England / Missing Marriage Record - Stewart - 1860s
« on: Saturday 11 June 16 11:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm not sure which board to post this on, because I'm not sure where the marriage took place.  But I thought I'd start here,  because I have other documents placing one spouse in the London area.

I'm trying to find a marriage between Walter Stewart and Catherine  (nee Birmingham /Bermingham ) that would have happened before 1871... likely somewhere between 1861 and 1871.

I have no details at all about Walter Stewart. Not even an estimated birth date.

Catherine's father was a Walter Birmingham. Occupation: Farrier.
I don't know her birthplace,  but estimated birth date is 1843.

Catherine was widowed sometime before 1871, and remarried in 1871 under "Catherine Stewart" to a William J Menelly.  At this point she was living in London  (St George Hanover Square area).

I have searched and searched for the marriage between Catherine and Walter Stewart but can't find anything.
There don't appear to be any records of a Catherine Birmingham marrying anyone with the surname Stewart.

I have searched Irish records as best I can, as there is the possibility that she was Irish.

Catherine and Walter had a son named Henry Stewart.  He may have been born in 1867. I have no idea where.

Catherine's name may have been spelled Catharine.

If anyone knows how to track this marriage down,  I would be really grateful for the help.

Thank you

Emma

Europe / Austrian Family History Research
« on: Wednesday 27 April 16 02:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'd like to do more research into the Austrian branch of my family tree.
I have some information on family members names, but dates of birth/death etc are very sketchy.

There don't seem to be any Austrian records on Ancestry yet.

Does anyone know if there are any Austrian BDM records online at all?

Is there somewhere else on roots chat that I could post specific enquiries?

I also don't speak German. But I could use a translator tool.

Thank you
Emma

Armed Forces / Military Records - 5th Lancers
« on: Wednesday 20 April 16 00:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find military records for Henry Stewart - army number 2723 - who was a staff sergeant farrier with the 5th lancers in the late 1800s.

I'm really looking for any records that show his birthplace, enlistment date, military travel with family etc.

I'm happy to order these records from somewhere but I don't know where to get them from.

I've searched online for him, and have had some help on here previously too.

I know that Henry died in 1900 in South Africa during the Boer War.
I know he was definitely in India with the regiment from 1894 to at least 1897 as he was married there and had children there.
But I don't know when he went to India or when he left.

I know he has a clasp and is mentioned on a plaque in Dublin?

But I really have no idea of his nationality or even a definite birthdate.

I have no idea of his parentage - except that his father was possibly named Walter Stewart.

Any help with how to track down his records would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Armed Forces / 64th Regiment
« on: Wednesday 27 January 16 08:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone give me any information about the "64th Regiment".

This name appears on a marriage certificate in the late 1800s. The groom has listed his father's occupation as being "Captain of the 64th Regiment"

What was this regiment? Where were they based?

Thank you!  :)

England / John & Jane Tillyer - after 1861
« on: Monday 25 January 16 09:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi  :)
I'm trying to find out what happened to John Tillyer and his wife Jane after 1861. They appear to vanish,  and I cannot find any trace of them on a census or any death record matching them.

John was born John Charles Tillyer in Bedfont, Middlesex in 1833 - son of William Tillyer and Elizabeth.
He was the youngest of several children.
There were several Tillyer families in that area it seems, and the surname is often mis-spelt as Tillier or Tyllier... amongst others - which makes things a little confusing.

I can find John aged 7 on the 1841 census living in the Bedfont area with his parents and some older siblings.
In 1851 he is in the Midlands in the Warwickshire area with his brother William, staying with his eldest sister.
In 1861, he is in Aston, Warwickshire as a lodger - married to Jane.
Then... nothing.

I can't find any marriage record for John and Jane.

Jane is listed as being born in 1833 in Broom, Warwickshire on the 1861 census.

A couple of John's elder siblings did move to the Birmingham area and raise families there. The rest of his siblings and parents stayed in the Bedfont/Feltham area.

Any help with census records after 1861 or death records would be much appreciated.

Thank you  :) :)

Hi,

Wondered if someone could help me on how best to continue my research on a couple in my family tree.

Caroline Tillyer (b. 1820 in Bedfont, Middlesex) - daughter of William Tillyer and Elizabeth.
Married a John Williamson (b. 1814 in Ilkeston, Derbyshire).

According to records I've found, they married in 1858 in Birmingham.
Several of Caroline's siblings had moved to the Birmingham area, and later census docs have Caroline and John living next to her siblings. One of Caroline's sisters is also a witness at her marriage.

The thing that is confusing is that on the 1861 census, 3 years after their marriage, there are two children listed -
John Williamson (b. Abt 1848 in St Martins, London) and Emily Williamson (b. Abt 1852 in London)

Since the children were born several years before the marriage, I assumed that perhaps they were John Williamson's children from a previous marriage.
But on the marriage certificate, John Williamson senior is listed as a "bachelor" not a widower... Which I suppose means he could have divorced....??

The children live with them until they either get married (Emily) or the parents die.

Emily is listed on her marriage certificate as "Emily Caroline Williamson" and her father as "John Williamson"

So, my question is... Could they be John and Caroline's children born illegitimately? With the parents only marrying almost 10 years later... Or are they likely to be the children of just one parent?
How common was it in the mid 1850s to have children outside of a marriage?

I can't seem to find birth certificates for either child to help me

Nor can I find Caroline Tillyer listed anywhere on 1841 and 1851 census.

I may have found John Williamson senior in 1851 census, and he seems to be in the army and listed as single.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

England / William John Menelly - 1881 UK census - missing
« on: Wednesday 18 March 15 11:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have been searching for William John Menelly on the 1881 Uk census but cannot find him.

I believe he was born in Ireland - around 1843... Though not exact.

I think he was living in England in 1881 - possibly in the London area - with his wife Catherine. She was born in the 1840s I think but I don't know where.
They were married in 1871 in London

I have found their two daughters - Edith Jane Menelly and Elizabeth Menelly - living in Essex in the 1881 census. Apparently at a boarding school.

I know William and Catherine are still living in 1881... And can find William on later census.

Can you help?

Thank you

Armed Forces / 5th Irish Lancers
« on: Wednesday 18 March 15 10:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

This may be a stupid question, but, if someone was a sergeant in the 5th Irish Lancers in the la
1890s... Would they have to have been born in Ireland in order to enlist with the Irish lancers?
Would they need to have Irish parentage?

Thank you

Wondering if someone could help me with something....

If a person was stationed in India from 1846 until his death in 1895, and was first listed as being an Engineer or miner in the Department of Public Works, then given a ranking of honorary captain in the DPW, and then at his death listed as a "retired captain, royal engineers"....does this mean he was in the army or not?
Was the department of public works military in India?

The person I am trying to trace is a Frederick Graham (born around 1820 - although not exact) - posted to India around 1846, and was there until his death.

I am trying to work out what exactly he was doing in India, and whether he would have spent time back in England during those years or not.

I can't seem to find an army record for him on findmypast.... The only documents I have found are from 1872 relating to him being given honorary ranking, plus various baptism and marriage records of his children.
