Australia / Grace Smith BELL
« on: Tuesday 13 August 13 09:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone!

A request for help with a birth registration number: Grace Smith BELL was born , I believe, about 1860 in Heathcote, Victoria. I would like to purchase a copy of her birth certificate, so would appreciate help to find the appropriate registration number please.

I have the registration number for her death, and am led to believe she never married.

Cheers

Australia / Ruth BETTS Kadina South Australia
« on: Tuesday 02 October 12 14:23 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

Ruth BETTS, who was born in 11 Jul 1912, died in Kadina South Australia on the 22nd July 1912 aged 100 years.

Being of such age, I suspect a local newspaper might have written an article recognising her centenary and / or an obituary on her death.

I would welcome help to find any article/s that refer to Ruth please.

Cheshire / LEANE family Birkenhead?
« on: Friday 28 September 12 06:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello !

On the 1871 census (Family Search)  I have found Margaret LEANE, who was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire. Margaret's age is given as 22 and she is identified as the niece of Margaret JONES of Oswestry, Shropshire.

I would appreciate help to find any information on Margaret and her family. I thought the censuses for 1841 and 1851 might provide some clues, but am unable to access them.

Hello!

Beulah Park is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. I am interested to know, if possible, the origins of the name for this suburb.

How do I proceed in this search?

I would welcome any advice, or information, please.

Perthshire / Scrymgour and Campbell families
« on: Saturday 01 September 12 06:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

Duncan CAMPBELL married Kat in Mar 1816 in Killen, Perth. (IGI)
Alexander CAMPBELL was born 4th April 1819 in Logierait and here the mother's name is identified as Kath Scrymgour and his father as Duncan CAMPBELL. (IGI)

I am taking that leap of faith that Kat and Kath are one and the same person.

My challenge is to try to prove that I am linking to the correct family.

This is the information from which I started: Alexander CAMPBELL married Ann SHARP in St Cuthberts, Edidburgh in Dec 1839. On the 1841 census Alexander's place of birth is given as outside census county. He dies sometime around 1846 when his fourth child is born and the 1851 census as Ann, his wife, is identified as a widow. On this census, though, Ann's birthplace is given as Comrie, Perth. The other fact I have from the 1841 census is that Alexander's father Duncan CAMPBELL , aged 50 and a farmer, also born outside the census county is there with them in Edinburgh.

My theory and leap of faith is that it is a possibility that Alexander and Duncan also came from Perthshire and possibly close to Comrie. The information I have found on the IGI is the closest I have been able to find as possibilities. Dates fit quite comfortably.

How can I substantiate or eliminate that theory?

Hello from Australia!

I am trying to research the military history of HERBERT JOHN JONES.

Having tried unsuccessfully to find him in Australian military records, I widened my search and found the following information in "The Register," a South Australian newspaper. (Thurs 20 Jun 1918. p7)

"Sergeant Herbert Jones was born at Riverton ...... and took part in the South African War. He was there when the first shot was fired and afterwards went to England. He landed there on Mafeking Day and joined the English Naval Brigade. He also took part in the war against the Mad Mullah and returned to Australia. The deceased went to New Zealand, where he married. He sailed as an engineer with the second contingent to Gallipoli, joined an expedition to Persia and was invalided to India and England."

At the time of his death, Herbert (Bert) on April 30, 1918,  was said to be serving with the Royal British Engineers.

Quite some military involvement over a number of years!

How and where do I begin to try to find any records for Bert? I would appreciate any help, advice or words of wisdom as I embark on this aspect of my research about him.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Help requested to find Herbert John JONES
« on: Sunday 12 August 12 16:49 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to find the marriage of Herbert John JONES in New Zealand.

After searching "Trove" I found the following..."The deceased (Herbert) went to reside in New Zealand where he married. He sailed as an engineer with the ? (illegible) contingent to Gallipoli...."

I would suggest that the marriage was sometime between 1903 and 1914. Herbert fought in the Boer War before going to New Zealand to live. He was born in Riverton, South Australia in 1881.

I am assuming also that he enlisted in New Zealand as I cannot find records for him in the Australian National Records database. Help to find his military records would also be appreciated.

With a smile  :D

Montgomeryshire / Roberts family Meifod
« on: Monday 30 July 12 15:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello from Australia!

I would appreciate help with researching the family of Thomas and Frances ROBERTS.

On the IGI I have found that all their children were born in Meifod between the years of 1817 and 1836. (Rowland Thomas, Frances, Mary Shaw, Elinor, William, Caroline, Charles, Henry, Henry, Emily, Clara, Rosanna and Edward.)

On the 1871 census as noted by the IGI Thomas ROBERTS was born in Llanfechan and his wife Frances in Straud, London.

Is it possible to track this family through any other censuses?

I would also like to try and find the parents of Thomas Roberts, again if possible.

This is my first tenative step into undertaking any research in Wales, and I would be grateful for any advice or assistance.

With a smile

Elsie
