Berkshire / Henry & Ellen WESTALL at Highclere 1901 Census
« on: Thursday 21 March 19 12:04 GMT (UK)  »
To assist researchers who fell into the trap of attributing the following to the WESTALL family at Kingsclere Dell, Hampshire, these references are significant:

2Q 1896   Henry WESTELL    =  Ellen ILSLEY   Newbury 2C 495

1901 Census  - Siddown Warren Cottages, Highclere   RG13 1118 folio 79 page 9
Infant   WESTALL   Dau   under 1 month   1901   -      Highclere, Hampshire

WESTELL, Winifred Mary       Mother's Maiden Name: ILSLEY
GRO Reference: 1901 J Quarter in KINGSCLERE Volume 02C Page 243

In the 1939 Register the parents: Ellen [recorded Nellie WESTELL] is with her daughter Nellie NYE at Crookham;  Henry [recorded WESTALL] is alone at Wokingham, both shown as married. His likely death registration followed: Jun 1942 recorded Henry WESTALL 77 Wokingham 2c 671.

Their 1911 Census entries proved the most elusive but are found at Bath Road, Beenham, Berkshire, by pursuing the origins of Pte Henry James WESTELL, Service No 18962, 1st Bn Royal Berkshire Regt, died 15 Nov 1916, commemorated at Thiepval Memorial.  Sadly, he's not been claimed by anybody on the CWGC website.

Staffordshire / Ann DAINTY - Elusive Marriage 1830
« on: Wednesday 25 July 18 17:43 BST (UK)  »
Circa 1992 two polite postal enquiries, with SAEs, received no response from the incumbent of Barton-under-Needwood for a look-up for a marriage c1830 between John HOLMES and Ann DAINTY, for which I would happily have paid a fee. After years on the 'back-burner', imagine my delight when I recently encountered images on-line at FindMyPast:

Barton-under-Needwood Marriage in the Chapel by Banns ... John Latham, Offg Minister.
01 Jun 1830     John HOLMES    (sgd)    otp    Bachelor
No 79                Ann DAINTY        (sgd)   otp    Spinster
Witnesses:        Mary HANSEN    (sgd) &  William DAINTY    (sgd)

Banns had been called at Barton-under-Needwood and Yoxall parishes but it appears on Ancestry there are some researchers who have risked hazardous guesses.    ::)

Is there SKS in a position to look up an obituary for the William WESTALL buried 14 Feb 1880 at Newtown  Road Cemetery, please?  I believe he was the character who undertook the physical demands of the 1869 'Beating of the Bounds' ceremony and the likely father of the young WESTALL lad fished out alive from the canal after the ice broke in Dec 1870.

Berkshire Completed Look ups / Newbury St Nicolas Baptisms - LEWIS
« on: Monday 06 March 17 15:13 GMT (UK)  »
Could SKS please see if the baptism for Sarah LEWIS features in the PR c1803?

This may be her family unit in Toomer's Census at West Mills 31 May 1815:
LEWIS, Francis   47   born c1768
LEWIS, Sarah   48   born c1767
LEWIS, Joseph    19   born c1796
LEWIS, James   17   born c1798
LEWIS, Sarah   12   born c1803 [likely bride of Wm WESTALL 16 May 1820]
HOLLISTER, John   Carter

Sarah junr, a minor, married with consent of parents, and the groom provided a very confident signature, but there were no obvious family witnesses to the ceremony.

This is a possible marriage for the parents by Licence at Hamstead Marshall:
07 Jan 1791 Francis LEWIS   of Newbury = Sarah MIEL or MIAL of Hamstead Marshall.

I think it likely the couple suffered infant mortalities, including an earlier Sarah buried aged 13 wks in 1800, but the baptisms are the key to establishing the extent of the family.  Any assistance will be very gratefully received.

Extracts  from Taunton Courier 21 Nov 1838 reporting upon two coroner's inquests:

Eliza RAYNER sworn._ Belongs to the Isle of Wight;  on Friday evening I came by the Defiance coach from Exeter, an outside passenger, sitting on the hinder part of the coach with my back towards the horses, the guard was sitting in the opposite direction;  I did not notice any conversation between the coachman and guard, the guard was perfectly sober and very attentive; I only noticed the coachman at Exeter, before I got on the coach;  the guard complained of the fog on the road, and repeatedly said, he hoped the fog would soon pass away.

Mrs. RAYNER, who was severely hurt in her back, will, it is expected, be able to resume her journey in a day or two.

The unfortunate Mrs. RAYNER is the widow of a coast-blockadesman who has recently died in Ireland;  she was with her two children on the coach journeying to the Isle of Wight, but is now detained at the George Inn by the late accident, where every comfort is bestowed, and attention paid her and the children by Mr. LOARING, until she can proceed on her journey:  happily the children, one nine, the other seven years of age, escaped unhurt.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Marriage at Padworth?
« on: Saturday 09 August 14 09:07 BST (UK)  »
In 2010 I purchased extracts from the BFHS Berkshire Marriage Index amongst which was this:

WESTAL William/Sophia CLARK by Licence.
Date & Place:   02 Sep 1788, Padworth.

Sadly, the kind souls who endeavoured to locate the original record for me in the bride's Padworth PR and the groom's Wallingford PR were unsuccessful, but it has recently come to my attention via  http://archive.org/search.php?query=padworth [A record of the parish of Padworth pp 72-77] and the BRO catalogue that the likely source was the transcription of the BTs for Padworth St John Baptist in the BRO Searchroom.

If SKS is likely to be visiting the BRO in the near future, I'd be indebted for a look-up and extraction of the details.  The ceremony would have been conducted during a significant gap 1755-1813 in the Padworth Marriages PRs.

Gloucestershire / Marriage of Somersetshire Giantess - Miss Agnes ......?
« on: Tuesday 17 December 13 08:51 GMT (UK)  »
In the 'Notes & Queries' columns of the Taunton Courier of 08 April 1950 'Tauntonian' stated:
'Miss Agnes Weston, a giantess, exhibited at Bristol Fair and elsewhere also came from Miss Hold's vicinity - from Norton, near Crewkerne. She was married to Mr. J. Cook in 1817.’
However, contemporary 1817 newspaper reports record Miss Agnes LAWRENCE, giantess, as the bride of Mr J. COOK, so could some kind soul please extract details from the Marriage Register for Bristol St James 28 Aug 1817 John COOK/Agnes LAWRENCE, a minor?

The marriage reports stated that the bride was a native of Norton, near Crewkerne, but in subsequent lavish advertisements for her exhibitions, the place of birth of 'the celebrated Mrs COOK' was claimed to have been Merriott, with an inferred date of birth 01 Oct 1800.

Strange to say, I've yet to find a likely baptism for the lady in either surname in Somerset.  ::)
