Inverness / Macpherson family
« on: Friday 01 May 09 00:13 BST (UK)  »
Dear Chatters,

I was wondering if any one could help me look up these names and check if I have the correct information and maybe if I could find any information on the parents John Roy and Isabella Mackay. I have never researched in Scotland before and am not sure where to start. This information was kindly provided by another lady who is also researching this name and I would like to offer some kind of help back to her.

Donald MacPherson born 1 June 1811 in Lower Cluny, Laggan, Inverness, Scotland. His parents are Iain Ruadh (John Roy) MacPherson (1756) and Isabella Mackay (1756).

Donald MacPherson married Jane Campbell on 18 June 1826, Kingussie and Insh, Scotland.

Jane Campbell was born 25 April 1815 in Dell of Killhuntly, Kingussie, Scotland. Her parents are Donald Campbell and Ann McGregor.

Donald MacPherson departed from London on 14 August 1836 on the 376 tons vessel “Douglas”, arriving in Port Jackson on 6 December 1836.

Thankyou so much for your help
Cheers

Australia / Gunning NSW query
« on: Monday 10 November 08 06:50 GMT (UK)  »
Dear Chatters,

Would anyone out there be from around the Gunning, NSW district. We have just found out that one of our rellies died and was buried there in 1851 ( October) and was wondering if anyone has any cemetary records from that area that might help us. Her name was Mary jemott and she came to NSW from Tasmania in 1847 on the Tory. She died at 73 so I am really interested why a 69 year old widow would travel from Tassie to Gunning Nsw on her own. Her previous name was Mack - maybe there were some relatives there that she went to live with? If anyone knows anything about the Gunning area I would love to hear from you.

Thanks so much for any help.

Armed Forces / Boston USA death records for soldiers
« on: Sunday 12 October 08 04:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi chatters,

I was wondering if anyone out there could tell me how I get the death records for a soldier who died in Boston 15 May 1857. He had previously served in Van Diemens Land Australia and had only just arrived over there (boston) when he died from a long illness. That is what a newspaper orbituary states.  Is there any way of finding out if a particular hospital was used by soldiers during that time in Boston? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Name "Thomas Browne" born around 1812. Wife was Catherine Jemott.  Parents possible Joseph and Mary.

Thank you so much

United States of America / Thomas Browne death in Boston
« on: Saturday 06 September 08 14:14 BST (UK)  »
Dear Chatters,

Is there anyone out there who can help me find out any information about the death of Thomas Browne in Boston, USA 15 May 1857. An obituary states that he died after a lingering illness. I am wondering how I would go about finding his death certificate in USA or even hospital records for that time to see if I can get anymore information about him. He was a soldier and had just arrived in USA from Van Diemens Land in Australia where he had served for 27 years. I am assuming he was still in service ( but could be wrong) as he left behind his wife and many young children.

Thanks for your help

England / Old Bailey Records
« on: Sunday 22 June 08 06:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is any way I can get the court case records for a William Knight Jemott who was trialled at Old Bailey in 1812. I did have an outline of the court case which was very interesting but am not able to locate it. There are two of us researching him and we would both be interested in acquiring the records. I have looked at Old Bailey online but was not able to find the actual court case transcriptions. He was put on trail for piracy. Any information about his trial or anything about him at all would be wonderful.

Also he was married to a lady called Mary Mack. She came out to Australia with him when he was sent here as a convict. If anyone has anything on her also that would be great.

Thanks so much

Canada / soldier -thomas browne
« on: Monday 16 June 08 04:00 BST (UK)  »
Dear Chatters,

I was wondering if anyone could guide me as to how to find a death record for the following:

Lieut-col. Thomas Browne

I have been told that he saw active service in Canada and that he died there in the 1850's ( after 1852). He had been living in Tasmania as a soldier ( deputy comissary) but obviously went to Canada with his regiment???
His wife's name was Catherine Browne ( nee Jemott).

I am sorry but that is all I really know as the information is limited at this end. I can't find any record of him leaving Tasmania ( Van Diemen's Land)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in anticipation - I know it is a common name to try and look up

Cheers

Australia Lookups completed / Tasmanian BROWNE Family - completed
« on: Monday 16 June 08 00:27 BST (UK)  »
Dear Chatters,

I was wondering if someone could please find the births ( and possible deaths) for the following children. I found this information on the Colonial Tasmanian Family Links database but there are some discrepencies with the information I have so I would like to get the actual birth certificates.

17711  BROWNE MARY AUGUSTA 1842
17710 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              1842 17710      end_of_the_skype_highlighting  BROWNE KATHERINE FRANCES 1843
17709  BROWNE JOSEPH STEERE 1845
17707  BROWNE M 1847  ( I believe this is Marriot)
17708  BROWNE FREDERICK WILLIAM 1847
17706  BROWNE PHILIP JOHN 1850
17705  BROWNE JAMES ERNEST 1852 ( I have him as James Arthur on all other records, including marriage certificate)

The parents are Thomas Browne and Catherine Jemott ( I have made previous postings about the Jemott family)

Also if anyone could help me with shipping records for this family leaving Tasmania in the late 1850's to go to Queensland I would love to find them. Again we are trying to sort out conflicting stories. I am under the belief that the family went to Queensland after the father Thomas Browne died in Canada ( he was a soldier in active duty there) but there is the possibility that this information is not correct and that Thomas Browne actually went to Queensland with the family. Either way the family actually ended up in Queensland around this time.

Please help - I am confused. ??? ;)

Cheers

Australia Lookups completed / James Horne - soldier
« on: Thursday 05 June 08 13:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I am looking to find any information I can on James Horne who married Sarah Sterling in USA. He settled ultimately in Victoria where he died and I have his death certifcate which states he died in 1890 and at this time he had been in Victoria for about 30 years and Tasmania previous to that for about 5-6 years. On his wifes death certificate in 1865 she states that they had been in Victoria for 12 years and 7 years prior to that in Tasmania. i ahve managed to find some of his children having been born in Tasmania between 1845 and 1850 but the son that I am related to was born in 1843. I am actually wondering if there are any shipping records for this family having come out from USA? England? across from Tasmania to Victoria? He was a soldier so I am assuming that he came over here with his regiment 96th Foot Regiment. He left the regiment whilst living in Victoria. Can any one help please. I have had a look at the shipping records I know are available online but that is as far as I can go and I have had no luck. ( I am still learning this whole thing).

Thank you for your help
