Montgomeryshire / Meifod Main Independent Chapel Records?
« on: Tuesday 29 August 23 13:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I was wondering if anyone has a copy of the Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society's publication of Main Independent Chapel : Register of baptisms, 1821-1837? According to their website the booklet is out of stock. I have a transcription of the baptism/birth of Mary Taylor there on 11 Nov 1826 daughter of an Edward Jones Taylor. The actual parish register images are not available online and I live down in Wiltshire. I don't know if the booklet has any other information to expand upon the transcription. If anyone has it I would really appreciate a look up to check if possible.

I know that Mary went on to marry John Brown at Penrhos Chapel on 8 Mar 1850 and gives her father's name as Edward Taylor and that he was a Labourer. She died 7 Jan 1851 in Shrewsbury. Just having trouble finding out further details about her line as the baptism doesn't seem to give a mother's name and not finding any definitive details for Edward in the surrounding area. It is possible that Mary was working at the Britannia Inn in Pool in 1841 - there is also a John Taylor aged 60 who is a Nail Maker living in Pool in 1841 too so I don't know if there is any connection. There is also a Robert Gibbons Taylor aged 30 living at Main, Meifod in 1841 but he is not born in the county and his occupation is down as "Ind". I don't think there is any connection there as he comes from a pretty wealthy family.

Also to note I am not sure whether this 1826 entry is "my" Mary as I am also aware of a baptism in Llanymynech in 1820 for a Mary Taylor daughter of Edward and Jane - and given Mary's age on her death certificate and burial is 30 which puts her year of birth around 1821 - this Llanymynech baptism may be the correct one but I haven't also found anything for either Mary to rule either of those entries out so hoping the Meifod details might help shed some light!

Also if anyone can suggest who might hold the actual parish register as doesn't look like the Montgomeryshire Archives do - is it with the National Archives/Library of Wales? I don't seem to have much luck in locating where it is stored to go about seeing if someone can check the actual register for me.

Thanks in advance!

World War Two / Navy Service Record Queries
« on: Sunday 15 May 22 16:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi all. I recently received a copy of my husband's paternal grandfathers WWII Navy record. Typically it doesn't provide much information but he was a Stoker but did not actually serve on ships as he was posted at airfields - namely HMS Raven, HMS Ringtail and HMS Wagtail. As a stoker rank presumably his duties at an airfield would be different to those of a stoker on a ship - would it be right that he would have served more like a fireman?

He was discharged in August 1946 for being Invalided - Pronounced Unfit for Naval Service after having been at the Royal Naval Hospitals in Plymouth and Sherborne from March 1946. There is no other information about why he was in hospital and the only notation about it states "Invalided 3/8/46 DNA3AR/E Nil FSL." Does the DNA3AR refer to the Royal Patriotic Fund? And Nil FSL - means no Foreign Service Leave?

I'm guessing we might not find out much more about the reasons behind the hospitalisation - do the Royal Navy Hospitals typically provide information on deceased servicemen if you contact them?

Thanks in advance

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help deciphering occupation on 1604 baptism
« on: Saturday 04 December 21 23:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all. I am trying to work out the details of the occupation of the father listed on the baptism of Danniel Storie from 2nd Sept 1604 at St. Lawrence Pountney, London son of Robert Storie (from the London collection on Ancestry.) I believe the first letter is S based on the S's used in son and Storie. I think perhaps second letter might be a h based on the occupation at the top of the page being schoolmaster. Any help is much appreciated. I am not sure if this relates to a Robert Storer who married a widow Joane Pusie in St. Dunstan in the West in 1592 who was a Barber Surgeon. The name Storer is often spelled Storey and other variations. I am trying to find out more about a Daniel Storer who died in Reigate in 1658/9 and left a will mentioning his wife Anne, his daughter also called Anne, his widowed daughter in law Ellinor who was married to his son Daniel and their children Jude and Anne. His grandaughter Anne died the same month he did and Jude was my husband's 8x great grandfather. Daniel junior was a Barber Surgeon according to details on his daughter Anne's baptism and burial records. So would be interested if there might be a link with this baptism entry from 1604.

