Canada / Herbert Schofield
« on: Wednesday 12 October 05 20:56 BST (UK)  »
Can any one help me trace the history of my Great Uncle Bert??

Herbert Schofield was born in 1886 to John Henry Schofield and Anne Wooley. He had a twin sister Ethel Schofield and an elder Brother James Henry Schofield.

It is believed that Bert served in the Great War of 1914 / 18 and emigrated to Canada some time later.  Family rumour has it that he married someone called Pearl? but don't know whether she was English or Canadian.

I have searched many lists of Canadian immigrants to no avail.
I have also tried the Canadian census but without knowing where in Canada he was it is the proverbial needle in a haystack!!

Can anyone help out with search areas or further information.

Thanks in advance

David.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Dents in the Dales ??
« on: Wednesday 12 October 05 16:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

My continued searches have moved me to the Yorkshire Dales and to the villages of Thoralby, Newbiggin and Bishopdale, all near to Aysgarth, which is the nearest church for Christenings, Marriages etc.

The Dent family lived in these villages from at least 1784 to the mid 1900's.

John Dent b1784 married Elanor?? and had 11 children, three of whom were Johns!(1816, 1820 and 1822) the others being George, Isabell, James, Elizabeth, Ann, Elanor, William and Jane.

George married Ann Lord and had 5 children, one of whom was George Dent 1862 who is my Grt Grandfather.

My questions - at last - are...........Who were John Dent's(1784) Parents and siblings?         And also what happened to the other 10 of his children??

All help and suggestions will be most welcome

Happy hunting

David.

Europe / Irish Exodus - Help!!
« on: Saturday 24 September 05 19:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi RootsChatters,

From the replies to other posts in this forum it has become clear that there are no records for those involved in the "Irish Exodus" in the mid 1800's.

There fore how do I trace my ancestors whose records in the UK (Census returns for 1861,1871 etc) state the place of birth as "Ireland"

There are more Kavanagh's in Ireland than Smiths in England........nearly.

My Gt Gt Grandad was Peter Kavanagh who was born in Ireland in 1811. He came to England between 1846 and 1851. (Son John was born in Ireland in 1846 and Son Peter in Cheshire in 1851).

Any advice (apart from give up!!) would be appreciated.

Thanks

The Common Room / Post 1901 research
« on: Saturday 24 September 05 19:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi RootChatters,

Is there a recommended method for tracking down lost family members post the 1901 census?

I have managed to trace a few strands forward from 18th Century to the 1901 census but don't know how to bring these line to a current 2005 closure.

It is a frustrating case of " so near yet so far". ???

Your ideas and experience would be most gratefull to many novice roots chatters, myself included.

Thanks in anticipation

England / John Marks Circa 1868 to 1927ish
« on: Saturday 24 September 05 19:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone help me shed some light on the whereabouts of John Marks between 1881 and 1901??

John was born in Churchstanton Devon/Somerset in either 1867, 1868 or 1870 depending on which census returns you read :-

1871 census = b1867
1881 census = b1868
1901 census = b1870

He was still alive for the wedding of his daughter Lilian (my Grandmother) in 1926

However I cannot locate him in the 1891 census.  Have I missed a trick? ???

Any help from you wise RootsChatters about his whereabouts would be most welcome.

Cheers

Derbyshire / Lillian Marks - Hartington Derbyshire
« on: Thursday 22 September 05 13:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Can anyone out there shed any light on the family background of my late grandmother Lillian Marks.

I know that she was born in 1899, died in 1975 and is buried in Hartington Churchyard in Derbyshire.

In 1926 she married Thomas Kavanagh and the wedding register was signed by a Florence Marks and a John Marks.

I suspect that John was her father and Florence her sister but this is pure speculation.

I cannot find any BMD records for her family or any census returns.  Help please......

Derbyshire / John Robert Sherratt's Family
« on: Thursday 22 September 05 11:57 BST (UK)  »
Help!!

I am trying to trace my the family history of my grandad's step brother John Robert Sherratt.

John was born in Hartington in 1900, died in 1977 and is buried in Hartington Church with his wife Irene who was born circa 1907 and died in 2000.  The grave stone mentions their son Jeffery.

Who was Irene?? I have tried the church records to no avail and don't know where to look next.

Similarly when was Jeffery born?? is he still alive, what is his story??

Did John and Irene have any other children??  The questions could go on for ever.

Can anyone in the land of RootsChat shed any light on this side of my family??

Thanks

Derbyshire / Kavanaghs in Buxton
« on: Thursday 22 September 05 11:30 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any information on the history of the Kavanaghs in Buxton?

I am particularly interested in following up any conatcts to either of the two Peter Kavanaghs, father and son.

Peter Kavanagh (Father) was born in Macclesfield in 1856 and had moved to Buxton with his wife Mary and son Peter (born 1889) at the time of the 1901 census.

Can anyone shed any light on what happend to these people since 1901?

Thanks in anticipation
