Tipperary / How do I get started in Tipperary Records?
« on: Wednesday 02 July 14 08:42 BST (UK)  »
My great grandmother Margaret Keogh was born 20 December 1861 in Tipperary. Her parents are listed as James Keogh and Mary Burke (Bourke) who married in Tipperary 6 May 1855. Their other children were Catherine b. 12 May 1856, Bridgett b. 15 February 1859, Mary b. 29 May 1864, Elizabeth b. 6 May 1867 and Michael b. 6 July 1871 (all in Tipperary). What part of Tipperary I don't have a clue, which church/parish/etc. I do not know. What's my first step to find out more about James Keogh and Mary Burke (Bourke)? Are any records online?

Cambridgeshire Completed Lookups / Harry Furness at Fulbourn Asylum 1919-1935
« on: Monday 28 April 14 05:30 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking information on my mothers uncle HARRY FURNESS (sometimes spelled Furniss). He was born in 1893 at Cherry Hinton and served in WWI. On 7/21/1919 he was transferred to Fulbourn Asylum from a war hospital in Glamorgan, so I am assuming he was injured. He was soldier # 241238.  He died at Fulborn  6/15/1935, so it must have been a permanent issue with his mental health if he was at Fulbourn for 16 years.  I would like to know more about his stay at Fulbourn.

I have traced my maternal line back to Cold Higham, Northamptonshire.  Stephen Furniss b. 4 Nov 1787 Cold Higham married Catherine Hawkins 9 July 1815 and they had 5 children: Abigal 1816, William 1818, Marie 1821, Eliza 1824 and Thomas 1828.

My "mystery" is that these children all appear on the Cold Higham parish registers with father Stephen Furniss but their mother is called Caroline.  At first I thought perhaps it was just a case of her real name being Catherine Caroline or Caroline Catherine Hawkins, however, I cannot find a birth record ANYWHERE for a Catherine Hawkins or Caroline Hawkins.  I did find Catherine's death record as 7 March 1848 in Grimscote, but I've never been able to find the name "Caroline" except in the childrens birth records. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Family History Beginners Board / New to Irish Records
« on: Sunday 27 April 14 23:52 BST (UK)  »
While I have researched USA records for 30+ years, I am new to Irish records and I would appreciate any suggestions for finding information on my great, great grandparents in Ireland records.

My great grandmother was Margaret Keogh born 20 Dec 1861 in Tipperary (died 29 Sept 1916 Cambridge, England) (married Thomas William Furniss 29 Sept 1882 while he was in UK military at Tipperary).

I would like to know more information about HER parents: James Keogh and Mary Burke of Tipperary.  I do not know their date/place of birth or anything about them.  James Keogh and Mary Burke had the following children:
Catherine 12 May 1856
Bridget 15 Feb 1859
Margaret 20 Dec 1861  my great grandmother  (used nickname "Maggie")
Mary 29 May 1864
Elizabeth 6 May 1867
Michael 6 July 1871

Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I have just found out that a great grandmother, Eliza Jane (nee Morrall) born in 1882 at Newcastle, Staffordshire and died at  Cheddleton Mental Asylum Staffordshire  (St. Edwards) on 12/18/1963. She was married several times, so her last name at the time of her death could have been: Eaton  or  Dunklee  or Finlay.

I am curious why she would have died in a mental institution. Does that suggest that she had mental issues or was this a full service medical hospital for people with health issues as well?

Also, does the hospital have a cemetery?  I've never been able to find her grave. What is the closest cemetery to the hospital?

Any and all suggestions on how to proceed with my search would be greatly appreciated!!
