Cumberland Lookup Requests / Alston: Martins c1765
« on: Thursday 16 February 17 13:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. Looking to find any more info on my 5x GGM please. She married at ‘Lanchester Church (Durham): All Saints Denomination: Anglican 26 Dec 1791 William Cowper (Cooper) married Alice Martin’. A few of their children’s baptisms state Alice was native of Alston Cumberland, daughter of Joseph and one mentions a mother Alice. I’m pleased to have gotten that much info, but anything more on the Martin’s will be a bonus! So can anyone access Alston records please? Thanks.
A couple of the children’s baptism records:

Location: Lanchester
Church: All Saints
Denomination: Anglican
19 Oct 1794 Margaret Cowper of Kyo town, daughter of William & Alice Cowper

Location: Lanchester

Name Mordass / Mordaff / Mordue conundrum
I can’t decide if my 4xGGM c1781 was named Isabel Mordass / Mordaff or Mordue. (Firstly, as far as I know, the cursive script for ‘ss’ looks like a long f then a normal f, or two long f’s so I use it as Mordass, but find some other transcriptions are written as Mordaff). From Family Search and the handwritten Bishop’s records I have a baptism for her 22 July 1781 Busty Bank Tanfield to Jacob Mordass and Isabel Smails. Her 6 siblings are spelt Mordass too.

The problem then lies with her marriage to Thomas Atkinson b1777 of Lintz, Tanfield.  First, I found two likely records via  Family Search as follows (both Mordaff):

Name:   Thomas Atkinson
Spouse's Name:   Isabel Mordaff
Event Date:   22 Feb 1803
Event Place:   Tanfield,Durham,England
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: M00082-1 , System Origin: England-ODM , GS Film number: 91138, 91140

Thos. Atkinson MARRIAGE b
mentioned in the record of Thos. Atkinson and Isabel Mordaff
Name:   Thos. Atkinson
Spouse's Name:   Isabel Mordaff
Event Date:   31 Jul 1803
Event Place:   Tanfield,Durham,England
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: M00082-1 , System Origin: England-ODM , GS Film number: 91138, 91140 ,

And this one on an Ancestry search:
Name:   Isabel Mordaff
Gender:   Female
Marriage Date:   22 Feb 1803
Marriage Place:   Tanfield,Durham,England
Spouse:   Thomas Atkinson
FHL Film Number:   91138, 91140

I looked at the Tanfield Bishop’s handwritten church records via FS to see if I could find these two records of different dates, but there is only the one for the July 31st with names Thomas Atkinson and Isabel MorDUE. I couldn’t see a one for 22 Feb. I notice both the above FS results show the same index and film numbers and names (Mordaff), just different dates – the 31 July date matches the Bishop’s handwritten record except the name there is Mordue! I checked on Durham Records Online and got:
Marriages, Lanchester District - Record Number: 181251.1
Location: Tanfield
Church: St. Margaret
Denomination: Anglican
31 Jul 1803 Thomas Atkinson married Isabel Mordass

So I’m thinking it’s Mordass. HOWEVER, their future 6 children from 1804 – 1815 in Tanfield show the mother is named as Mordue on the Bishop’s records, Ancestry and DRO that show the mother’s maiden name. *A double check on FS showed I had missed additional members of their family because the Tanfield church record images online, years 1808 to 1812 are missing, so I initially missed 3 of their children.
I couldn’t find any children for Mordass c1803 – 1815 to those parents. Therefore is her name Mordue? Or did the scribers just spell it differently? Importantly for my understanding of all index records, are the two FS index numbers the same because they are the same person or were there two similar marriages and I just can’t find one? Could Mordue sound like Mordeux (s)??  AAAArghhhh!!!
Can anyone find a marriage for 22 Feb 1803 Tanfield other than the FS record in case I’ve missed it please? Thanks.

Northumberland / Northumberland: Leamington or Lemington or other?
« on: Tuesday 08 March 16 23:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Q: Where is Leamington Northumberland please?

I‘m on the hunt for my 4x GGM. Her first name is Isabella c1808 Leamington Northumberland and I have the 1841 to 1871 censuses (and a possible 1881 if the birth place was written wrongly). On the 1841 her place of birth is Durham. In 1851 it’s Northumberland, on the 1861 and 1871 it’s Leamington Northumberland. (1881 matches the family but says Darlington which I wonder could be wrong with the cursive style). Her husband was William Turnbull c1796 of Brandon Durham and they lived Chester le Street / Ouston / Urpeth. The children start abt 1832 with, I believe, the first son Thomas born Ouston. None of the children’s baptisms of those I found give Isabella’s maiden name. Searching for a likely marriage for William & Isabella brings up a variety mid 1825s with her name possibly Cowins, Parker, Trotter and Lambert – or other! So I was thinking of trying to find baptisms for such an Isabella in this place Leamington, but I can’t even find Leamington Northumberland on a map. Could it be Lemington? I’m about to trawl the transcripts for Newburn where Lemington appears, but before I do am I missing another place that could be Leamington please? Thanks C

View Record
Name   Thomas Sawkill
Gender   Male
Marriage Date   12 Mar 1860
Marriage Place   Christ Church, Tynemouth, Northumberland, England
FHL Film Number   1068930
Reference ID   2:3DXTSKW
Household Members   Name   Age
Thomas Sawkill
Margaret Clark

As I understand it, Margaret Clark nee Wright b1831 was abandoned by her first husband Robert Clark, as he went to America without her. Divorce was almost impossible then,  and I believe she had to wait 6 or 7 years to be declared a widow as she never heard from him again, then she could remarry. So I have found the above record but I’m wondering if there’s anything on the record copy / transcript ?? other than the above information. If it’s possible for a photo of the image for my tree I’d be ecstatic!
I have never found anything on the birth of this Thomas either, other than the 1861 census stating Thomas Sarkle b abt 1821 Newcastle upon Tyne and the 1871 census stating b abt 1818 Newcastle, but I don’t think the marriage would throw up further clues. Thank you in advance.
