Other Countries / route from st helena to uk?
« on: Monday 11 May 15 20:33 BST (UK) »
I have ancestors born on St Helena who I know ended up in the UK but have no idea how.
Has anyone any idea by what route they could have travelled to the UK? I assume it would be by boat so I’m hoping I may find some passenger lists for the following time scale.
My great grandfather was Josiah Thomas PURLE who was born on St Helena in about 1853. He married in Southampton in 1876, so I assume he travelled by boat to that port a while before then. (He was a ships steward on the 1891 census.)
His father was William John PURLE born in St Helena and married Caroline EDDLESTONE in 1852 on St Helena. William died in Colchester in 1890 and she died in Cardiff in 1910. The first census I can find for Caroline is the 1891 in Colchester.
I am also trying to discover if the PURLE and/or EDDLESTONE family originated in the UK.
Also does anyone know if there any online sources available, free or payable, for census for the Island?
If anyone can help I would be most grateful.