Thanks in advance!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with a Latin will sentence from 1630
« on: Tuesday 23 February 21 09:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All. Last week I got some fabulous help with details of an administration of a will of Jane Parvis from 1614 and at the end of that post I mentioned about details relating to her son John Parvis of North Fawley, Berkshire. His will is available on the National Archives website from 1629 but the piece number covering that wasn't available on Ancestry - however the sentence relating to that will from 1630 is available on Ancestry.

John's will was written in June 1629, he was not married and didn't have any children but bequeathed sums of money to various relatives:

His nephew Humfrey Gunter and his children - two are named - Lester and John.
His nephew Henry Gunter and his daughter Mary, son Henry, son Humfrey and other children not named.
His brother in law Humfrey Gunter and his other children (he was the father of the Humfrey and Henry named above) and his daughter Elizabeth wife of Edward Davies.
His sister Ann Ffawne/Fawne
His sister Mary Mitchell

Also names two unrelated people Thomas Tanter/Traunter and William Westwood

He named his brother in law and nephew Humfrey Gunter snr & jnr as his executors and his nephew Henry was a witness.

I know that John had a sister Valentine - named in his father's will of 1587 who then seems to have been subsequently known as Edith. She is named in her mother's will as Edith (no surname) and in her brother Thomas's will of 1617 (a snip of that detail is also included for some help to decipher Edith's surname (highlighted) - definitely starts with a P as it is the same P as is used in "Parvys" and ends in a y, but unsure if it is something like Pirry, Perry, Pinny, Penny etc.) She is not mentioned in John's will so I am presuming she had died before him.

John also had a sister Joan/Jane who is named in her father's will and mother's will and brother Thomas's will and her surname given on Thomas's will looks to be spelled Storey. From what I can make out in the sentence of John's will she seems to be mentioned as Jonam Parvis alias Story. So I am wondering if she was still alive and had contested his will as she had not been mentioned/left anything.

I am not after a word for word transcription but would like to understand the general gist of what the case was about if possible!

The following is available on Ancestry via the Records of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury collection, Series PROB 11; Class: PROB 11; Piece: 157 and is copyright the National Archives and is reproduced in order to help with deciphering in chunks.

Thanks in advance for taking a look and helping me out - it is very much appreciated.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Some help deciphering administration from 1614
« on: Thursday 18 February 21 10:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

I am usually not too bad with deciphering some old wills and handwriting, but finding this one a touch frustrating.

Some background - this relates to a widow Jane Parvis/Parvys - previously had lived at Soley in Chilton Foliat, Wiltshire but seemingly after her husband Henry's death in 1588 signed over her interest in the property to her son Jewell/Juell/Joel in 1594 and next record of her is this administration in 1614 managed by her son in law Humphrey Gunter who had married her eldest daughter Elizabeth. By then she was living in West Knoyle, Wiltshire.

Her husband's will gives the names of their children as Joel (aka Jewell), John, Richard, Thomas, Elizabeth Gunter, Joane/Jane, Anne, Mary and Valentyne. I am not sure if Valentine ends up being known as Edith as Jane's son Thomas's will of 1617 mentions his sister Edith but no mention of Valentyne.

The following is available on Ancestry via the Wiltshire Wills collection and is copyright Wiltshire and Swindon Archives and is reproduced in order to help with deciphering in chunks:

"The account of Humfrey Gunter admin ? the goods of Jane Parvys late of Knoyell ? in the County of Wilts made before Mr Hungerford Chancellor? To the ? ? of ? the 6th of November Anno Dom 1614
(can’t read next line)"

"The discharge
Imprimis the ? to be ? out of the inventorie two ould bibbles ? at ? one ould ? gowne at xxs (20s). An ould ? hyms ? value at x? an other ould ? ? (struggling to make out most the the rest of that portion.)
? ? in and about the funeral ? ? John Parvis for (can’t read rest)

Item spent in travelling from ? ? fawle (I am thinking as Humfrey lived in Fawley, Berkshire) to Knoyell and for writing the inventories.
? travel ? to Newberry/Newbury for the ? ? and for the ? hereof/thereof?
(Struggling to read the rest.

