London & Middlesex Resources / London Sites for Family History
« on: Friday 23 March 18 22:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Have just found out that my sister will be visiting England next month. She is hoping to be able to fill in some blanks on our family that will require her to visit several locations and has no idea where to go or what she might need to do to gain access to documents.  She will be staying in central London and will only be there for a week.
Am hoping that one of you might be able to direct us to the right place and have identified the following interests and sites I saw on the internet.
Wills, Probate, Death Certificates, Voter Lists and other documents (the wills were probated in London, the deaths occurred there also and the residence is located in SE Dulwich )
1. Property ownership-1920 through 1975
    Land Registry, Telford
    Croyden
2. National Archives, Kew
Thought I had this figured out but after further reading of items located at the National Archives, I find that they do not have wills after 1858 nor do they have birth, marriage/death certificates so I am not sure where these might be housed. Not sure if this location would be worth the time for what we are seeking.
3. London Metropolitan Archives
   40 Northampton Road
   Clerkenwell

Specifically looking for:
Home ownership 1920 through 1975
Voter lists after 1970
Death certificate-1975
Probate of wills, 1956, 1962 and 1974

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / Am I still a Beginner/Replies to messages
« on: Friday 17 November 17 20:50 GMT (UK)  »
Good Afternoon all,
I am going to show my ignorance at how this all works.
This will be my 4Th post and I am amazed that I have progressed this far.  I have read that after 3 postings you are allowed to stop using the Beginners Board.  Do I get notified that I can start using other boards or am I supposed to know that.....
Also, as I have responded to several of the messages I have received, I am not sure of the different, if any, in a Quick Reply and a Reply.  Both are options at the bottom of the page but neither tells me why to use one or the other.  I hope this makes sense.
Which brings up another concern.  Yes, I can be obsessive at times!  Is it preferred to respond to every message I get?  I do not wish to appear rude as I appreciate all the information, personal experiences, etc., but also do not want to take up anyone's time.  If I say Thank You, will they respond with You're Welcome........????
I was raised by a very proper British mother and an Italian father, who was a career military officer.  I was raised to respect, obey and never assume anything. Does it show?

Family History Beginners Board / Powick Asylum, Was She Abandoned?
« on: Thursday 16 November 17 20:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,
My Grandfather was married to a lady who was a patient at Powick Lunatic Asylum.  She died there in December of 1920.  Her cause of death is given as "Fatty degeneration of the heart, duration unknown". She was only 48.
Would this be a reason to be institutionalized, or could it have accompanied another condition that put her there in the first place?  My Mother had a great fear of phsyciatric hospitals and used to tell me that they did horrible things to her father's first wife, so I think she was there for some time and for other reasons.
Also, on the Entry of Death, under Occupation, it gives the home address and the following:  Ada Phillips, Wife of _________Phillips.  Is there a reason why the spouse's given name is blank?  Have read a number of articles on Asylums' at this time but have not encountered anything that would explain how the families of these unfortunate's dealt with the stigma, or how society in general reacted.
I read an old post from 2006 from someone who contacted the Worcestershire Library and History Centre(where these records are held) for assistance in his own search. He provided an email address of:       WLHC@worcestershire.gov.uk
I sent an email and it was returned "Address not found"  I have searched and none of the sites I found have an email address nor can I find a mailing address.
Traveling from the states would cost more than anything they could charge me for hard copies of her patient records, if they are available. Any suggestions?

Family History Beginners Board / Who owned the house? London, East Dulwich
« on: Saturday 11 November 17 03:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All.
Am hoping that one of you can direct me in my search to find records on property ownership for my Grandparents' home.  Located in London, England. East Dulwich to be exact.
My Grandfather died in 1955 and we received a letter from Grandma telling us that she was going to see the Solicitor to get 'the house in her name'.  This suggested to me that they indeed owned the property.
When Grandma died in 1962, we arrived from the states several months later and stayed with the family while my Father reported for duty in Germany.  During the time we were there, Mom and her Uncle discussed the usual details that occur after a death.  The big one was the house.  Mom always said she gave the property to her Uncle because it was not worth much  and he would only be able to live there several years. Something about the lease expiring.
Years later I did some research and determined that the original leases on the properties in that area were for 99 years. At the end of the lease, the property would revert to the crown. The homes would not be worth purchasing as there would have a limited amount of time to reside there.  Since we were talking about 1962, it seemed to fit the information I read. But then I get confused about the ownership rights of Leasehold(house) verses Freehold(land).  In the States when you own a home, you always own the property on which it sits. Please correct my information if it is inaccurate.
However, some critical information was not given to my Mother, or she did not understand it.  In the early 1960's there was a lot of fear amongst some of the older residents that they might be forced out of their homes with no place to live.  Discussions were held that indicated that these leases might be extended for an additional 100+ years. This would have allowed older residents to stay in their homes or sell for a decent price.  Indeed, I think the law changed around 1967.
Recently, upon connecting with one of the family members after 50 years, they have told me I am wrong but can't or won't tell me why.
Would there be records that are available that would show who owned the home during this time period? (around 1920-1975) That is a broad time period but would cover the years that a family member occupied the home.  Could they be viewed on-line?

I have found several possible death records on BMD but since very little personal information is given I am not certain that I am looking at the right people.

Sarah Ann Phillips(child)- Death Sep. 1861- District-Aston, Vol. 6d, Page 164 -No age listed
John Phillips-Death Sept.1883-District-Aston, Vol. 6d, Page 232-Age 56
Sarah A. Phillips-Death Dec. 1910-District-Aston, Vol 6d, Page 208-Age 82

Also have George Frederick's Christening date as Dec. 12, 1873 Warwickshire, Birmingham but no names of his parents.

Any help would be appreciated, living in the US makes visiting the area difficult) Wish I had known all these things as a child when I visited family in Birmingham and London frequently.
