Occupation Interests / Domestic Chaplain to Royalty
« on: Monday 23 January 17 23:19 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone assist with what the requirements were to be appointed as domestic Chaplain to a Prince, and what duties would it entail.

I've got a couple in my tree. But they were clergy around Dorset and/or Devon.

I was once told that it was purely a methodology to provide someone who had found favour with the Royal Family with added income. But no idea how true that is.

Australia / Adelaide Inquest
« on: Wednesday 03 February 16 00:04 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for a name in an inquest held in Adelaide in January 1839.

I have seen an account in Trove, but suspect that the reporter may have got one name wrong. A very common mistake with the name in question.

Now I guess to check I need to see the actual records.

Anyone know if they exist.

If so where?

Anyone have access to them, as I'm in NSW and have problems with travel.

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

« on: Sunday 30 August 15 04:00 BST (UK)  »

I have found a few news reports re promotions etc, but family history says he went to Australia with the Navy liking what he saw, came out.

I can't find any record of him coming with the Navy.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Dorset Lookup Requests / W H Gorton born 1798
« on: Friday 28 August 15 06:25 BST (UK)  »
I have a William Henry Gorton, baptized Melcolme Regis  9 June 1798.

Nothing to amazing so far, same name a his dad who was. Clergyman, so we would expect a baptism.

But just a few years later 12 Feb 1804 there is another William Henry baptized to the same parents, this one dies in 1886 and the age at death matches someone born around 04.

However I have no death recorded anywhere for the one born in '98.

Now I admit I may be looking in all the wrong spots, and being in Australia it is basically all done online.

We have speculated that his entry in the registers was just overlooked due to grief, though there is some pretty string evidence that dads Church Registers were not, perhaps as well kept as they could be, there is a reference in the Chickerell OPC site that supports this.

And help gratefully received.

Australia / William Vernon Leathes Gorton
« on: Saturday 22 August 15 07:22 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find William Vernon Leathes Gorton's birth.

He was the son of Charles and Emily (Duncombe).

Think he was born in Sydney in 1853.

He died in Queensland 1929.

Charles and Emily's other kids are all neatly registered and baptized, William we can't find exact details for. He married Marion Chapman (who was living with the Jessop family her parents having died in England) and was an early settler in Cooktown.

Any help appreciated.

Devon / Rev William Gorton
« on: Wednesday 21 May 14 02:24 BST (UK)  »
My 3x Great Grandfather was Rev William Henry Gorton, he was Rector of Chickerell and Vicar of Sherborne Dorset and died in Chickerell in 1830. He was born in Tiverton Devon in 1766, his father was David Gorton a Fuller of Tiverton.

We think his mother was Ann.

Can anyone help with tracking down, His mother for certain, and his grandparents etc.

I am in Australia and am limited to what I can find online.

Any help greatly appreciated. I have also posted this under Dorset.
