Family History Beginners Board / Getting back into it
« on: Friday 09 April 21 18:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi :)
I've not been working on my family research for at least 3or 4 years.
I've accumulated a fairly extensive tree that for the most part I'm reasonably confident about.
I no longer have subscriptions to any paid websites.

What I would like help/ suggestions with/about is how to approach getting back into it all!
Anybody got any suggestions?
Thanks :)

« on: Friday 17 February 17 14:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi :)

Are there any records available for Stockport Workouse around 1882?

Ancestry have some death records from then but I wonder if there is anything else available anywhere else?

Thanks :)

The Common Room / Occupation - housekeeper
« on: Friday 17 February 17 13:43 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon  :)

I've just received a death certificate from 1882 with occupation stated as "Housekeeper of Cheadle" The woman died in a work house seemingly from a 3 month, possibly longer, illness.

My question is -  does housekeeper refer to her being a housewife or that she held a position in another household?

Thanks for any help, advice you can give me :)

The Common Room / Certificates 1840s onwards
« on: Thursday 09 February 17 16:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi :)

Apologies beforehand if this is a silly question!
Would people come away from registering a birth etc with a certificate much as we would today?
Did people own and keep their birth certificate?

Thanks and sorry again if it's a daft question :)

Family History Beginners Board / Missing from 1891 and 1901 census
« on: Wednesday 08 February 17 13:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there all :)

I keep coming back to my research periodically to see if I can tie up anymore loose ends. I've come across a couple of census gaps and can't for the life of me seem to find the person anywhere.

Ellen Clowes born 1857 Onecote, Leek Staffs
                  probable death 1935 Fylde, Lancashire

I have her in the 1861, 1871, 1881 with her parents (Elisha & Emma) in staffs. 1881 - Cheddleton.

I also have her in 1911 in Oldham, Lancs as a single cook

Can anybody find her in 1891 and 1901?

I'd be most grateful indeed :)

Does anyone have any insight into criminal registers & their transcriptions please?

I'm looking at a criminal record transcription about a session at the Old Bailey on FindMyPast.
Series - HO27
Piece - 210
Piece scope - Lancashire - Rutland

Can anybody tell me what the Piece scope is referring to please? What is the connection to Lancashire - Rutland?

Thanks

The Common Room / Public Assistance Institute
« on: Thursday 01 September 16 19:01 BST (UK)  »
Hello there  :)

Would a person be expected to supply their date of birth when entering a Public Assistance Institute in the 1930's?
I'm wondering about the likelihood of a date of birth being on a death certificate for someone dying in such an institute.

Thanks

London and Middlesex / Where was Southampton Street 1881
« on: Monday 20 June 16 11:59 BST (UK)  »
hi :)

I'm getting all confused with trying to work out where Southampton Street in 1881 would be now. I just can't get my head around if names have changed or if it is no longer there.

It comes under London, St James Clerkenwell, Pentonville 6a in the 1881 census
It also mentions it was in the parliamentary borough of Finsbury on the actual page.
Looking ahead to the next streets - South Street - Crown Stables  there is also mention of 67 Southampton Street (Robin Hood)
The description of the area on the first page starts of saying - west side of Southampton Street from the Pentonville Road and then just goes on to confuse me even more.

Please could someone tell me where Southampton Street would be now?
