Travelling People / James Arkinstall showman
« on: Wednesday 25 February 09 14:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Does anyone have any information, or point me the right way, on James Arkinstall b1872, Wellington, Shropshire. He was described as a 'Showman'. Although not directly related , he was a stepson to my great grandfather William Ball from Dawley, Shropshire. My cousin seems to remember him or his son at Welshpool about 1940's.

Thanks,
Pilly

Family History Beginners Board / Assuming another surname.
« on: Wednesday 25 February 09 12:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
This is the scenario...
Elizabeth S, an unmarried woman had a few illegitimate children, from c1835 -1850.
In 1861 she was the only adult lodger in the household of Joseph G, a widower, she was still recorded as unmarried. There were two children there, both with her surname. One of them, Joseph S, was born in 1855 at the same address as her lodgings with Joseph G. In 1862 Joseph G and Elizabeth S were married.

My question is, would it be reasonable, or not, to suppose that Joseph G would have been the father of Joseph S? And more importantly, would Joseph S have taken Joseph G's surname at a future date? He was still Joseph S in 1871. After that Joseph S appears to vanish and Joseph G junior appears out of the blue. I know not to assume anything in family research, but I can't source Joseph G junior from anywhere else.
I hope this makes sense and would welcome any comments.

The Lighter Side / A Relative Problem
« on: Friday 20 February 09 12:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm sure this topic has been aired a few times.
I recently had a GR contact with quite a few positives.
We exchanged trees, like you do? Suddenly this GR contact
went to the top of my Hot Match table with 75...all in a day!
That's what I call research. But this contact, amazingly, has
over 10,000 relations, compared to my mere 600 ( a lot of these
are really distant ).
He or she has just copied 75 of my relatives at a stroke, including
some of my obvious typos, and possible mistakes.
I'm sure this happens a lot, but 10,000 relations! imagine the Christmas
card list for those still here.

That's off my chest,
Pilly

A young relative died there , but it wasn't his home address.

Thank you,

Family History Beginners Board / Not sure of Death Index Page Number. RESOLVED.
« on: Thursday 25 September 08 11:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
FREE BMD  can't make out the page number on a death index entry. FREE BMD has [95] 0,  I guess either 90or a 50.  I can't make it out from the scan either.
Could anyone tell me how would I order this cert from the GRO , do I give them both options ?
Hopiing someone can advise.
Thanks,
Pilly

The Common Room / Register Office marriages.
« on: Wednesday 06 August 08 15:32 BST (UK)  »
On a marriage that was carried out in a Register Office, the words 'by certificate before me' appear before the registrar's signature. What information would have been on this certificate and would witnesses have been required? Was a fee payable and like banns, did some set time have to elapse before the marriage?
The time period in question is 1891 Wales.
Questions probably asked many times, but hope someone can enlighten me, I may have a mystery to solve.
Thanks in advance,
Pilly

Armed Forces / 37th Regiment movements.
« on: Wednesday 18 April 07 14:45 BST (UK)  »
My G Grandfather Henry Belton was married at Aldershot in 1863. He was described as 'Serjt. in 37th regt'.
I can't find him in 1871 or 1881 census in England, Scotland or Wales. I know he was at Greenlaw Military Prison, Scotland in 1874 & 1876,  as my Grandmother and a sibling are born there. He is described then as a 'Military Prison Warder'. Is it possible that he was not in the country, having been posted abroad? If so where would I find the movements
of the 37th Regiment  for that period and would his wife/children have been with him?
Hoping someone can point me in the right direction, as you have before.
Thanks in advance.

Family History Beginners Board / Married or unmarried?
« on: Thursday 14 September 06 13:49 BST (UK)  »
In a census if the Head has a different surname than the Wife and she is described as unmarried, who's wife is she, if at all? Or is it just a slip of the pen?
