruce 29.10.1836 @ St Nicholas Aberdeen.
Two children were christenened @St Nicholas -Marjory 5.10.1838 and Alexander 23.12.1840.

The 1841 census shows Alexander (age 30) born Aberdeenshire, mason, Marjory age 30, George age 10, Jean age 5 and Alexander 5months living @ Love Lane Spittal Old Machar.
George may have been from a previous marriage to  Grace Farquhar.
Jean is most likely Jane who was possibly christened Marjory.
Alexander senior died after the census as Marjory (senior) married James Ross on 28.5.1846.

I have found the following Alexander Hay's born circa 1810 Aberdeenshire.
a.   Alexander Hay was christened at St. Nicholas Parish on 28.11.1814. Parents were James Hay and Isabella Forsyth. Known siblings were Christian, John and William. Another family tree found on the internet states that this Alexander married Annie Turner and died in 1882.
b.   Alexander Hay was christened at Old Machar Parish on 8.7.1812. Parents were James Hay and Elizabeth Moir. Known siblings were Elizabeth, William and Barbara.
c.   Alexander Hay was christened at Old Machar Parish on 17.8.1811. Parents were Adam Hay and Jean Milne married 25.4.1809 at New Machar and Peterhead. Known siblings were Charles Stephen (ch. 18.4.1813), Elizabeth (ch. 30.7.1814) and Adam (ch. 7.3.1823). Adam Hay (senior) was possibly ch.5 or 25.4.1786 at Glenbucket, Aberdeen- parents being Adam Hay and Elizabeth Ogg.
d.   Alexander Hay was christened at Braemar and Glengairn Parish on 22.9.1811. Parents were Alexander Hay and Jean McHardy. Known sibling was George 19.4.1806. The 1841 census shows a Jean, aged 65 and an Alexander, aged 25, shoemaker at Peterhead and also Alexander aged 55, Army pensioner and Jean, aged 50 at Cruden Kippslaw.
e.   Alexander Hay was christened 21.8.1813 at Belhelvie. Parents were William Hay and Catherine Troup, Siblings were Susan, Ann, Jannet, Isobel, Mary, Jean Kathrine and William. Most buried at Belhelvie.
f.   Alexander Hay was born 10.12.1814 Peterhead. Father was Alexander Hay, mother not listed.
g.   Alexander Hay was christened at St. Nicholas Parish on 4.5.1809. Parents were Thomas Hay and Mary Murray. The 1841 census shows a Thomas (60), Mary (60) and Alexander Hay (30) at home in St Clements Aberdeen – the Alexander is listed as a ship carpenter, thus this is probably not my Alexander.
Any assistance welcomed.

Aberdeenshire / Alexander Hay, Marjory Bruce St Nicholas Aberdeen
« on: Tuesday 13 September 05 05:43 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone provide any detail on Alexander Hay who married Marjory Bruce on 29.10.1836 @ St Nicholas Aberdeen.
She was child of George Bruce and Marjory Fraser. They had 2 or 3 children-  Alexander, my gggfather, christened 23.12.1840, Marjory ch. 5.10.1838  both at St Nicholas. They also had Jane born 1838 (no christening can be found).

1841 census shows the family in Love Lane, Spittal, Aberdeen comprising Alexander 30, mason, Marjory 30, George 10, Jean 5 and Alexander 5 months.
Alexander (senior) died prior to 1846 as Marjory (senior) married James Ross on 28.5.1846 Old Machar. Alexander junior also became a mason and came to Australia about 1865.
I have found 7 Alexander Hay born in Aberdeenshire around 1810, but cannot pin-point the right one.
Any assistance welcomed.
