The Common Room / Wrong name on a headstone?
« on: Saturday 10 October 15 19:40 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I wonder if anybody out there knows if it was 'common' to have surnames spelt wrong on grave stones years ago? I've found it quite common on various certificates and what not but would it of happened on something as important as a head stone?

I've found the headstone of a wife of a great great great grandfather and it says that she was the wife of David Hoggan but my relatives name was David Haggart. It's the right person just a different name.

I don't suppose there's a definite answer to this question but I thought if ask.

Many thanks,

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Joseph Ernest Varley 1901 Barnsley
« on: Thursday 03 September 15 19:10 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

Is there any way that I could somehow look up a census record to try and see if somebody was in a certain place at a certain time? I hope that makes sense?  ???

The person I question is Joseph Ernest Varley who was born 1901 in Barnsley. I want to somehow try and find out where he was around 1946 if that's at all possible? I'm wondering if he was around the Great Yarmouth area in Norfolk...

Any information would be greatly appreciated :)

I hope to hear from you,

Scott

« on: Monday 31 August 15 11:56 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for any information on somebody named Sarah Ann Meachen. I believe that she was born 1847 in East Tuddenham, Norfolk. She married a man by the name of Charles Guymer, they married in 1868. Any information on Sarah's parents would be brilliant, I'd also love to hear from anybody who thinks that they may be related to these people :)

All the best

Scotland / William Alison and Helen Stewart, Scotland
« on: Tuesday 04 August 15 19:15 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

Does anybody have any information on a Robert Alison who married a Helen Stewart? I don't have any births for this couple but they are both listed as parents to a William Alison on a death certificate that I've recently purchased for him.

William passed away June 27th 1865 at the age of 70 in Kirktown, St Cyrus and he married a lady named Betsy Wood.

Another thing thing I wanted to know was this, Betsy is also on the death certificate and it's stated that she passed away on July 6th, 1865 and that she was the daughter of James Wood and Mary Jarvis.

Now, underneath her name on the certificate it says illegitimate in brackets, would this mean that the parents stated on the certificate aren't actually hers or is it just stating the fact that she was illegitimate and that James and Mary are in fact her parents?

I think I may have asked this in a previous post but nobody actually answered it, so I hope that somebody can help me with some of this,

All the best,

Scott

Norfolk / Guymer family norfolk
« on: Thursday 30 July 15 21:48 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I'm looking for information on a lady named Eva Guymer, she was born around 1880 in East Tuddenham, Norfolk. She married a man by the name of William Benjamin Reeve who passed away in Mesopatamia in 1916. They had a daughter named Sheila.

Eva also married a man by the name of Walter Twitchett and I think that this was in London.

I'm really looking for any info on her parents or anything there after, I'd love to hear from anybody who might be related.

Hello all,

Does anybody have any information on a May or possibly a Mary Reid? I thin that she would've been born around 1800, possibly in Dundee. I can't find a birth for her though to purchase a birth certificate!

I do know that she married a man by the name of Robert Wright in Dundee, 22nd of December 1822.

I've put a post on here before about Robert and various members of his family and his children with May but I want to try and concentrate on May/Mary this time as I can't seem to find anything on my own and I don't know how to do the searches that people seem to do for me on here!

Any information would be greatly appreciated,

All the best

Lanarkshire / General question about finding somebody. Shaw family
« on: Friday 24 July 15 19:17 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

A while ago I was trying to find the father of an illegitimate child, and eventually I think that I found out it was a man named Thomas Shaw.

Now my question is, how can I look up somebody that I don't have a date of birth for?  ??? I don't know anything about this man, all I do know is that in 1871 one of his children or at least somebody claiming that he was his child put his name on a marriage certificate stating that Thomas was a joiner.

Now this child was born in Glasgow I believe and his mother was from Fife, but I've found records of her living in Govan and the Gorbals so I PRESUME that Thomas would've been from the Glasgow area himself but of course, this could be wrong....

I just don't know where to start with this. It's something that I put to one side some months ago and know I'm thinking of digging it up again.

I hope to hear from you,

Scott

Scotland / General questions about the Haggart family
« on: Tuesday 21 July 15 19:10 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I have been doing my family research for some time now but I am still pretty new to it all :)

Basically I'm just looking for anyone related to the Haggart families of Scotland in particular the Haggarts of Fife, but I'm interested in hearing from anyone who is a Haggart or is related to one as you never know where or how you might find a link and I'm at somewhat of a dead end with my searches at the moment.

Also anybody with any information on the Haggart name itself would be greatly welcomed. I'm interested in the origins of the name as I've heard many different stories as to where it's from, I.E. It's a variant of Mctaggart and a variant of Haggarty but if anyone has any evidence of anything I'd love to hear from you!

All the best and happy searching,

Scott

Norfolk / The Simmons family Gt Yarmouth
« on: Monday 22 June 15 17:42 BST (UK)  »
Please help me find any information on a man named James Thomas Simmons. He lived at some point in Gt Yarmouth, Norfolk. He could possibly of been born there but I'm not sure about this. I know only of one child of his who was named Louisa Gertrude Simmons, she was born around 1890 in Gt Yarmouth, Norfolk and she married a man named George Charles Underwood. I don't know James Thomas Simmons birthday or the name of his wife so any information that anybody could dig up for me would be greatly appreciated. I do know that at some point he worked as a labourer as it's stated on George and Louisa's marriage certificate that I purchased recently.

I really hope that somebody can help me.

Thank you,

Scott.