Last section in Latin – but contains names relating to Jane’s children, Jewell, John, Richard – crossed out, Thomas, Elizabeth Anne, Jane, possibly Edith and Marie/Mary.)

The second page I will post as a reply to this as two more attachments to include.

World War One / Regiments Posted in Essex in 1917?
« on: Friday 18 January 19 13:54 GMT (UK)  »
This might be a wild stab in the dark, but I am trying to see if I can narrow down some information pertaining to my great grandfather. The back story is a little complicated - he was the father of my maternal grandmother who was born in Maldon, Essex in July 1918 - but his name was unknown until I made a discovery thanks to Ancestry DNA matches with a 2nd cousin to my Mum and have narrowed him down to one of two brothers...

1. James Brown Ferguson b. 1882 in Glasgow.
2. Frederick Hugh Georgeson Ferguson b. 1890 in Glasgow

They were both sons of Hugh Ferguson and Marion Steele Brown. Their older brother Duncan b. 1879 served in WWI and I have the details of his service record.

At the moment I am not finding anything definitive for WWI records for either of the two brothers. My grandmother was told her father was in the army, and that he was killed before he could marry her mother. I know that neither James or Frederick were killed in WWI as they both never married and died in Scotland.  I know that not all WWI records survived, so I am conscious that I might not find anything detailed. I also know that their brother Duncan couldn't have been the father as otherwise his granddaughter and my mother would be 1st cousins not 2nd cousins and would have a much higher proportion of shared DNA.

I have looked at Medal Index Cards to note down any belonging to any James B Ferguson's and and Frederick H Ferguson's and then seeing if I can narrow them down further by locating any corresponding records and proving they are not the same men and any who were killed during the war.

I could not find any for any Frederick H Ferguson's - so currently focusing on ones for James B Ferguson. The ones I could not locate a corresponding service, pension or death record for are:

James B Ferguson SN 268244 Private Royal Warwickshire Regt.
James B Ferguson SN 16520 Private Seaforth Highlanders & 548208 Private Labour Corps
James B Ferguson SN S/33088 Private Cameron Highlanders
James B Ferguson SN 2310 & 290512 Private Royal Highlanders
James B Ferguson SN 2053 Private & 250936 2nd Lt Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders

Just wondering if anyone knows if any of these regiments might have been posted near the Maldon area during 1917? My grandmother would have been conceived around Oct/Nov 1917.

My great grandmother would have been in Domestic Service but I know she also did things like seasonal veg picking in the fields, and potentially may have been in the Women's Land Army during the war - but not sure about this. She was born in 1884 so I am erring on the side of her having a relationship with the elder of the two brothers, but of course no idea!

I know that James Brown Ferguson was a Brushmaker by trade and his brother Frederick worked on building and repairing Sewing Machines before the war.

They are both at home in an Electoral Register of Glasgow in 1915 and James was the informant on his father's death certificate on 2nd July 1917 (lived at 36 Hayfield Street, Glasgow).

It is of course possible that none of these medal index cards belong to James Brown Ferguson and it might be possible that my grandmother's father actually wasn't a soldier, but given their occupations I can't really think of other reasons they may have come down to Maldon from Glasgow if not for some posting during the war.

Any suggestions or pointers for information that might help narrow down some information is much appreciated.

Many thanks

Alex

Armed Forces / Help with a possible regiment name
« on: Thursday 06 April 17 11:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I have found on the baptism of twins Abraham and Thomas Martin in Saltwood, Kent, reference to their father Abraham's occupation at the time. There is a note next to them which reads Wy S. Lincoln. Presumably South Lincoln - but want to understand what the Wy means.

There are other entries on other pages with the same reference. I've so far not found any military record for Abraham but I think he was originally from Preston, Rutland born 1777. He married Meliscent/Milliscent Kent in King's Lynn, Norfolk in 1801 - but there were some previous marriage banns read in Uppingham, Rutland in 1800 between him and an Elizabeth Manning - but seems the marriage never took place.

