« on: Monday 29 June 15 13:51 BST (UK)  »
Hello, my father-in-law recently discovered three family photos with what we assume to be German writing on the back.  We would be very grateful if someone could translate for us.  The third is attached.  Thank you in advance for your efforts!

Family History Beginners Board / Marriage of John Taylor and Ann Rodgers
« on: Tuesday 28 April 15 00:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I am searching for the parents of John Taylor, born in Manchester around 1871-1874.  The earliest record I have been able to locate is that of his 1892 marriage in Manchester to Mary Ann Hill, on which his father's name was recorded as John Taylor, quarry man (deceased).  His death certificate confirms that his father's name was John Taylor, and lists his mother's maiden name as Ann Rodgers, both born in England.  I have not been able to find any record of a marriage either between John Taylor and Ann Rodgers, or between John Taylor and a widow named Ann with a father named Rodgers.  Does anyone see anything that I'm missing?  Any help would be much appreciated!

Note:  I posted a similar topic last year, looking for John Taylor, quarryman, and his wife, but at the time I didn't have the name of Ann Rogers, and I think I was looking at the wrong family.  That thread is here, in case it is of any help:    http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=698406.0

  Thank you!

Mayo / Groark in Swinford
« on: Wednesday 18 February 15 20:41 GMT (UK)  »
I am just beginning my search for ancestors in Ireland, so please bear with me...

Michael Groark was born about 1853 in Ireland, and left for Philadelphia in 1872.  According to his 1907 obituary his parents were John and Bridget Groark, late, of Swinford.  I have located a John Groark in Griffith's Valuation of Cuillaun, Parish of Kilconduff:

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&Submit.x=22&Submit.y=6&familyname=groark&firstname=john&baronyname=GALLEN&countyname=MAYO&unionname=SWINEFORD&parishname=KILCONDUFF

John appears repeatedly in the valuation with a Laurence Groark and a Bridget Groark.  Having seen this, I'm not sure where to go next to determine whether these are my Groarks.  I do see a listing for a John Groark (1823-1871) in Swinford in the Civil Registration Deaths Index.  If I can obtain this record, is it likely to give his wife's name, or any other clues as to whether this is the right John Groark?  Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Family History Beginners Board / John Taylor, Quarryman, and wife Anna
« on: Friday 05 September 14 16:53 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I am searching for information on a John Taylor.  On his son's 1892 marriage record he is listed as a quarryman (deceased).  I believe I have located his family in Manchester in 1871- his widow Anne/Anna (born in Ireland), and his children, John H. (age 5) and Susannah (age 13).  There may have been another daughter, Mary Ellen, as there is a Manchester baptism record from 1866 for both Susannah and Mary Ellen listing John Taylor, quarryman, and Anna as parents.  It appears that Anna was remarried to a John Foster, probably in Manchester between 1871 and 1874. I have been unable to locate the John Taylor or his family in 1861.  I also hope to locate a record of either of Anna'a marriages and discover her maiden name.  Any help or ideas would be much appreciated!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / COMPLETED: Help Identifying "L"
« on: Monday 16 June 14 19:56 BST (UK)  »
Found this photo in an old family album, but can't identify the young men.  Hoping someone may recognize the "L" on the sweater?  Likely from Philadelphia area.

Many thanks!
