World War Two / Frank Dallas Owen and headstone/service record information
« on: Monday 03 April 17 01:02 BST (UK)  »
Hello
Frank Dallas Owen born in Melbourne Victoria Australia 1912 was naturalized in 1936 in California. He is buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery. He died 1965.
Information on his headstone is:
Frank Dallas Owen
Australia
Lieutenant
2 Major Port TC
World War 2
August 29 1912
July 5 1965
ARCOM
Can anyone tell me what the 2 major port TC and ARCOM are related to.
I have read that many US military files were lost in a fire - if I can't find further info on Frank would it be reasonable to think that his records no longer exist?
Thank you  :)

Armed Forces / Daniel McCrohan - 17th & 73rd Regiment of Foot
« on: Monday 05 October 15 06:53 BST (UK)  »
I have attached a copy of the entry for Daniel in the Regimental Registers of Pensioners for the 17th Foot that indicates he died 28/2/1862 however having looked up the BDM indexes for England and Ireland I can't find an entry for him in either one. What do the letters and numbers that follow his date of death mean and could they lead to a location of his death.

I have found that he was alive and living in St George the Martyr in Finsbury in 1851 with his wife Mary (1851 Census). His daughter's death certificate in 1858 indicates he was still alive (she died in Sydney NSW).

Daniel did suffer from periods of insanity and was one of the reasons he was discharged in 1827. He sustained a head injury whilst fighting at Waterloo. If his condition deteriorated would he have admitted to an asylum and would this have been recorded in his army records or the pensioner records?

I look forward to any thoughts/suggestions that you may have to this puzzle.
cheers
Suzee

I have searched Familysearch, RootsIreland and Irish genealogy without success. Any help greatly appreciated.

Canada / Which name for Rachel wife of Robert Rennie - Quebec Canada
« on: Friday 22 August 14 14:03 BST (UK)  »
Some background info - Robert came to Quebec from Kilsyth in Scotland sometime in the 1820s with his brother Henry - have not found any passenger lists for them.
Robert married (unknown date - unable to find on Drouin Collection or in the Southwestern Quebec Genealogical resources Parish records) a Rachel. The family were around the Hemmingford area.
In the various records for the childrens' births or burials her name has been given as follows:
James 1828, John Graham 1831 & Robert 1832 - Rachel and for James' burial Rachel Simoe;
there is another child in this group that I cannot find a Henry Joseph born c 1835 - on certificates in Australia he indicated his birthplace as Hemmingford British North America or Canada.
For Alexander 1837, Simon 1839, William 1843, Margaret and Mary 1849 her name is given as Archance.
In her burial record 1856 her name is given as Rachel Dinaud/Dinand (I think it is Dinaud) and on her headstone she is named Rachel Jeremie a native of Laprairie PQ. She is buried with her husband Robert died 1857 (native of Kilsyth Co Stirling Scotland on headstone) and her children James, Alexander and John Graham and his wife Lavinia Fosburgh. They are buried in the Cemetery of the Russeltown Church in Russeltown  Flats.
Does anyone know why she has so many different names and would she be using the French system of "Dit" and if so which one would be her "Dit" name? If I can find what exactly her name is I may be able to find out more about her & her family and perhaps marriage record for her.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

Offaly (Kings) / completed with thanks - James Butler - County Inspector
« on: Monday 18 August 14 14:05 BST (UK)  »
A marriage notice in an Australian newspaper in July 1894, for Mary Bulter in Goulburn, NSW, stated she was the grand daughter of the late County Inspector Butler, R.I.C., King's Co. and niece of Captain Butler. Her father was Tobias Butler born c 1840 at Shinrone (this is as appears in death certificate) to James Butler and Bridget Brown. Tobias married Eliza Beggs in Queen's County prior to leaving for Australia.
The Captain Butler mentioned in the notice - could he also be in the R.I.C. or would this title be more military?
I looked online at Rootsireland for a marriage for Tobias's parents or his birth/baptism.
I have looked at Ancestry site for the Royal Irish Constabulary but not sure if James Butler is listed as there is not much detail in the record - more of an index.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated :)

Australia Lookups completed / Australian naturalisation papers for Alfred W Bailey
« on: Monday 18 August 14 11:51 BST (UK)  »
I hope someone can help with this brick wall - Alfred William Bailey's WW1 Attestation papers indicate that he was naturalised however these documents are not online with his war service record. His record indicated that he was born in Texas America & he enlisted Feb. 1916 at Ararat in Victoria. If these naturalisation papers had to be shown when enlisting does anyone know where these documents may be located?