He and Meliscent had their sons in Saltwood - presumably he was stationed at Hythe. Abraham junior was buried there in 1809. In 1815 his wife Meliscent was buried in Uppingham (as Millescina) and he married Margaret Swan there in 1817 and went on to have another son Abraham in 1818 there - he is my partner's 4x great grandfather. Abraham senior's occupation on the baptisms of his children in Uppingham is just down as Labourer.

I've not been able to find a burial record for Abraham, his wife Margaret died in Uppingham in 1845 - also not been able to find her in the 1841 census. (She was born in 1794.) Their last child John was baptised in Uppingham in 1827. Their other children were William b. 1822 d. 1823, Samuel b. 1823 - he joined the Royal Marines and Edward b. 1826 no idea what became of him, and John b. 1827 - also no idea what became of him. Abraham jnr went to Leicester.

Anyway - any help on the regiment will be much appreciated.

TIA - Alex

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Apprenticeship Records - William Wafforn(e) - Sawbridge?
« on: Wednesday 22 February 17 10:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

Wondering if anyone is heading to the Warwickshire Record Office anytime soon who could spare me some time to look up any possible records (indenture etc) for an apprentice by the name of William Wafforn(e)? I have a record of the duties paid from Ancestry & FindMyPast (indenture date 1773 - registration date 1774) with him being apprenticed to John Williams a Tailor of Sawbridge.

I am trying to verify if he was the same William Wafforn(e) who was baptised in April 1762 in Daventry, Northamptonshire - spurious son of the widowed Grace Wafforn(e). I know Grace was Grace Crow who married John Wafforn in Towcester in 1753 and they had a daughter Ann who died in infancy and then a daughter Frances before John died in 1757. Grace went on to marry a Thomas Cook in Daventry in 1773. Frances married Thomas Thaxton in 1776 in Daventry and Thomas Cook died in 1803 and Grace died in 1807. Both buried in Daventry - but not seen any trace of her son William in Daventry - so I'm hopeful he was in Sawbridge area doing his apprenticeship and then moved to Market Harborough.

"My" William married in 1786 in Market Harborough, Leicestershire to Ann Green and was a tailor by trade - and he had a son William the same year - also a tailor and a son Thomas around 1788 (no baptism found as yet for him - they were nonconformists so info is a little patchy) and he was also a tailor. There is a burial in the nonconformist registers in Market Harborough for a Thomas Wafforne in 1790 aged 27 (born around 1763) and I believe this is actually for William and his name has been written incorrectly as a widow Ann Wafforn married in 1791 to Ebenezer Cooke in Market Harborough.

I have been a little confused as I've seen some Land Tax records for Wolfhampcote which is near Sawbridge dating from 1775 to 1783 naming a William Wafforn and I wondered if there was a connection but how feasible is it for a boy of 13 to be paying Land Tax? So unsure if there are two William Wafforn's in the area. I know there is one born 1741 in nearby Welton in Northamptonshire but he seems to have remained in that area.

Any help with finding information about his apprenticeship would be much appreciated!

TIA

Montgomeryshire / Estate Records Coverage - Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant & Rhos y Brithdir
« on: Thursday 20 October 16 12:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

Looking for some advice on what estate(s) might Rhos y Brithdir near Llanfyllin and Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant come under in order to do some research in Estate Records?

My parents live in a converted cow barn in Rhos y Brithdir and wanted to research the history of their house (or at least the farm it was once connected to) and also my father is interested in researching the history of an old mill (now a house) in Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant (which might also be connected to our family). I am conscious that some parts of LyM are considered to be in Denbighshire too, but just wondered if anyone had any ideas of which estates I should be looking for in order to request the records? I am due to look at some estate records in the Powys Records Office next week, but understand the larger estate records are at the National Library of Wales - which my father is keen to go to too.

Any help is much appreciated!

Thank you!

Alex
