Aberdeenshire / John Davidson Death at Sea
« on: Tuesday 20 January 15 21:47 GMT (UK)  »
I am interested in information regarding John Davidson a ships carpenter from Aberdeen.
I have found a record of a John Davidson's death at sea on the 12th Feb 1858 a crew member on the Caledonia (Aberdeen).
Margaret Davidson (née Young) can be found on the 1851 census Toxteth, Liverpool listed as a ships carpenters wife and on the 1861 census Worsley, Lancashire listed as a widow

If John died at sea would he have been buried there, will there be a death certificate, if there is where can I get a copy.

Where could I find the crew list for the Caledonia.

Flintshire Lookup Requests / A long shot in the dar
« on: Thursday 30 October 14 22:29 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching my Williams family history, the family are from Birmingham and have been traced back to Oswestry. The family believe the family originated from Wales. I have traced the Williams family back to Shackfield Williams marriage to Mary Humphries in Oswestry, Shropshire 6th Feb 1773. This is were my research stops as I have hit a brickwall.
I have only been able to find one more Shackfield Williams who married Clara Eds, in Caerwys 1685.
I know it is a shot in the dark, but because of the unusual name (Shackfield) I was wondering if a link could be made to my Shackfield.

I would appreciate a look up in the parish records to find if Shackfield and Clara had any children. I am trying to trace the family forward to 1750

Travelling People / My Romany connection.
« on: Friday 22 August 14 22:36 BST (UK)  »
I am a direct descendant of the Gibbings/Gibbons from North Devon, this family are believed to be a Romany Gypsy Family. A female member of this family married my gg grandfather who was not of gypsy. I have been trying to evidence the Romany connection. At this stage all I have to confirm that the Gibbings are Romany Gypsy is by thier occupation that of Marine Store Dealer, Hawkers and Chimney Sweep. The family appear to have fixed abodes and they moved around the North Devon area.
I would appreciate any support and advice to help me evidence the Romany connection.
I would like to know if it was common for Gypsies to marry non gypsies and should I assume that the Gibbings family tree upto the the marriage of my gg grandfather was of full gypsy origan.

Aberdeenshire Lookup Requests / John Davidson
« on: Sunday 13 July 14 15:42 BST (UK)  »
I am struggling to find the birth of John Davidson and I have limited confirmed information.

John was a shipwright / seaman and I have not been able to find him on any census records. The family have connection to Aberdeen, London and Liverpool all major docks. The family can be traced to all these ports, but there is no mention of John.
John married Margaret Young in the parish of Old Machar, Aberdeen on the 31st Oct 1829. Margaret Young was from Inverness as yet I do not have any birth details for her.

I have found a birth for a  John Davidson 30th September 1805, Old Machar parents James Davidson and Elspeth Blacknall. I am not a 100% sure that this is my John Davidson, the only thing supporting this is the birth is in the same parish as the marriage and that James is a family name.

I would appreciate any support and advice which could help me locate John Davidson's birth.

Lancashire / Rann Broker
« on: Sunday 15 June 14 17:58 BST (UK)  »
According to the 1911 census for West Derby my great grandfather was William Stirrup he was a Rann Broker, I assume this should be Rand Broker. William was to my knowledge was a pawn broker in Scotland Rd, Liverpool. Is there a link between a Rann Broker and a Pawn Broker, or is the occupation more to do with banking. My uncle worked for the Bank of South Africa until he retired, is there a history of South African banking in Liverpool, if so where could I find out more.
