Scotland / Alexander William Gow
« on: Wednesday 11 June 14 22:52 BST (UK)  »
Alexander William Gow was baptised in 20.12.1795 at Holy Sepulchre church, Northampton, son of Charles and Margarette. Can't find the marriage of Charles and Margarette in England, Scotland or Ireland (Gows appear to originate from all three). I know only of a marriage in 22.2.1793 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland, with children then apparently being born in Angus, not Northampton. Is anyone who knows their way round Scottish records able to point me to any other candidate marriages? By the way, I am pretty sure that Alexander William was the same A W Gow who was a drummer in the 48th Regiment of Foot, but I have no idea whether his father Charles was also a soldier. Thanks v much,
Steve Owen

The Common Room / Mediaeval sources
« on: Wednesday 11 June 14 20:48 BST (UK)  »
"He says he can trace his ancestors back to the Norman Conquest" usually brings a wry smile ..but..amongst the nearly three thousand ancestors I have verified for my family tree, mostly containing the usual AgLabs with the odd butcher, soldier, vicar etc, an unexpected link has suddenly appeared to Lancashire squirearchy in the mid- 1500s- early 1600s that opens out to via Sir this and Lord that to a lady named Lady Eleanor Plantaganet and thence Henry III and William the Conk himself. My verification process so far relies on parish records. What are the most reliable records to try to verify this link back to William's First XV at Hastings?

Hi people

My first post so apologies right at the start if my L plate shows.
I believe the marriage between the two people above took place at Croxall in Derbyshire. Does anyone live close to and get into the Derbyshire archives and might be able to run a check on the Croxall parish register for that date? My drill is always to try to see the actual entry (eg on fiche or microfilm) rather than rely on a commercial Family History database. Thanks,
